Giro del Trentino
Hi and welcome to Italy!
It’s time for the Giro del Trentino, a defining region of the world of cycling, with its picturesque climbs and dedicated tiffosi. Trentino has been around for some time and has been dominated essentially by Italian riders in the first editions.
2010 Rinaldo Nocentini
2011 Riccardo Riccò
2012 Domenico Pozzovivo
2013 Domenico Pozzovivo
From 2014 onwards only Penasa has since claimed the first step of the podium, though, with riders from different origins taking that distinction.
2014 Janez Brajkovic
2015 Winner Anacona
2016 Florentino Marquez
2017 Pierre Paolo Penasa
2018 Petar Panayotov
2019 Ryan Eastman
If you haven’t guessed this far, it’s still likely unsurprising for you to receive the news this is a climbing stage race. A short one with only 3 days.
Three very interesting days though: a short TTT to start things off, a behemoth queen stage and a final mountainous day to the riders to wave goodbye to their beloved legs.
As expected, the cream of the CT division climbers is here to contest the event. Let’s look at the list of favourites:
| MO | HIL | TT | STA | RES | REC | ACC | Seboka | 80 | 62 | 53 | 63 | 70 | 73 | 67 | Ratiy | 80 | 70 | 74 | 70 | 73 | 76 | 58 | Pinot | 80 | 74 | 65 | 76 | 79 | 75 | 69 | Marquez | 79 | 70 | 69 | 69 | 77 | 75 | 79 | Kiserlovski | 78 | 73 | 70 | 69 | 72 | 69 | 63 | Lunke | 78 | 72 | 73 | 76 | 74 | 78 | 64 | Ndayisenga | 78 | 75 | 65 | 69 | 68 | 73 | 73 | Signorini | 78 | 69 | 65 | 66 | 72 | 73 | 74 | Fabbro | 78 | 75 | 67 | 71 | 72 | 74 | 73 | Manfredi | 78 | 65 | 65 | 68 | 73 | 72 | 73 | Warbasse | 78 | 75 | 74 | 75 | 73 | 72 | 65 | Chamorro | 78 | 75 | 65 | 72 | 76 | 70 | 74 | Cort Nielsen | 78 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 75 | 74 | 71 |
There’s obviously Mr. Pinot who’s going to have a target on his back, but then you have Los Pollos Hermanos with Seboka and, more importantly, former winner Marquez. Nordica also brings their climbing leaders with Ratyi and local Signorini to the party. Carlsberg is arguably a stronger threat with also a pair of leaders which includes an Italian (Fabbro) and Warbasse, while Tryg bring the robust Cort Nielsen and Lunke. Obviously not to be discarded are Ndaysenga, Manfredi, Chamorro or Kiserlovski. All solid threats in their own right.
| | Average TT | Total TT | | Project: Africa | 73,3 | 586 | | Carrefour - ESPN | 72,1 | 505 | | Carlsberg - Danske Bank | 70,5 | 564 | | Kraftwerk Man Machine | 70,5 | 564 | | Mapei | 68,7 | 412 | | Glanbia Foods Cycling Project | 68,5 | 548 | | Tryg - Ritter Sport | 68,3 | 546 | | Centovalli - Fiat | 67,9 | 543 | | Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team | 67,3 | 538 | | Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam | 67,3 | 538 | | McCormick Pro Cycling | 67,3 | 538 | | Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff | 66,5 | 532 | | DK - SVA Zalgiris | 66,1 | 529 | | Adastra N Hell Energy Cycling | 65,9 | 527 | | Sauber Petronas Racing | 65,9 | 527 | | Bralirwa - Stevens Bikes | 65,6 | 525 | | Berg Cycles | 65,0 | 520 | | Nordica - Enel | 64,8 | 389 | | Los Pollos Hermanos | 64,8 | 518 | | Sotto il sole di riccione | 63,6 | 509 | | Eddie Stobart | 63,0 | 504 |
Difference in team size and stat distribution are not accounted for (Mapei as an example only has 6 riders, hence their average is higher than what the absolute sum would suggest)
As to the TTT stage Project: Africa hold the theoretical favouritism as well. It remains to be proven if Pinot has enough in himself to make use of his team’s superiority. The same can be said of Chamorro who might struggle with the pace of his mates.
Carlsberg and Kraftwerk are much more well-rounded squads and could make use of that to upset the other two teams.
Whatever the result it is likely that the mountains will offset the gaps from this first stage. But that’s all futurology. See you tomorrow for some much less equivocal presentology.

Unless Sterbini is god-like and carries seven riders to the finish line with him, we'll obviously lose a lot of time in the TTT and say goodbye to a good GC. Just hoping to see attacks in the two days after, as definitely on the last day I think the attackers could make it to the finish line.
Thank you for the preview!

Ah yes, we had more mandatory C2 races and this one was in our sponsor nation
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Warbasse obviously not the strongest pure climber here, but in a weird turn of events, I'm hoping that the TTT can be of use to us. We packed the full 8 riders here for that reason, and I'm hoping it puts us in a favorable position going into the mountains, where things could go either way.
Interested to see how things go for Project Africa here. They have the strongest TTT squad by far as well as the strongest climber, but they could easily drop Pinot if they go as hard as possible. Interested to see how PCM navigates. Hoping that Warbasse's TT skill will help us in that regard.
Thanks for the preview!
Edit: Forgot to say, I also hope we can take home white with Ranaweera not here.

I guess that's an all-time-high in a TTT preview for us
A bit weird that PCM chooses Moscon as our leader for a mountain race - really hope he'll work for his teammates instead! Top 5 is our sponsor goal, which we missed by a single spot last year - if we really manage to do well in the TTT, that might actually be possible this year. Let's see...
Thanks for the preview, Gustav!

Kraftwerk had a good result here last year so we are back for more. We recruited Kiserlovski as he was C2 eligible and he has a decent TTT squad to get him off to a good start. A top 5 would be great, also looking to Gonzalez Cortes to overperform again for some depth points.
Thanks for the preview Gustav.

We knew we have a weak TTT squad so didn't want to waste Ranaweera's race days here. We decided it best to dodge Pinot and hope he doesn't go to one of the other races we want Ranaweera to win.

For once we had some expectations for a TTT, and of course we don't deliver. There's no way Sauber or Bralirwa should beat us here... Worst, Saggiorato even loses 7 additional seconds. At least, it's still pretty close behind Pinot, who'll have a walk in the park here. Congrats!
Thanks for the report, Gustav. I guess our bad result is your revenge for your Austria disaster

Congrats to P:A, getting all those TTists is really paying off, what a time! But also:
Entirely correct!! How on earth did we get 7th place here? I'll take it, though, gladly. Still no expectations for Valens, who seems to have a podium as well as something around 15th place in his range of outcomes, but this is a very good start. Thanks for the report!

Pretty disappointing performance from these guys, who I though should have challenged for the podium. I thought for sure Pinot wouldn't be able to keep up if P:A went full gas to win the stage. But they instead showed me to be fool. It was dominating win and Pinot should easily win the GC now that he managed to gain so much time in a TT.
I guess we can still hope for a top 5, but it will be unlikely seeing as most of the pure climbers are right near us on time.
Thanks for a great report!

More like a testament to your bad luck and my lack of vision as a manager In all truth it is always upsetting to see a prolific reporter having bad luck. Sorry mate.

Overall, fairly OK-ish TTT for a team that combines experienced veterans with young talent. Nice report Gustavovskiy.

Pinot needs to give his win bonus to Hamza for saving his race!
Job done by the Kraftwerk TT team, Kiserlovski only needs to hang with the leaders for a decent result.
Thanks for a great report Gustav.

Great report, Gustav.
Very very nervous moments for us but it worked out well in the end! A bit worried about the other tours with TTT now, but this one turned out well. Now let’s hope we don’t have a repeat of Tour of Eritrea and Pinot actually does his bit in the mountains.

No worries. I've been pretty lucky this year so far, so a slightly disappointing TTT result definitely isn't the end of the world
I really felt for you when I saw your sprinters not even trying on that stage - I guess it's more about PCM dumbness than manager failure

Lovely stage with great photos. Poor Petrovski tried so hard, made my heart break to see him fail like that, but I'm very happy he did what I hoped for. Also great to see Marquez attacking like that, Pinot is a level apart but if he can keep on to a top-5 spot it would be a good result for us after that TTT

Awesome ride by Warbasse there. Did not expect him to get off the front just by using his engine, that's for sure! Pinot earned a great win, and will take the GC. But Warbasse is now in a quite good position for the podium, which is awesome. He looked spry and in control. Can't ask for more. he's been tremendous this year.
I will say, while it was nice to see Larry surrounded by teammates so late, Fabbro continues to really under perform here, losing massive time for his skill level. Not quite sure what's wrong with him, as he was more successful before he maxed in PCT last year. Nevertheless, we'll see Eg in white tomorrow, which is cool.
Congrats to aidan, and thanks for a great report. Hopefully we can hold 2nd tomorrow.
