RTG '21 | Teams, Riders and Races
AbhishekLFC
This thread will be used to discuss everything going on in and around the peloton in the 2021 season of Road To Glory. I will start off by posting team details. Feel free to start discussing about the make-up of the teams, their focus and which ones catch your fancy.

Once the rider creation process is complete for the season, I will put up rider details in this thread too. You can also use this thread to post about and from the perspective of your riders. Let everyone know how his recent race went, what he's thinking and what his dreams are. Also feel free to spark some rivalries in the peloton. But always remember, keep it clean!

When the racing starts, use this thread to discuss about the races that are taking place in the cycling world.

Alunderis signs with Lotto Soudal

Virginijus Alunderis had two great seasons with Quickstep, helping Alaphilippe to major victories, winning the WT teams ranking in 2019 and especially spending four days in pink in the Giro 2020. But the Lithuanian climber felt it was time to move on and rejected an extension offer. He posted: "I'm truely grateful for the amazing experience of riding for such a prestigious team. But with Almeida and Evenepoel, both younger than me, and several more good climbers I felt I wasn't really needed anymore - and the contract offer reflected that, too."

He opted to stay in Belgium and join Lotto Soudal on a 2-year contract. Alunderis: "A team without GC ambitions in stage races is perfect for me. It should allow me to join breakaways to compete for the KOM ranking or, who knows, even a stage win. I'm really looking forward to next season!"

MIHAI STOIAN SIGNS WITH VINI ZABU

cdn2.bigcommerce.com/n-arxsrf/p2uhy/product_images/uploaded_images/vini-zabu2.png

Mihai Stoian hoped for his professional career to start in Spain, the year spent in the junior ranks of Quadis Trek – CC Sant Boi made him fall in love with the country. But the closest offer to his wish came from Bahrain Victorious, a team that counts several Spanish riders within its ranks. However, on further consideration, the team already has an almost complete and strong squad which means that Mihai’s development will be closely related to the demand for results here. The same goes for the second offer he received to join a professional cycling team.

Instead, although weaker in strength than the other two, Vini Zabù offered Mihai Stoian a 2 year contract and the possibility of developing his skills without burning quickly through stages in search of results. The Italian team offers him patience, a medium in which he could develop and grow step by step, without the additional pressure of great demands. Another factor that weighted heavily in his choosing of Vini Zabù was the presence of Mathieu Van der Poel in the team. Mihai Stoian shares the experience of competing in MTB races with the Dutch rider. Well, not exactly the same experience considering the differences in competition format, level and performance, but it is as close as it gets. Therefore, Mihai couldn’t refuse the chance of picking the brain of such a spectacular cyclist for how to translate his mountain-biking skills to the road racing, to acquire useful knowledge for the chasing of his dreams. Without much hesitation Mihai Stoian put pen on paper and is waiting with excitement to make his debut and race professionally with Vini Zabù.

Ruedi's Diary

My first pro contract

So, here we are. I have three contract offers on my desk. Not one, three! Sounds great, but... let's be honest: those are not the teams I was hoping for. AG2R and FDJ both have a great record of successful Swiss riders, but I've heard that their rosters are already full. Yeah, I know I should be happy that my pro dream comes true, but it would have been nice...
Well, let's do with what I have. I mean, my dad had hoped I wouldn't get any offer, so I'm definitely a happy man. I think I'll take the offer from Cofidis. They didn't have a lot of Swiss riders recently, I guess Steve Zampieri was the last one. Roli Meier and Tony Rominger are bigger names - so it's time for a Swiss rider to step up at Cofidis again. And if it doesn't work out, at least I'm already in France - maybe AG2R or FDJ will contact me then? But now, two years of full gas for Cofidis, let's go!

Campeón signs for Caja Rural
After his first pro season was everything but extraordinary, Campeón decided to blame Trek - Segafredo's team management: 'I am totally fine with being a domestique. I know my strengths, and more importantly, my weaknesses. In my career, I'll never really stop being a domestique. Nevertheless, it is tiring to be forced into a domestique role when your team simply doesn't have the riders to win a race. I've been working hard all season, and the team barely accomplished anything. When asked if I could have a free role in a race every now and then, they told me it was impossible.'

In addition to this, Uruguayan newspaper El Telégrafo mentioned Campeón had trouble integrating in the team because of language problems, but unofficial sources state the young rider's ongoing internal discussions with Bauke Mollema led to his departure of the team after only one year.

Jesús decided to try something different and signed a two-year contract at Caja Rural - Seguros RGA. The focus in the second year of his career will still be U25 races and monuments, as he hopes to score more than three points this year.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Intermache Wanty Grobert complete their roster with the neo-pro signing of Bob Bobson.

First Contract - Bobson Chronicles

I can't believe it. I'm going to Europe. I'm going to be a bike racer. I knew my performance in juniors was good enough, but it hasn't really sunk in until now. The last year has been such a whirlwind since I graduated high school. Constantly trying to prove myself in any race I could find. I guess I made it.

Tomorrow, I fly to Belgium to officially become a member of Intermarché Wanty Gobert. It was a very difficult decision for me. Hagens Berman Axeon offered me a contract, and my first inclination was to accept, smile, and celebrate without thinking. An American team would be the easiest way to ease myself into the professional peloton. No language barrier like at Wanty, and only a 1 year deal for maximum flexibility - Wanty wanted me to commit to 2.

But in the end, I had to pull the trigger on Wanty. I want the cobbles - not just on race days, but in training, in life. I want to be in Belgium, in the thick of it, racing with guys who know the area and the terrain. Wanty have a great lineup with lots of awesome riders, but they also leave me room to grow and emerge if my legs are up for it. I know my decision was a risk for me. But it was one I need to take. See you on the other side of the ocean.

RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

First Look of Stanley's New Jersey!

i.imgur.com/fnX3L4k.png

Camera crews caught a first glimpse of U22 World Champion Harry Stanley as he joined up with his EF Education teammates for a warm weather training in California today. In what was a stunning result at the end of last season, Stanley outsprinted much fancied rivals to claim the U22 crown. His team seem to have rewarded him handsomely with a specially designed jersey, which he will sport through the 2021 season. It remains to be seen how often we get to see the jersey in action during the season. That's a question for a different day though. Stanley looked to be pleased and comfortable to be back on the bike again and completed a hard day's work with a smile on his face. His preparations seem to be on track for the new season.

Progression and Planning
Virginijus improved his climbing, but we thought it was probably more important to increase his FLA, HIL and DHI to conserve more energy reserves before the climbing begins. A higher ACC should be useful, too..

After much debate we decided to send Alunderis to two Grand Tours this year. He won't return to the Giro which was so successful last season, instead he opted for the Tour/Vuelta double.

His primary focus will once again come early with the U25 Oro y Paz. It's the one race all year where he should do well in the GC. After that he'll be on a long break until his season starts in earnest in June.

After three appearances at the Dauphine he signed up for the Tour de Suisse this year. It'll be followed by the U25 Clasica Aldeias, then it's off to the Tour de France. Next up is the U25 Clasica San Sebastian. He'll stay in Spain to prepare for the Vuelta and ends the season with Il Lombardia, which might well be the only race where he'll seriously support a captain, probably Tim Wellens.

2021 Season Beckons

The 2021 season of the Road To Glory (RTG) gets underway this Sunday in Australia with the Tour Down Under. The race was changed to a U25 only race from last season and continues in the same format this time around. 22 World Tour teams line up for this race, as will be the case for all races, with some new kits and faces to be spotted in the peloton this time around. The RTGUCI hotshots seemed to be in high spirits as they announced the season start in a press conference earlier today. Stay tuned to this channel for live coverage and all the reactions throughout the year.
