Euskal Bizikleta
--
Preview
Welcome to the Euskal Bizikleta, a storied MGUCI race going into its 10th anniversary edition. It’s the final C2 race of the season with just 4 C2HC races remaining on the dedicated CT circuit.
Puncheurs vie for the GC title at the Euskal Bizikleta and have historically claimed it - returning champion Odd Christian Eiking did so last year. But the presence of Mektel Eyob and Valens Ndayisenga ( ) on the podium emphasized that punchy climbers have a shot here as well.
Before any of that comes into consideration, we have two flat stages where sprinters fight for glory, including of course a day or two in yellow. Let's look at the contenders for all terrains:
| MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | DH | Boswell | 71 | 80 | 73 | 65 | 76 | 68 | Eiking | 69 | 80 | 74 | 68 | 76 | 69 | Chaves | 76 | 79 | 73 | 60 | 72 | 64 | Bystrom | 68 | 79 | 72 | 68 | 76 | 73 |
On paper, Boswell, last year’s winner Eiking, 2019 winner Chaves and Bystrom are clearly the riders most suited for this race and should be the men to beat.
Chaves stands out for his climbing skills and should those be a big factor, it's hard to look past him. But Boswell, Eiking and Bystrom are competent climbers as well, and faster riders, too. All of them are very close to each other in terms of their abilities, so it's tough to make out a clear favorite.
| MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | DH | Juul-Jensen | 70 | 78 | 74 | 66 | 79 | 69 | Paez | 72 | 77 | 70 | 73 | 76 | 65 | Calmejane | 71 | 77 | 76 | 72 | 76 | 70 | Hugentobler | 68 | 78 | 69 | 56 | 76 | 68 | Budyak | 74 | 78 | 67 | 57 | 68 | 74 | Vogt | 62 | 80 | 71 | 62 | 63 | 62 | Bratashcuk | 71 | 77 | 70 | 62 | 67 | 79 | Kanepejs | 67 | 77 | 71 | 62 | 71 | 65 | Le Gac | 69 | 77 | 74 | 64 | 69 | 73 | Mudarra | 68 | 77 | 70 | 64 | 68 | 64 | Skjerping | 70 | 77 | 67 | 58 | 65 | 73 | Serry | 74 | 77 | 61 | 67 | 68 | 65 | Tsatevich | 62 | 77 | 73 | 75 | 75 | 69 | Kump | 65 | 76 | 72 | 80 | 79 | 72 | McEvoy | 64 | 76 | 70 | 75 | 79 | 66 | Vysna | 76 | 75 | 73 | 52 | 69 | 58 | De Vos | 75 | 75 | 73 | 62 | 69 | 73 | Gaspar | 75 | 75 | 72 | 61 | 67 | 70 | Fernandez | 75 | 75 | 69 | 60 | 66 | 72 |
Those four guys are obviously not the only ones who are capable of competing for a podium or even the win here. Topping this list is a trio of Juul-Jensen, Paez and Calmejane, the latter giving Trans Looney Tunes another high-caliber contender. What unites them is solid-to-good climbing and resistance, good puncheur skills obviously, and some high-end speed and acceleration.
The entire tier is too big to go into detail on every single rider. The field is varied though. For one, there are strong puncheurs who lack pure climbing like Hugentobler and especially Vogt. That lack of climbing skills might also be the downfall of the punchy sprinters represented here, including Tsatevich, Kump and McEvoy, Trans’ third option.
But there are more climbing-oriented puncheurs here as well, such as Budyak, Serry, Vysna, Fernandez, and HelloFresh riders two and three, De Vos and Gaspar.
Popo4Ever is another team with three riders on the list, probably led by Budyak. We will see if a clear leader emerges for those teams at some point, or if they will instead suffer by spreading their resources thin.
| FL | SP | AC | RS | Kump | 73 | 80 | 79 | 72 | Boivin | 74 | 79 | 80 | 70 | Vanderbiest | 73 | 81 | 75 | 67 | Liepins | 73 | 78 | 79 | 68 | Marin | 74 | 78 | 78 | 73 | Losch | 73 | 78 | 79 | 68 | Abdul Halil | 68 | 79 | 77 | 66 | Ranneries | 69 | 77 | 80 | 63 | Bauhaus | 74 | 78 | 75 | 65 | Favilli | 71 | 76 | 74 | 67 | McEvoy | 70 | 75 | 79 | 70 | Redecker | 73 | 77 | 78 | 67 |
We’ve seen deeper sprint fields before. Kump, Boivin and Vanderbiest are fairly comfortably in a tier of their own, though that won’t necessarily translate to success. Crabbé have Liepins as a secondary option/top leadout, with Marin for Volcanica - Fox and Redecker for HelloFresh being the other major leadouts.
Losch leads the second tier, which also includes Abdul Halil, Ranneries and Bauhaus. Favilli and McEvoy are more quick puncheurs than actual sprinters but might have a shot at a decent result if they choose to compete on the first two stages.
Lots of riders with something to gain. Hopefully, we're in for some interesting racing over the next few days.

Our last C2 race. Vysna could do great or he could be awful. If I go by his previous results then he's more likely to be awful
I have a lot young riders here, so I'm hoping to 'occupy' the top 8 places in U25 classification
Thanks for the preview

Will be fun to see how we do here. Brought a team where stage results through aggressive racing is our main hope. Fingers crossed we can do just that, be aggressive, and any result we might get, we will happily take! |

Paez looks a Top 5 contender here so hopefully that's what he can provide, if not better of course!
Abdul Halil in with a decent shot of a result in the sprints too.
Thanks for the preview and good luck to all!!

Was hoping one of my guys could be a threat for a top10,but missing out on a preview is never a good indicator. Should be a fun race to take part in for sure anyway. Good luck everyone!

Expect a strong race for Boswell here. Stage 3 should go to the punchier sprinters but stage 4 will hopefully be selective without be too good for the MT guys. Chaves is due a good race so he is definitely a worry.
Puzzled why I didn't manage to send one of my sprinters here. Kind of an oversight, Walscheid could definitely have picked up some trash points. So I guess all hands on deck for Boswell, they will need to be at their best since most of the team is the stagiaires.

Quite a good stage for us that one! Noia with a breakaway appearance giving him provisional 3rd in the KOM and the intermediate sprint bonus seconds sees him leading the U25s
Abdul Halil managing 4th in the sprint is a very respectable result too so that we can also be happy with.
Quite an eventful stage for a "flat" opening day. Thank you for the report!! Congrats to Trans Looney and our former rider McEvoy for taking the first leaders jersey

What a shame that our sprint team couldn't deliver a result.
Congrats Trans Looney with the win and thanks cunego59 for the report!

Had forgotten about this with ToA being on. Important race for Kump and starting off with a second place on the first stage is magnificent work from him, hopefully he keeps it up as it seems like our ToA gamble won't really be paying off too heavily.

Quiet first stage for us, but I guess the real race starts today anyway. Congrats on the win to Trans!

I have quite enjoyed how these sprints have played out so far. Nice to see Kump with another solid display here putting him into two jerseys and Walls with some stellar work also secures himself the white jersey for a day. Hopefully Kumpi can stay in the mix on the next few stages and secure us a mega Euskal!

Any points is good with a startlist like ours. Jans has done well so far. Hoping someone stronger than Sagadin can join breaks in the remaining stages.
Congrats to the winners so far and thanks for the reports cunego

A disappointing stage that from Abdul Halil but was to be expected with the not to flat nature of the stage.
Now time for Paez to show what he's got!

Bauhaus with the suprise win, nice nice.
We expected Eiking to bring home all the bacon, but Bauhaus wanted to give us some extra. Lovely.
Amazing report and photos, like mention above, a great read.
Now, the real race begin. Come on Eiking!!
