Badaling International
--
Preview
The Badaling International has had an interesting few years. In 2020, it served as the ProTour season opener, only to find itself down to C2 level last year. Now, the hilly classic has settled into C1. The starting field is accordingly fairly diverse, with a couple of elite puncheurs and lots of depth behind them.
The profile is the same as in the previous two years. It starts out flat, gets a bit bumpy and then the decision will be made either on the two long climbs towards the finish or the short ramp up to the line - the latter has been the case in both 2020 and 2021. It’s still not super steep though, with gradients of around 4% rising up to 5.8% at the finish line.
| Mo | Hi | St | Rs | Sp | Ac | Kinoshita | 72 | 83 | 80 | 77 | 68 | 77 | McCarthy | 67 | 82 | 80 | 75 | 65 | 74 | Borges | 70 | 80 | 75 | 73 | 71 | 81 | Eiking | 69 | 80 | 78 | 74 | 68 | 76 | Van Garderen | 70 | 80 | 75 | 72 | 68 | 76 | Jensen | 70 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 66 | 76 | Aranburu | 77 | 79 | 70 | 79 | 68 | 71 | Paulinho | 75 | 80 | 70 | 72 | 68 | 75 | Benoot | 75 | 80 | 75 | 74 | 69 | 71 | Bilbao | 67 | 79 | 77 | 71 | 71 | 75 | Bystrom | 68 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 68 | 76 | De Plus | 76 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 61 | 72 | Betancourt | 72 | 79 | 70 | 69 | 66 | 72 |
Voyagin - Bird’s Kinoshita is the big favorite on most courses in hilly continental races and this is no exception. He’s the best pure puncheur with a great combination of stamina and resistance and high-end acceleration. McCarthy is the man who comes closest on paper, and he will no doubt be aiming for a podium spot at least. Borges completes the trio of major favorites, he’s not quite as strong a puncheur, but his speed lifts him above other competitors.
We then have a fairly deep field of similarly capable riders. Eiking might be the most well-rounded, but only nuances better - if even that - than the likes of Van Garderen or Jensen. Carlsberg has a second iron in the fire, namely Aranburu. A strong climber, the Spaniard will hope for a steady high pace to weed out the poor climbers. The same holds true for Paulinho and Benoot, as well as De Plus.
Bilbao meanwhile will try to make use of his good sprint finish; Bystrom and Betancourt don’t have a particular strength but no glaring weakness either, just very good puncheurs.
| Mo | Hi | St | Rs | Sp | Ac | Meyer | 68 | 78 | 72 | 69 | 71 | 75 | Hugentobler | 68 | 78 | 70 | 69 | 56 | 76 | Van Niekerk | 75 | 78 | 72 | 75 | 63 | 74 | Gesbert | 74 | 78 | 80 | 78 | 68 | 73 | Meurisse | 74 | 77 | 74 | 74 | 71 | 78 | Masnada | 77 | 76 | 76 | 75 | 63 | 73 | Azman | 76 | 77 | 69 | 72 | 65 | 75 | Poljanski | 77 | 77 | 70 | 70 | 61 | 71 | Mudarra | 68 | 77 | 74 | 70 | 64 | 68 | Kump | 64 | 75 | 73 | 70 | 79 | 77 | Luchshenko | 65 | 75 | 77 | 72 | 75 | 75 | Doubey | 74 | 75 | 72 | 72 | 67 | 70 |
There are lots of other riders who also come with ambitions for a top result. Meyer and Meurisse stand out for their (relatively) high speed. This is of course doubly true for Kump and Luchshenko, although those two will have to fight harder to be there in the finale.
Van Niekerk, Gesbert, Masnada and Strava duo Azman and Poljanski on the other hand will hope for a race that is too hard for these sprinter types. They’re all decent climbers, but it remains to be seen if and how they can get a leg up on the better puncheurs from tier one. That path might be even harder to see for Mudarra and Doubey, but there’s always a chance.

There are some domestiques here who would be leaders on other squads for sure, and could be able to take a good result even after doing some work for their captains. Kraftwerk and Sauber stand out with great depth, but there are lots of capable riders on here, including a very fast man in Oliveira and the best pure climber in the field, Novak. We’ll see if that’s worth anything in the race.

Absolutely no idea what to expect from this race, will be happy with even the slightest grasp of points. Should be a piece of cake for Kinoshita but you never know, thanks for the preview!

McCarthy needs to bounce back from his bad performance in Poland. Not sure, if it's a profile that suites him though. We used to deliver in most of our races so far, however, so I guess I should fancy our chances for a solid result at least

Youhou, back to racing!
Sadly one of these races I ask myself what the fuck I did with planning (but I guess I'm learning, right ?)
Good luck to everyone! That's the type of race we're meant to be in the offence, so let's try things and not be afraid to lose! |

I don’t expect a lot here. Hopefully they will give it their all, but the field is very strong so I doubt it. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the preview

Feels weird not being here for once.
Atleast somewhat soothing to see the likes of Aidan van Niekerk, David Boily, Remy Rochas and Loic Vliegen here in some sort of outsider roles, while having Karatsivis and Matsangos in the race as loan-outs too.

Benoot is back and we're surely hoping that the profile suits him better than where the favourites' list puts. Realistically though, a top 5 is the goal. We hope he can keep his good start to the season going.
Thanks for the preview cunego

I had lost sight of those a bit, good that you remind me I'll try to do some myself (not for this one as I'll post the report soon), or ideally, you (or anyone else, for that matter) could contribute by coming up with odds, too. That's the most time consuming part. I can share the participation file for upcoming races and then implement them as soon as previews are posted.

Race 2/3 where we have both Jensen and Aranburu this year. I had the race days, and it seemed to make sense. With the short kick to the line and the longer climbs right before that, I figured the race could go either way - a punchy small group dash to the line, or a more grueling race. No Beltran or Areruya means that Aranburu would be a real contender in that latter scenario, but it also makes such a scenario much less likely. Neither of my guys is a great sprinter, but since it's an uphill finish, I'm hopign that wouldn't matter too much. Jensen has good enough acceleration.
Biggest goal is to not be stupid and have both guys make the first major selections and score some point. Top 15-20 from both would be nice, with the top guy hopefully in the top 5, at least top 10. When you invest in puncheurs, you can't let races like this slip.
Thanks for the preview!

"We don't like McCarthy's training" they said..
Team is on a mission and it's going almost ridicilously well in most of our races. McCarthy spent his energy in Poland just to deliver a perfectly timed attack here. Pretty close eventually, but opposing to our lost photo finish with Hamilton most recently, we made it.
Thanks for the report, cunego!

Thanks for a great report was a fun read! Must admit I really loved the way the AI treated my team. Nice to see Jay McCarthy get back on his horse after a somewhat dead Pologne and to see Kinoshita and Borges behind him for a relatively expected top 3.
Was interesting to see 3 of our riders in the break to set up Elissonde and then the massive work from Gaspar and Hermans to set up Meurisse who ended up not being our best scorer! But with two riders in top 8 this was way more than I could expect, also Hermans on a blinder might end up being the steal of the Free Agency if he keeps going at this rate.

Motherfucker, why on earth did Borges sit up twice and let Kinoshita and McCarthy go? He finished so strongly he surely would have out sprinted both easily. Still elated with 3rd, nice to finally have our first ok result since early February.
Thanks for the report

Horrendous race for us. I guess I just really overstimated the climbing from looking at the profiles in planning. 3-5% was never gonna do anything to thin the race out. I guess the length of the race makes everything look steeper than it is, but damn. Really disappointing for that race to come from that profile.
Aranburu burns himself at a stupid time (as I feared he might, looking back at Lopez/Skujins), but much worse from Jensen. He's in the perfect position and reacts to every move, until McCarthy's. Then he randomly decided to fall to the back of the group just in time for the sprint, and gets blocked in, so we'll never even know what his legs were like.
10th is not good enough from Jensen, and 34th from Aranburu is downright pathetic. That one is gonna hurt us all season.
Thanks for a great report though and congrats to tsmoha who just keeps rolling.
Edit: I guess looking again at the result, there were teams who did much worse than us with similar strength leaders. So maybe poor more than terrible in the grand scheme. But still sucks for Jensen to be that stupid.

He give his best to finish 7th among those highly ranked riders. Amazing result! |
