Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt - Discussion
Luis Leon Sanchez
Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt - Preview

Top PT Climbers are in Spain but now is the time for the top PCT Climbers to shine as we head to Austria for the next week for our coverage of the Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt.

We have 7 days in Austria and they are not for the faint of heart.
The race kicks off hard and fast with back-to-back long, steep Mountain top finishes although the opening stage looks the more brutal of the 2.
We then have 1 of 2 opportunities for the sprinters on Day 3 which allows the GC teams and favourites to grab some rest.
Rest they will need because Day 4 sees an absolute monster of a Mountain halfway through the stage before a relatively calm 2nd half of the day prior to an uphill finish.
Day 5 is possibly the easier looking of the non-flat stages but it may prove to be decisive as it may favour those better on the shorter, sharper climbs.
The penultimate stage is the easiest of the lot at only 132km and pancake flat. This will be the 2nd, and final, opportunity for Sprinters to make their mark and let's the GC guys gain some energy back before their final effort.
Finally, we round out our week in Austria with a flat 24.3km TT which could definitely shake-up the GC as some of the favourites don't excel too well against the clock.

GC Favourites

The race is full of history but there's one name on previous podiums that stands out and that is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin who has won this race for the last 3 years running and he is prime favourite to win it again and make it 4 in a row.
A number of riders will be looking to stop him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Quintana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens, 2nd here last year, are the best placed riders to do just that although the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Oomen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Guldhammer can't be ruled out either.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Alarcon may be one of the least talented TT riders you'll see here but he is more than capable of making serious time in the Mountains so he will be another to keep a close eye on.
Finally, we have a very strong trio of all-rounded riders who could prove to be strong contenders for this one. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Uran has the most history with this race, clearly the Minions stuff him with their strongest bananas on the flight over, as he finished 2nd here in 2019 and 2018. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer may not be quite as strong a climber as those around him but he's the best TT rider so, if he can limit the gaps, he could power himself to glory on our final stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Shikai is also very capable against the clock and a similar rider to Uran so he may be able to surprise the top guys too.

Sprinters

With 7 stages total and only 2 flat stages, combined with no opportunity to wear the leaders jersey or have a realistic chance of winning the Points classification, the best sprinters in the PCT have decided to sit this one out.
However, we should still have a competitive 2 stages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao has seen some success this season and is the best at weaving through others in the finale although he doesn't have the kick that others have.
All of our other top sprinters here are very similar although there is a trio with a better kick made up of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Coutinho, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Perera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn which may give them an advantage.

TT Specialists

We have already mentioned the rider who is actually the best TT rider here in general and that is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/rbz.png Keizer. It'll be pretty tough for the other riders here to beat him, especially after a fairly tough 6 days.

Likely that I will post the first stage on Friday rather than tomorrow due to work commitments. Will then catch-up by posting 2 on Sunday.

Another top 5 should be the goal here, maybe even a podium.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Thanks for the nice preview. Really stacked mtn startlist, so will be interesting to follow as an outsider. Maybe Munoz attacks and score some KoM-points. Manarelli should have a decent chance to score some points in the two sprints, whereas it was stupid of me to not bring any 78 tt'ist here, but that's life.

Good luck to anyone, and looking forward to more LLS reports Smile

I'm hoping that either Eyob or Ndayisenga is in a range to be able to go into the breakaway on either stage 4 or 5 and maybe do something that way. Perera should do well in this sprinting field, but who knows. Most importantly, great to be racing again after quite some time off Smile Thanks for the nice preview!

Not sure I should be hoping for anything better than a Top 15 given how the past Penasa races have gone. Hoping for some improvement there. Also hoping Dumoulin can do well in the TT.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Home race bebe. Keizer hasn't been bad on pure mountain stages, this could be decent. Easy GC win

Should be a very interesting race!

We're here with no big expectations, this definitely being one of the stage races where we can't hope for an overperformance from Laengen neither. Please surprise me, team!

Fingers crossed the GC is sort of settled already after the first stage, maybe making room for breakaway success. We must target to participate in breakaways, seeing the team we've got here.

Pluchkin must be the big name to overcome for anyone, really difficult to see anyone else win the GC.

Jesus Christ that startlist is ridiculous, it’s going to come down to daily form for Bart now. Hopefully he has a good day to start and can finish well so he is treated well by the ai on stage 2. If not, it’s going to be a rough week. Bambang should do well in the flat stages I think.

Thanks for the preview!

Yeah, so. I picked this as a win goal. Frown

Tremendous field, but there aren't that many climber's HC races out there, so I guess stacking the field like this was inevitable. This is what PCT looks like, and it's very tough.

Not much of a chance of hitting our goal then, but how well we end up doing in this is really gonna be a matter of whether we get Giro/Romandie Guldhammer or Eritrea/Chile Guldhammer. If it's the first, we can challenge for a top 5 or even a podium. If it's the latter, we'll be doing whatever we can to scrounge up leftover points.

We are all in here at least. Only Aranburu missing of our best climbers. Warbasse is here, and I had hoped he could score a bit before seeing the startlist. We've also got Eg, Olesen, and Roe. It's all hands on deck, but anybody could have a couple of great days or poor days here. We have to not only hope we can outclimb people, but hope that we have enough time to not lose big in the final TT.

Bouglas is here as an afterthought. If he can score anything at all, I'd be happy. Particularly stage 4 could be interesting as he's a better climber than most sprinters.

Thanks for the preview!

Yeah, tough startlist. Not confident Alarcon can make top 10 with his shitty energy and TT stats, but I'm always open to being surprised Pfft

I'm always looking forward to seeing Pogacar race, but he probably won't make the impact he did in his previous races.

Near perfect performance by Guldhammer to open the race! That's huge for our chances. Obviously it could be totally undone on stage two, but you don't dismiss good results based on the chance of a bad one in the future. Not surprising for Pluchkin to be the strongest, so having Rasmus in 2nd puts us in our best case scenario going into stage 2. We've gained real time on a lot of guys, and the time bonus gives us a small buffer over the others in our group as well. Guldhammer's acceleration (and sprint) have come in handy a few times now recently.

All in for tomorrow to hope we can repeat or at least get close. We've shed a few of the better time trialists, which is good, but we still need to factor in potential time losses from that. Still, I think if we can stay in the first main group tomorrow, we will be in a decent spot to go for the top 5 goal. But I don't want to get ahead of myself, since we could finish outside the top 20 in stage 2 and lose huge time.

Nice to see Penasa and Quintana in the first group for once, but commiserations of course to those who lost leaders prematurely (i.e. Keizer, Ranaweera, etc.).

Thanks for the report LLS, and especially for following the minor placings and time gaps after the sprint.

Yikes

At least at + 17 minutes, he (and all his teammates) really should be all in for breakaways now, which was our most likely path to points anyway. Congrats to Pluchbear!

He was chilling with Munoz. They might have not scored any points, but they did decide on going on a safari in Tanzania together. Apparently they also decided on attacking together soon. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for another nice report, LLS, and congratulations to all that did well!

Warchol’s career as a GC rider not starting well at all, what the hell was that? Weird that the group behind Moldova man was mostly riders that have underperformed so far this season, and the big boys like Oomen, Monsalve and Welens were all behind them seemingly doing sweet f a. Tomorrow can’t be any worse surely.

Congrats fj and thanks for the report lls!

Let's GOOOOO!!!

Absolutely phenomenal ride by Guldhammer. These two stages were hugely important for our season, and Guldhammer executed absolutely perfectly. I was a bit worried to see that he was quite a ways back at the beginning of the climb, not in an area to respond to any attacks. But I guess he knew better than me and was just biding his time for the proper moment to surge forward. His legs were always there.

This obviously puts us in an amazing spot. Another minor stage placing, another day in 2nd overall (and 2nd in points and KOM), and a great position time wise. Pluchkin is the strongest. We knew that would be the case, and that's fine. Not even gonna consider the 37 seconds to him because we'll lose a lot to him in the TT anyway. We had a win goal (one I keep optimistically misremembering as top 5 in my head), but a mountain win goal in a division with Pluchkin is always stupid, and there's no fixing that in hindsight. 2nd is a real possibility, and we're very well set up for a good GC haul even if we can't hold that.

So, sprint stage tomorrow. Hopefully Bouglas sprints, but if not, no big deal. Then Guldhammer has the medium mountain/hilly finishes. I doubt we see big gaps there, but on paper, that type of terrain should favor him anyway. We've seen his hill and sprint help him a lot on those stages even in races where he doesn't do well GC wise. And the flat day in between should help his recovery. But of course, anything can happen.

Congrats to cunego! I guess Ndayisenga heard your advice about the most likely path to points.

Popo4Ever clearly chose not to look for another stage win, eyes only on the GC, and rightly so extending the overall lead.
Another brilliant day for Carlsberg (Skål).
Abloy's boys did well today.
Quite sure Philips also happy with 3rd in GC.

Congrats to Bralirwa with a tactically perfect surprise win.
