Benelux Challenge - Preview
Welcome to the Benelux Region, made up of The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. We are here for the 6 stage Benelux Challenge. A race which offers a bit for riders of varying strengths.
The opening stage is a flat 6.2km against the clock in which gaps should be pretty minimal as TT specialists will likely battle it out against the prologue specialists for the first Leaders Jersey.
Stage 2 is then an opportunity for the sprinters which will be their only chance to be in the race lead.
The decisive stages come on Stage 3 and Stage 4. A 192.3km stage followed by a 175.4km stage. Both stages are absolutely littered with cobblestone sections which will no doubt open up extensive gaps between the riders and allow someone to take hold of the General Classification.
Our penultimate stage is 191.9km but, unlike the 2 prior to it, does not have any cobblestone sections. Instead, it will offer an opportunity to those who thrive off the punchy climbs. They will need to look to make this tough so to gain time back on the Cobblestone specialists.
We then finish with another chance for the sprinters to claim a stage with a flat 184.6km finishing in Leiden, The Netherlands.
Recent history doesn't provide a very good indication of what to expect here with success being found by Cobblestone Specialists, Puncheur Sprinters and Puncheurs. So we will consider all options.
There isn't a stand-out rider here but rather quite a good variation of what additional strengths they have.
Adam Blythe, Ruben Zepuntke and Marcos Altur are all equally as strong cobblestone riders and should be able to cling on in the hills. They don't have quite the kick as some others so they'll want to avoid sprints at the end of Stages 3 and 4.
It's hard to look past Joeri Stallaert as a favourite for a cobbled race and it's no different here. He's by far the best sprinter of the cobble riders but he will lose time on Stage 1. However, he's right at home here in the Benelux so he'll have the local support too.
The other man who deserves a lot of attention here is Matteo Trentin. The Italian is equally as good as Stallaert over the cobbles, not quite as good a sprinter but he's a far superior puncheur so he could gain time over the other cobble specialists on Stage 5.
Other riders we'll highlight are Kenneth Vanbilsen. Another local man who is very strong over the cobbles. Hampus Anderberg provides a different strength in that he's quite an accomplished rider against the clock so he could well go into Stage 3 with a handy advantage over the others.

A number of sprinters have been sent here in hopes of a stage win on Stage 2 or 6 and potentially a leaders jersey going into Stage 3.
Marko Kump is the main man to watch as he's not only one of the best sprinters here but he's got the strength to compete on Stage 5 in the Hills and he may limit his losses in the Cobbles as well. A good GC result wouldn't be too big of a surprise. He also has the help of Thwaites who himself is a very good rider over the Cobbles.
Tom Van Asbroeck is similar to Kump but not quite as strong in the Hills. However, he is better over the Cobbles and he shouldn't lose much time on the opening stage so he could be a good shout for the leaders jersey after Stage 2.
Sebastian Lander and Kris Boeckmans are also two riders to watch as they're half-decent cobblers.
Finally, two riders who could very well be in the race lead after the first 2 stages due to their superior ability on their own over a short distance are Dusan Kalaba and Jingbiao Zhao.

A few teams have sent Puncheurs in hopes of a stage win on Stage 5 but, realistically, none of them are capable of more than that given their ability over the Cobbles. Jay McCarthy probably the only one with any hope of being close to the Top 20.
| | | HIL | TT | COB | PRO | | Jay | McCarthy | 81 | 58 | 69 | 58 | | Cesare | Di Maggio | 81 | 61 | 50 | 61 | | Jan | Bakelants | 80 | 63 | 59 | 62 | | Oleksandr | Prevar | 80 | 62 | 53 | 62 | | Carlos | Betancourt | 80 | 60 | 52 | 59 | | Amanuel | Gebrezgabihier | 79 | 66 | 53 | 64 | | Pello | Bilbao | 79 | 65 | 51 | 61 | | David | Gaudu | 78 | 66 | 57 | 66 |
A number of riders who should contest Stage 1 in hopes of wearing the Leaders Jersey for at least 1 stage, if not 2. Unfortunately for their teams, none of them will be able to stay with the Cobblestone specialists so don't expect any miraculous GC performances from these riders.

We'll see how this goes, but its Altur so f*ck if i'm gonna bother predictin or expecting anything. At least AC should do well to open the race, and we have various options through the team to at least do something.

We'll see how this goes. Should have good chances with Zepuntke and Kalaba, but doubtful of a good GC

Big race for us. Goal race. We need a top 5, and we haven't succeeded in any goals yet this year, so we're really counting on one here.
On paper, I like our chances. There is no other race on the calendar that gives us a better chance to capitalize on the versatility of Trentin and Sinkeldam. Trentin is better on the hills than anyone close to him on the cobbles (except David), and Sinkeldam is the perfect complement. Very promising too that none of the pure puncheurs look to enough cobbles legs to challenge too hard for GC. We can hope for big selections on all terrains this way.
However, it will ultimately come down to execution. Trentin should be favored here, but he's had both great performances and some head scratchers this year. This is one of his last opportunities to really pull his weight and assert himself in his area of specialty. I hope he capitalizes on it instead of disappearing.
We also have Lander for the sprints. Hopefully he doesn't screw anything up as far as our GC priorities. Prologue should at least limit his chances of being in yellow on stage 3. At the very least, he's in a better position than most sprinters to still be in the race and have some legs on stage 6.
Thanks for the amazing preview! Great read!

Thanks for a great preview One of the biggest bets of the season here with Kump using a lot of race days in hopes of chasing green and a GC result. Hoping that GVK can also put up some pretty good placements too.

Really need our cobbles and sprint squads to come good here after a poor July which pushes us back into relegation danger. TVA and David should be a good combination for a race like this on paper and we are hoping the extra cobbles stage this season makes it tip the scales towards that specialization. Stopped hoping for results from Dumoulin but hoping Van Asbroeck can play it smart and target the GC before the cobbles come around. Hoping for some home race magic because we really need it!
Thanks for the preview LLS

A big race, with a great startlist as a HC race. Thank you for a great in-depth preview, LLS!
Excited to see how this one plays out. It should be a good thing for Anderberg that both cobble stages are rated flat. Hopefully he makes use of them and doesn't ride passive together with a bigger group. Seeing his abilities on the hill stat, he kind of has to, if we're going to get something from here.
I think Stallaert is my favourite here, though, Trentin really should have a great chance, as this must, as bbl says, be the perfect race for him. |

We can't hope for much here. Manarelli participating in the sprint is our main hope, and Ulloa in the break on the cobbles would be great from a role-play POV. Maybe in the last stage the breakaway is allowed to survive, then Mutsumine might be someone to finish inside the top-8 on that stage as well.
Thanks for the great preview, LLS. Looking forward to the race itself. Good luck to everyone!

I haven't brought Saber here, so I don't have a sprinter or a cobbler. So everyone on the team should have the freedom to attack, attack and attack some more
It's a HC race so I hope we can bring back a few points, but I won't be surprised or disappointed if this is a zero pointer.
Thanks for the nice preview

Last cobbles race of the season for Stallaert. As he's the worst time trialist and one of the poorer uphill riders among the cobblers, I don't have my hopes up too high for the GC, but the points classification should be within reach and I'm hoping for one stage win. And he's proven to be somewhat resilient on hills before this year, so who knows. Should be an interesting race for sure.
Trentin is the favorite overall I think, and maybe I'll look like a fool but I wouldn't discount Cataford as a dark horse. If he gets into yellow on stage 1, with maybe half a minute to the best cobblers, I wouldn't put it past him to somehow hang on through the rest of the race. The cobbles don't look too tough.

One of the races that my team will only gain experiances from and I hope they can at least go into breakaway.

Not a bad start. We expected nothing from the prologue results wise obviously. Trentin did okay. Lost time to a few guys with slightly worse prologue, but also came out ahead of some of his biggest competitors, like Stallaert. We'll take it.
Anderberg is gonna be the one the favorites have to focus on dropping now since he has a nice time buffer. Should be possible, but not guaranteed. But first, we'll hope that Lander can get a nice result tomorrow.
Thanks for sticking with this despite the stage hiccups LLS!

A wild Janvier Hadi appears! Cool fourth place there, we'll take every small point we can get. Stallaert fourth-to-last is rough, but not entirely unexpected. 55 seconds to Blythe might be manageable though, everyone else among the cobblers is closer other than Anderberg. We'll see. Hopefully Stallaert can show himself a bit in the sprint tomorrow already on his way to challenging for the points classification. Thanks for the report LLS, looking forward to the rest of the week

Great to have the race going, thank you for the report, LLS!
Not the greatest start from Anderberg, as we hoped to gain more time on the cobblers/GC riders. Though, this race was always going to come down to the cobbles and hilly stages, and fingers crossed he'll turn it around there and have great days when it matters the most |
