Welcome to the 8th edition of the Euskal Bizikleta stage race. It's not as famous as it's sister event Pais Vasco, but this race has been gathering steam on it's own accord. As a true Basque race it's filled with difficult hills, which makes it a race for the puncheurs, but they have to climb well also. None of this stuff _____/ in this race. There are two sprint stages to start things off, but even these are not without elevation and already feature 9 KOM sprints. Stage 3 will wet the appetite of the puncheurs, but the queen stage is last. The climb up the Arrate always determines the true winner.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:

Kelderman is a class of his own when it comes to pure punching ability, but with a decent amount of climbing in this race, Moscon should prove a worthy rival. His better rounded skills could come into play, so we expect a fierce battle between these two.

Tier II is nothing to sneeze at. The much maligned Juul-Jensen has been good for Carlsberg this year and he may look to steal some seconds on the flat finishes with his sprinting ability. Edmondson doesn't lack much with elite punch; he's a worthy candidate in any uphill race. Similar with Eiking who has also shown he doesn't mind attacking from further out and force the pace. Hoelgaard's punch is a bit worse, but his climbing ability is very good, he's a real dark horse in this race. Quevedo and Barbin have both had up and down season's and will try to mix it up with the big favourites.

More good riders are still here. Hugentobler has a great punch and acceleration, so he's worthy of headlining tier III. Seibeb is a great climber, he'll be hoping he's on his best form for the Arrate climb. Palini is another with a strong punch, while Paulus is another not averse to climbing. Strava bring the duo of Felline and Roux. Neither great climbers, so they might want to make their move on stage 3.
Same with Zaini who hasn't been able to transform his high hill stat into results. Eyob is another talented punchy climber. We round off the list with Ben Nasser and Pellaud who will need to be on top form to compete for a good result.

The sprint field is not the strongest we've seen, but there are some riders here who will relish the bumpier terrain. Krieger isn't exactly that, but he's rock solid everywhere else and has very good speed. Lobato del Valle has outperformed his stats on occasion and has some climbing ability. Speaking of climbing Modolo and Kreder are true hilly sprinters, with Kreder also being a very strong helper for his puncheur leaders. Merino Criado is a leadout who gets his chance in this race. As does Redecker who is another great sprinting climber.
Lavoine will find it much tougher, but if the race is easy then he is very fast. Philips's Kreder can also climb, we will see if his team leader will give him the freedom in the first two stages. Guillen will also be hoping for an easy stage to deploy his powerful sprint. Altanzul gets a chance to ride for himself and we see a Project: Africa rider in Haddi among the sprinters for this race.

Moscon's big, big chance to get a top GC result this season. Especially the brutal final climb on day 4 should suit him best of all puncheurs, especially with his great resistance.
Furthermore, main domestique Pernsteiner would definitely make it to Tier III or even Tier II list on his own, so expectations are definitely huge. Manfredi for the really long climbs is nothing to scoff at, either.
Merino Criado doesn't have any support, however, but Walscheid did really well in a similar situation last year. So let's see - good luck everyone, and thanks for the preview!

Thank you for the preview! We don't have a puncheur on the list, but I sent Ndayisenga here hoping that he can do something on the final stage (and maybe even before). If the AI is kind to us with positioning and such, it could be a worthwhile gamble. The race is also well suited for Redecker, especially without Selig or Habtom here. If we leave with a couple of stage Top 5s or a Top 10 in the GC, I'm happy, but both might be too ambitious, I'm afraid.

Hopefully Lobato can show he's still got some good legs on those trickier sprint stages, although Kreder is clearly the man to beat on them here.
Maybe we'll get lucky and secure a top 10 from Pellaud.

JJ back here with some more race days to score in. Besides a few slipups, he's been pretty consistently the 3rd-5th best puncheur in CT this year, and I'll be hoping for that to continue. Hopefully his acceleration will help him here, and the final 3 days are all selective enough to diminish randomness.
He wasn't mentioned, but Fabbro is here too at 78/75 mtn/hill. There are some longer climbs, particularly on day 4. Having him as a complement to Fabbro worked in Rio Vista Chinesa. Hopefully it's a similar story here.

Our final goal race and we hope Kelderman can get the Top 5 at least. I wouldn't put it past PCM to screw us over here as well! The hills squad is all here so no excuses really. Last chance for Kreder to participate in a couple of sprints as a team leader perhaps. Not sure he has a chance at a win, would love to see him involved.

Really trash team here for Los Pollos Hermanos. If Guillén doesn't survive stage 1 to sprint for the win, I don't know where to score points. Maybe Bru on a very good day going for some KoM succes? He's too bad I fear. Seboka might do something if he is in the break on the last stage and they get allowed to battle for the win. Thanks for the preview!

Well there you go  Congrats! Decently happy with Redecker in 5th, too. Was hoping for a bit more when I saw the first pic of how he was set up, but it's fine. Munyaneza in the breakaway was good, too, although it would have been really nice had he picked up at least 2 or so bonus seconds for some U25 points.

No clue what was on Los Pollos' menu for breakfast, but it had an amazing effect! Congrats, Nemo, would never have thought that Guillén could win that one!
On our side, good to see Merino Criado actually sprinting - and the rest of the team very well positioned. The result could have been better, but well...

Like I said this morning, we brought one of our best rosters of the season here, because we had good faith in a strong result on the first stage! Happy to see the castaways of our team working so hard, and then seeing Quispe doing great work by bringing Guillén back to the head of the race. Great sprint from the Costa Rican, with a beautiful win in a C2HC race. Race can't go wrong for us anymore, as we've already scored more than I could imagine

No breakaway for us, despite not having a top sprinter... Don't know what's wrong with our guys this year, but well.
Merino Criado gets another point, but it's disappointing to see him do much worse than Walscheid last year - with +3 Spr...
Anyway, the important stuff starts tomorrow, and it's good to see that the boys were really attentive on the first two stages. Good job by stagiaire Szarka, by the way.
Congrats to Cannibal-Carrefour, winning all they can possibly get despite this... strange move.

Just a tiny bit worrying that JJ is finishing outside the top 100 on these stages while Sinkeldam is the one staying at the front. But I can't concern myself with that until tomorrow.

Well, I wanted a couple of stage Top 5s and I got them already, good stuff. Redecker is up to third in the points classification which is neat. I think this is the first time we got both of our NC shirts in the same shot, which is also very nice. Decent race all around so far. Depending on how it goes, Redecker might even be able to do something tomorrow, otherwise it's time for Ndayisenga and Ben Nasser. Congrats to Carrefour! |
