Tour of Guadeloupe

2022 marks the first running of the new C1 Caribbean event, the Tour of Guadeloupe. It replaces the Mangame’s visit to somewhere that probably wasn’t Barbados. No prior winners, so the rest is still unwritten (guess in the Caribbean I should be referencing Rihanna not Natasha Bedingfield, sorry.)

The Mangame UCI appears to have a soft spot for PTC sprinters because not only have they scheduled their two big GC races back to back but one is just a short hop across the Caribbean from the other. Although lets hope they chartered because the commercial flight options require an 11 hours layover in Mexico City. Making the charter are 6 of the top 10 from Juarez, including the top 2 Halvorsen and Ahlstrand

On paper this race is another simple one for the sprinters, the first stage is 161k and they gradually get shorter with the last stage just 112km. But there are two big wrinkles, both stage 3 and 4 feature small climbs to the finishing line. Stage 3 finishes with a 600-meter climb at 7.2% to Vernou while Stage 4 concludes on a 1k climb at 4.6% to the Pointe de Vieux Forte. Sprinters will a little ability on the hills might have an advantage.

137 riders have made the trek to Guadeloupe representing 18 teams. As is typical with these kinds of races there are plenty of strong sprinters releasing their inhibitions:

The outstanding favorite is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Ahlstrand. He brings along pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Kump and team stalwart pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Marin for support. Both of them make the favorites list in their own right and Ahlstrand and Kump are two of the stronger riders in the hills.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Vesely, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Bonifazio, amd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen are all similarly strong and any of them could be considered 2nd favorite behind Ahlstrand. Bonifazio might be the best all round but has never been that committed to his sprinting. Silvestre and Jakobsen were both outstanding last seasons. Kennaugh has the pedigree from the Pro Tour while Vesely is the best in the hills among these. But Halvorsen was by far the best of them in Juarez.

Kennaugh brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hla.png Vingerling as his lead out while Vesely has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Hodeg. The others will rely on less accomplished riders to set them up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Howard lack slightly in acceleration but will hope to be among those fighting for the podium. The latter brings a full lead out in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Suryadi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ino.png Page.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Kanter is a good all round sprinter but also the only favorite who qualifies as U25, so he will be looking to pick up enough bonuses to take that competition.

The top rider receiving the warmest welcome from the crowds might be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/esc.png Bogdanovics, who leads Eddie Stobart in their return to the peloton. But the big cheers will no doubt be reserved for local heroes Podium Ambition. Jamaican pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Sinclair carries their hopes in the sprints but the crowds will be looking for the pink jerseys to be represented in all the breakaways.

Shoutout to the wrong stasrtlist picture giving me a minor heart-attack Pfft

Zero expectations or hopes. Lets just get in the breakaways and continue to feel aggrieved our "home" race is now a French Occupied race.

Fixed the startlist. Can't fix the occupation.

Probably not much to hope for, but we bring a decent squad and perhaps Boivin shows himself in the sprints or one of our puncheurs tries something in stage 3 or 4.

Could have used a break from the sprinting after the Juarez failure, but I guess we'll get back to it and hope we get some luck. Similar startlist for both us an the competition. I do wonder what effect the finishing gradients will have on stage 3 and 4. Since everyone kind of sucks at hills, I'm hoping AKA's resistance helps him stay viable.

Forgot about the hill finishes on S3 & S4, that makes everything very different. Barbados was a disaster for us last season, so hopefully after a good performance in Juarez Howard can keep it going here. A top-5 would put us in a good spot going into the next set of rankings.

Thanks for the preview UU!

Not too much hope for us here, like follow Le Creuset.
We're mainly here because it's one of the few French race on the calendar, despite what TMM might say.

And, well, there are bonds and history to atone for, between Bordeaux and Guadeloupe.

But, if Guerao and/or Rodriguez could manage to steal some good points here, we'll be happy with that.

Thanks for the preview (had the heart attack with the startlist too Grin) and good luck everyone!

Oh i agree, this is definitely a French race - and when we could have visited the worlds newest republic (Barbados) in great celebration, you can start to see why i'm not over the moon with this change Pfft

Unfortunately the world's newest republic has not invested in any stage designers, limiting our ability to visit them as our stage designers were busy returning the Celtic Chrono to its original location among other things.

To be clear most of this is based on the RP of having a Caribbean team, rather than a genuine complaint against organization of the game Smile

Definitely understood. Can't miss a chance to mention something in case there is someone desperate to undertake stage making out there.

Why are we here already?

Thanks for the report Ulirch; congrats to Volcania already showing teeth.

Another one to forget for AKA. At least he's sprinting, but we need more than 9th.

Oof, as I feared we did not even get tagged for a breakaway. This could be a very long race with very little to do but continue to campaign for Guadeloupean independence.

Vesely continuing the form from the last stage from Juarez. Let's hope it won't be that race in reverse though. Hodeg also looking for those minor points!

Always a good way to start a race by not even bothering.

Thanks for the report Ulrich.

Our second goal race of the season and we-re aiming for the win. Ahlstrand seems to be in very good form, after winning 2 stages in Mexico he's off to a flying start here as well. I am delighted with the stage win and I am really hoping our Viking Speedster will be able to improve his 2nd GC place in Juarez. So far so good.

Thank you very much for the report, Ulrich!
