Tour of Ukraine discussions

What a strange race that is the tour of Ukraine ! Ranked PTHC, it consists on a 7,8 km hilly prologue, on a relatively short road race with a steep finish, and on a longuer flat ITT. Depending on the outcome of 2nd stage, it could favor a puncheur or a time trialist. But before that, a bit of history :

Tour of Ukraine has been run since 2014, and alternated between PTHC (2014-2017 ; 2022-) and HC (2018-2021). There were 5 stages until 2017, and the current format has been unchanged since then.

This last years, the race was generally won by stage-racers, who were good on the time-trials, and decent in the hills. The only exception was Ion Izagirre, who won the race in 2018 for Iberia - Team Degenkolb, and is more a puncheur with good TT abilities. The other recent winners were Ryan Eastman (2020, for Azteca – NBCSN), a good stage-racer now riding for Duolingo, and Aleksandr Pluchkin, who won in 2019 and 2021 for Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff. The Moldavian even won all three stages of the race in 2019, and performance we’re not sure we’ll see again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Ukraine/S3/23.jpg

But let’s come back to today. Pluchkin is here again, but with a the new classification as PTHC, he will have a hard time to repeat his last year victory. Let’s have a look to who the favorites are :

The stage-racers

The field is stacked here in Ukraine : world star pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Taylor Phinney is the best time trialist to have enlisted, and he’s also the best in the hills among the TT specialists. If someone can repeat Pluchkin performance, that’s him.
His first opponent should be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Tom Wirtgen who, in a good day, could turn the table and take a prestigious victory. His team looks slightly better overall, but they’ll have to make the race hard for Phinney and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Tao Geoghegan Hart to cause problem for the Isostar armada. Behind these two clear favorites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Yuttana Mano has the qualities to bring a good result for King Power and should find a place on the podium if the second stage is hard enough.

Other good stage racers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Egan Bernal (who won the third stage and the youth jersey last year), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Omar Fraile, who has a good support with Ivo Oliveira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Jack Haig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Nicola Conci, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Jack Bobridge and veteran pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Ion Izagirre.

The time-trialists

The pure TT guys will probably not be the overall winners – barring a especially easy second stage and big gaps on last stages. But with one prologue and a mi-length TT, they could bring up to two stages win home. Among those, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Marlen Zmorka has to be the favorite. He’s the second best TT-ist in the field – behind only Phinney – and has good physical stats. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Luke Durbridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Emilien Viennet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Damien Howson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Jasha Sütterlin are also good contenders here in Ukraine.

The Puncheurs

The time-trials should prevent the top pure puncheurs who attend here to win the overall GC, but they still have a decent shot at victory if they don’t lose too much time.
And they are plenty ! Best of them has to be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Peter Sagan, who had a good victory in Luxembourg earlier this month, just in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Jay McCarthy, who will want to have his revenge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Emanuel Buchmann will want to continue his good performance from Tirreno-Adriatico – he’s accompagnied by Patrick Müller, who will want to amend for his pour Classique du Grand Duché. Moser once again has a strong team in support of Sagan, with Simone Ponzi and Cesare di Maggio.

A very strong field, for the return of the Tour of Ukraine in PTHC should ensure a fierce battle for each stage and for the GC. See you tomorrow for the race!

Conci very much our leader here and I would love a big performance out of him. He’s certainly not as strong as many others here but he’s got the all-round skills to put in a solid performance.

tsmoha
The race doesn't suit any of our leaders, so.. we just brought all of them Smile so basically it's about stage hunting for Durbridge and McCarthy - and there's minor hopes that the AI considers Haig as a GC contender, who doesn't sleep in the hilly stage.

Roman
Congrats in advance, Croatia! Grin

Hopefully my team can score some decent points in that hilly stage. Not expect anything in the GC.

Had hoped to be of relevance here, but again I think we will struggle to reach that.

This has never been a kind race to us, it would be nice to see a change in fortune this time.

Thanks for the preview Imladrik and good luck everybody!

I honestly didn't expect such a packed field here. So, there's no wonder we don't make the favorites list on anything. Not that I was expecting marvelous results in terms of GC here, the TT still makes my team suffer, but I was hoping for some scoring. Maybe we'll get lucky and manage that though.

Good luck to all and thank you for the preview!

Choi not on the favourites' list but that isn't the biggest surprise. Hoping that MO gets the nod ahead of hill as usual for the stage 1 TT, which allows Choi to put himself into a good position for the later stages. Will be important I think if we are to get anything. Rest of the team is supposed to support Choi with only Raileanu likely to get opportunities for himself.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Thanks for the nice preview!

The good news for us is both Zmorka and Keizer can't do worse than they already did this season Pfft Looking forward to the reports, and good luck to everyone Smile

Interesting preview, and definitely a stacked field - which had to be expected with only 3RDs to spend. And clearly no way to look past Phinney.

No way the pure prologue specialists will take the opening stage, Mo will have a major impact on the second half (or maybe Hi, given the TT's shortness). Stage 2 will probably also favor the hybrids over the pure puncheurs, although the hill might be short enough for the latter.

Hoping for LPH that Keizer finally wakes up, but I find it pretty much impossible to say who'll take 2nd behind T.P. Wirtgen obviously should have some decent chances, but he can't take it for granted. Looking forward to some nice racing here Smile

The next race where I send Gidich and Mano as shared captains. This time my team will probably rather ride for Mano. I hope he can show a similar performance as in Tasmania.
Thanks for the preview and of course congrats, Croatia, on the race victory!

One day this will be a good race for Leknessund. For now he's here to train though.

Ride of his career for Rachid. Too bad he'll likely lose 10min tomorrow. Bobridge, again, unimpressing. Phinney, on the other hand, doesn't flinch. Congrats on the win, Croatia!

Good ride from Haig! Obviously our only GC hope, so it's good to see him deliver an early stage podium. Not sure what he can do in the hills, but here's hope that he won't lose too big.

ryant
Fraile is competitive which is all I can ask for really, now obviously hope he can stay with the favourites tomorrow and then we can build on that for the final day. Oliveira being underwhelming hurts a little but he can still be up for a decent depth result if he can stay up there as well.

As expected no one should stop Phinney and he may still win every stage Shock
