It`s the 7th edition of the Tour of Southland since 2012, which means in 2015 and 2017 the race missed on the calendar. Also the route changed quite a bit, sometimes with a TTT, then a time trial heavy event and already since last year back to the roots towards a puncheur event.
3 sprinter stages though also will see great contest of top sprinters going for it while the GC then is decided on the two hill stages. First Bluff Hill, which is a flat stage until the final 3km and then Coronet Peak, which is very similar but a bit longer and steeper towards the end.
As last year has shown, the gaps in between the very best might be small, so both, a good form on both uphill days and time bonuses are important here.
Lots of riders from last years top10 are here again including the 2019 GC winner Claeys as also Schreurs, Borges, Gautier, Betancourt which are all on the favourite list again plus Di Maggio of course who had a good Bluff Hill last year just to totally drop on Coronet Peak, here to make it better this time.
Other favourites are Dowsett, Waeytens, Prevar or Turgis.
| Hi | Sp | Acc | | Hi | Sp | Acc | Di Maggio | 82 | 65 | 75 | Prevar | 80 | 67 | 73 | Claeys | 82 | 66 | 71 | Turgis | 79 | 70 | 77 | Schreurs | 81 | 71 | 74 | Gebrezgabihier | 79 | 67 | 69 | Borges | 80 | 71 | 81 | Gautier | 79 | 67 | 76 | Dowsett | 80 | 66 | 71 | Landa | 78 | 61 | 69 | Waeytens | 80 | 66 | 73 | Flügel | 78 | 65 | 69 | Betancourt | 80 | 67 | 74 | Kanerva | 78 | 64 | 76 |
The Sprinters will have 3 chances as said and with the finishes not leading to the biggest time gaps neither, some might even show up for a top10 or top20 in the GC! Last year Manninen did not win a stage but fought the longest on the climbs to make it onto the 15th in the GC showing what is possible. He is back trying to repeat it clearly and even improved.
Though competition is harder as some of the very best PCT sprinters take part. Swift might be 33 now but still potentially being the very best, though Gaviria is the next generation and surely willed to become the new start in the PCT. Ewan is not here, so we can not see the top3 of the division.
Avelino, Vesely, Nelson, Maksimov to name a few more. Last actually won a stage here in 2018 as also the points ranking and must be watched!
Also worth mentioning Swift`s leadout as Kupfernagel is a proven winner himself as last man.
| Sp | Acc | Fl | | Sp | Acc | Fl | Swift | 83 | 81 | 73 | Kupfernagel | 80 | 80 | 74 | Avelino | 82 | 77 | 70 | Kemboi | 80 | 80 | 78 | Gaviria | 81 | 84 | 76 | Mohs | 80 | 77 | 72 | Vesely | 81 | 80 | 73 | Matthews | 79 | 79 | 76 | Manninen | 81 | 80 | 74 | Te Brake | 79 | 76 | 75 | Ciolek | 81 | 76 | 73 | Lutsyshyn | 79 | 80 | 70 | Maksimov | 81 | 84 | 72 | Wippert | 78 | 82 | 70 | Nelson | 81 | 81 | 72 | Page | 78 | 79 | 75 | Van Asbroeck | 80 | 78 | 75 | Von Hoff | 78 | 75 | 70 | Keukeleire | 80 | 79 | 72 | Ackermann | 77 | 80 | 72 |

Should be an interesting race for us. Schultz is hoping to get a good result and I hope that Wippert can continue his great form that started of his season. Should be a great race!

Claeys won last year but has been mediocre since then, so I hope his will rejuvenate him. As for Vesely, please no repeat of TDU, you are free to take your own chances.

Took another gamble with Gaviria, it almost payed off in TDU but this stage 4 looks a lot harder.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

We are in this race just to fight for the sprint stages. Swift disappointed in the two races he made for the team this season, I hope this is his redemption.
We are far from having the best sprint train, but if the PCM so decides I think that Tzortzakis and especially Kupfernagel will be able to put Swift in a good position to discuss the stage victories.
For GC we don't have any outstanding rider but maybe Afonso is able to reach a respectable place, something in the top 20 would be acceptable.
a stage victory and the victory of the points classification will be the minimum acceptable to be able to consider the race as a success.

On paper this should be a perfect race for Borges. Last year it only got to a low top10 I think, but I'm hoping he could be fighting for victory this time around.
Thanks for the preview roturn!

I dont expect Di Maggio to be a top favourite here, rather a coinflip between huge podium success and total failure - fingers crossed

Very nice to see Oram delivering again in the first stage of a C1 race! Might not be the same as a stage win and yellow jersey in Catalunya, but still good for a CT team indeed.

What to do with this? Horrible sprint obviously, but the 33 second gap could be something!

It was not a bad start this time, it was a shame that Swift was blocked because I think that otherwise he would have easily won the stage. Kupfernagel also ends up doing a good result, 10th after launching Swift is always good. Excellent news for us the 33 seconds won in this stage for the favorites, with a few more bonus seconds that will be obtained throughout the rest of the race we can think of a decent place in the final GC.
@roturn In the report you mention that Swift was in 3rd place, but the results show Swift in 2nd place. Which one is the right result?

The results are correct. Can't remember as it's quite some time since playing. Might just be a typo.
Regarding Marco... Sorry for another serious Vesely sprint... Was really hoping that it would be different here... |

That 33 second gap is also not good for Claeys, got a double whammy here.

Ricki still got power at PCT level! Long overdue first good result for the team deserves a proper celebration:

There goes yesterday's bonus already. Not entirely unexpected, but still. Really need a good sprint tomorrow.

still so close, hard to conclude much from this result, just we are still alive for a GC result so far.

Prevar really strong there. Another good result for Popo4ever. Congrats fj
Borges was very well placed at the begining of the hill, but couldn't pounce on that. Still 5th is a solid result and fortunately there were little gaps behind so which makes enough room for puncheurs to fight for the GC. Let's see how this what this means.
Thanks for the reports roturn
