Welcome to the 15th edition of the Tour de Romandie. The race is a staple on the MG calendar. There have been many different formats to the race. But in the last few years a team time-trial has always been a significant part of the race. Add in a hilly stage. a couple mountains, maybe another TT and some sprint stages and you have a very balanced race. All those elements are present again in this year's race. The winning rider will need good all round skills as well as solid support by his team.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| MO | HI | TT | RS | RC | AC | PR | Latour | 80 | 75 | 70 | 78 | 80 | 74 | 74 | Pluchkin | 83 | 73 | 77 | 75 | 74 | 71 | 77 | Guldhammer | 81 | 77 | 71 | 75 | 74 | 76 | 71 | Monsalve | 81 | 76 | 72 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 72 | Keizer | 80 | 70 | 80 | 78 | 77 | 72 | 80 | Schelling | 80 | 75 | 72 | 76 | 73 | 70 | 71 | Uran | 80 | 72 | 76 | 78 | 72 | 68 | 76 | Bernal | 79 | 72 | 76 | 78 | 80 | 68 | 74 | Quintana | 82 | 74 | 71 | 76 | 76 | 66 | 71 | Gesink | 79 | 77 | 76 | 74 | 74 | 62 | 76 | Oomen | 81 | 75 | 74 | 77 | 78 | 69 | 77 | Galta | 81 | 73 | 73 | 79 | 77 | 66 | 71 | Penasa | 80 | 74 | 70 | 72 | 77 | 76 | 70 | Bongiorno | 79 | 75 | 68 | 77 | 77 | 69 | 68 |
Taking all things into consideration Latour may be the top rider here. He's strong on the short and long climbs, the mountain TT should be to his liking and he has perhaps the best TTT support. The strongest individual though is still MG legend Pluchkin. We'll see if his slightly diminished punch and worse support prevents him from winning. Guldhammer on the other hand is the punchiest climber here and is coming off an impressive Giro performance. We also can't forget about defending champion Monsalve who's no worse off than last year.
Keizer has had a good season so far and he'll be banking on his TT skills to rise above the others. Schelling has strong TTT support and is a good all round climber. Uran and his Minions are also known for their TTT, but the veteran Colombian was never the punchiest of climbers. Bernal is Polar's backup plan, but also the strongest teammate Latour could hope for. Quintana needs a big performance for his team.
Gesink is old, but experienced. His lack of acceleration is his major weakness. Oomen gets stronger every season and he's one of the best riders here, but he'll likely need to make up time after the TTT. Galta is strong, but also a bit of a diesel which could hurt him on stages 3 and 4. Last in this preview are Penasa and Bongiorno. The two Italians are both slight outsiders, but the former has good acceleration which may help him upset some others.
| Avg. MO | Avg. TT | Avg. PR | TTT Score | Polar | 67.00 | 76.25 | 76.50 | 75.99 | Duolingo | 65.38 | 76.88 | 75.25 | 75.68 | Minions | 64.13 | 74.63 | 75.75 | 74.71 | Team UBS | 67.13 | 76.00 | 73.63 | 74.58 | Project: Africa | 71.63 | 73.75 | 74.25 | 73.89 | Red Bull Zalgiris | 74.13 | 74.00 | 73.63 | 73.84 | Aker - MOT | 70.63 | 73.13 | 72.63 | 72.80 | Jura - Fiat | 65.25 | 73.25 | 72.63 | 72.65 | Indosat Ooredoo | 66.25 | 72.38 | 72.50 | 72.19 | Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff | 67.75 | 69.63 | 71.00 | 70.17 | Philips - Force India | 73.75 | 69.88 | 69.88 | 70.03 | Voyagin - Bird | 69.50 | 69.00 | 71.13 | 69.97 | Assa Abloy | 71.50 | 69.75 | 69.88 | 69.88 | BWT Hyundai N Cycling | 63.13 | 69.38 | 69.75 | 69.29 | Carlsberg - Danske Bank | 70.75 | 69.13 | 69.00 | 69.13 | Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam | 68.38 | 67.38 | 70.13 | 68.65 | BNZ-Superhero Racing | 69.13 | 67.25 | 68.00 | 67.66 | Sauber Petronas Racing | 76.38 | 66.88 | 67.00 | 67.31 | Tafjord Kraft | 69.13 | 63.88 | 64.88 | 64.53 |
It's a big clash between Polar and Duolingo for time trialing supremacy. It will be hard to see the other teams challenge them, but Minions and UBS are two very good units that might have a chance. It's all about limiting the losses for all the other teams.
Sprinter | FL | RS | SP | AC | Leadout | FL | RS | SP | AC | Reinhardt | 71 | 66 | 79 | 84 | Bissegger | 71 | 73 | 70 | 71 | Zhao | 74 | 74 | 77 | 81 | Arashiro | 81 | 67 | 70 | 75 | Kalaba | 74 | 72 | 79 | 79 | Rosas | 72 | 70 | 70 | 74 | Mareczko | 74 | 73 | 78 | 77 | Sajnok | 72 | 74 | 72 | 71 | Lutsyshyn | 70 | 73 | 79 | 80 | Dzervus | 73 | 72 | 77 | 77 | Bouglas | 72 | 67 | 78 | 78 | Forssell | 64 | 69 | 72 | 72 | Altanzul | 72 | 73 | 78 | 75 | Scott | 68 | 69 | 73 | 74 |
Reinhardt is here for the home team of Jura. He's the best sprinter here and seems to have good support. Zhao might be his main competitor with his also strong acceleration and support from Arashiro. Kalaba might be better off surfing the wheels. Mareczko is nothing special stat wise, but in this type of field he can compete. Lutsyshyn has to hope his combo with Dzervus works. Bouglas and Altanzul are both outsiders, but could spring a surprise.

My all time favorite race from back when Festina was still a French-Swiss collaboration
Can we have this in the PTHC soon please?

Big race for us! Must admit I hoped for a better TTT rating, as that was key to picking this race for Galta. Will nevertheless be excited to see what he can achieve here. We should also have a could of very good depth scoring options in Laengen and maybe even Foss.
Looking forward to the racing! |

Penasa much lower in the startlist than I would've hoped but let's see if he can upset a few of those above him. All in for him in this race really as we don't have anyone for the sprints.
Thanks for the preview red

I don't think I missed that there was a TTT, seeing as I brought Sterobo here, but I clealrly underestimated just how bad my team would be at said TTT.
Big opportunity for Guldhammer here. Coming off 5th in the Giro, we expect big things from him. On the other hand, AKA won two stages in the Giro and promptly finished 15th in an HC classic. That's just how it goes sometimes. Besides the TTT, I'd say the race here definitely suits him. No flat ITT to lose time in, just climbing. He's one of the best climbers here, and stage 3 also offers a chance for his hill to hopefully come into play. It's an extremely deep startlist though, so we could be looking at anything from a victory (unlikely), to effectively no points, this being a C1 race.
A chance for Bouglas to lead the sprints here too. He'll have a few chances this season, some bigger, but this is his first. Stage 2 has some bumps in the end that might favor him over some of the others due to his mtn/hill. Or at least, that's the hope.
Thanks for the preview!

Ready for the next disappointments.
As the season has been going so far, I guess Quintana will finish way outside the Top10, and Reinhardt probably miss the time limit on stage 4.
Thanks for preview & reports anyway.

It's become a regular goal of ours to triumph here in Switzerland so it's great to see we can still produce an important victory as this.
I have too say it's kind of intriguing how we always tend to get the better hand out of these duels with Polar and Minions.
I won't complain though
Thanks for the report red!

That's a strong start from us and Galta. A bit unfortunate to see Stake loose some extra seconds for not being among our first five riders, but that's how it is. This sets Galta well up for a solid GC, but he really needs great days on the critical stages. Hopes are high!
Congratulations on the stage win, Gustav! The perfect start for Gesink's overall ambitions. |

Guess 7th is a new record for us in TTTs, we can definitely be happy about that one!
Thanks for the report and congrats to Duolingo, you really rock those TTTs lately!

What is the deal with PCM 18+ letting leaders drop from TTT's without any thought? Somehow with an uphill finish it's Guldhammer who loses 8 extra seconds cause he fell of the train? Just plain stupid. I didn't see this happen a single time in all the hours I put into old PCM's, unless the leader was actually the team's liability TT wise. Guldhammer (and Eg) are definitely not.
Starting from the back of the pack as far as leaders. That was expected I guess, though I hoped we, and specifically Rasmus, would be a little closer. Don't think it's possible for us to gain a full minute on the majority of contenders here, so it's about doing what we can. At C1 minor placings are not worth much, so maybe we'll just go for broke.
Thanks for the report!

Agree, that's really unfortunate. There are definitely two issues: one is that there are time gaps at all, even if the entire team finishes together. And the other one is indeed PCM AI not caring about putting the team leaders in the first 5 positions given that there are time gaps... Well, TTs are at least partly broken anyway, so it's no real surprise TTTs are, too.
Guldhammer probably had a rider right ahead of him dropping at the very end... When you control a team, you can make sure that there are 3 riders who don't participate, which will put them to the back, but PCM obviously won't do that ^^ (in no single version, I guess)
I've suffered from this many times as well; fortunately, here it was Nairo leading the team home.

Yeah, that makes sense. No idea why they made it so that after 5 riders it starts counting time even if they're in one group still. That was definitively not how it worked in older PCM's, so I have no idea why they would actively change it to work that way.
Obviously I've had more than my fair share of good luck this year anyway. I'm due for some bad luck.
