Tour of South Africa - Preview
Welcome to the Rainbow Nation
The Professional Peloton doesn't spend too much time in The Motherland but the annual 6 day race here in it's most Southern Nation is always hotly contested. The race itself actually sees the riders spend the first days in and around the landlocked nation of Lesotho before moving south towards the Eastern Cape with the final showdown in PE.
The profile itself couldn't really favour puncheurs any better. The only of the 6 stages which doesn't suit them is the 34km TTT on Stage 4 which could be one of the most decisive stages of this edition but we will have to see!
Last year's winner, Borges is here to defend his crown and you would have to fancy his chances given the quality and strength of the TTT set-up he will have for Stage 4.
Others with very strong TTT set-ups include Izagirre who himself is an integral part of that set-up.
Reichenbach may not be the best pure puncheur here but his UBS team also have a very good TTT squad.
Hard also to look past McCarthy who has the quality in the hills and his team is well known for their abundance of world class TT riders.
In terms of pure Puncheur riders, Boasson Hagen and Bobridge are the duo to watch. Both of them have been afforded some decent TTT support but nothing like the teams mentioned above.
Finally, there is another duo of Skujins and Kelderman who are in the Top 5 of pure ability to go over a hill but their teams haven't provided the TTT support so they will lose big time on Stage 4. We should then expect some aggressive riding from the pair during the road stages.

Always a race where TTT is very important. Could be some teams scoring very big.

I'm hopeful that the differences in TTT can be canceled out in the remaining stages. If that happens we may have a chance of achieving a decent result, but if that doesn't happen this race will be another failure.

Easy win for Brandle. Easy win in TTT. Not sure why people even signed up for this one.

Thanks for preview.
Glanbia probably just stage hunting here. Maybe Craddock cam get a top 20.
Our TTT is split between here and Trentino so no big expectations in the TTT.

Only here for stages as no hope of competing in the TTT. And maybe get some freedom for Boswell to attack, but a bit of reach really.

Time for Kelderman to step up and keep our progress. Hoping the hills will have much more impact than the TTT, where we have only an average team. Can be an important race for us is we do turn up.
Thanks for the preview

Our strategy worked well last year so I'm hoping we can reproduce that for another time. There is a good number of candidates, with our usual rivals at Polar topping the charts I'd reckon, but Minions, Project Africa, cycleyorkshire and UBS should all be good bets. Hopefully not as good as ourselves.
Thanks for the great preview LLS!

Impeccable first day for us, with Borges and Oliveira in the top5, couldn't have asked for more.
Congrats to Tryg!

Must admit I forgot we were here
One of our big gambles in the planning this season, tempting fate having Stake here as a potential GC rider, and also investing TT riders in the race. Very lucky start in that regard, as we had to expect bad positioning, and to come away from the first two hilly stages without any time loss except bonus seconds, is a good start. Now we could set Stake up very well after the TTT, as we've brought a team here similar to the one that took the win in Olympia.
Looking forward to the continuation! |
