Gisborne GP
The Gisborne GP returns for its 8th edition. This year it is run as a C1 race having bounced between levels over the last few years, it was C2 in 2019 and C2HC before that. It was last a C1 event when Kinoshita won in 2016. The course on New Zealand’s North Island is also changed this year, while the total distance of 225km is about the same, some of the longer climbs in the last third of the race have been replaced by a series of shorter bumps as well as 3 punchy ascents at the finish versus 2 in prior years.
We will see if those changes move the race back in favor of the puncheurs. Last year Esteban Chaves won for Azteca ahead of Eddie Stobart’s Travis Meyer. Neither Chaves nor Azteca are back nor are any of other previous winners. Meyer is back but with the step up in the race category the competition looks much deeper this year.
This year we have 155 riders from 20 teams participating. Taking a look at the riders with 78+ hill we have:
| FL | HI | MT | AC | RS | Di Maggio | 65 | 82 | 65 | 75 | 68 | Beltran | 69 | 81 | 79 | 76 | 72 | Buchmann | 71 | 81 | 76 | 73 | 74 | Schreurs | 70 | 81 | 69 | 74 | 72 | Paulinho | 67 | 80 | 75 | 75 | 72 | Prevar | 72 | 80 | 71 | 73 | 70 | Borges | 70 | 80 | 70 | 81 | 73 | Dowsett | 70 | 80 | 65 | 71 | 69 | Moscon | 71 | 79 | 73 | 73 | 77 | Meyer | 74 | 79 | 69 | 77 | 71 | Edmondson | 70 | 79 | 69 | 76 | 72 | Turgis | 73 | 79 | 66 | 77 | 78 | De Plus | 72 | 78 | 76 | 72 | 73 | Benoot | 71 | 78 | 75 | 71 | 74 | Dyrnes | 68 | 78 | 72 | 77 | 73 | Flügel | 66 | 78 | 69 | 69 | 62 | Landa | 65 | 78 | 69 | 69 | 69 | Eiking | 71 | 78 | 69 | 76 | 74 | Mehr-Wenige | 74 | 78 | 66 | 67 | 69 |
Di Maggio is the sole 82 hill rider but his secondary stats are relatively weak. Buchmann and Beltran have 81 hill and the best MT capabilities. Among the others Turgis and Moscon have excellent resistance while Borges is probably the best sprinter among the favorites.
In addition to these top riders there are another 48 riders with 75 to 77 hill, so plenty of depth in the field. Among these riders Yates and Areruya stand out, both are decent in the hills and very good climbers with good resistance.
With the many quality punchuers present most of our favorites benefit from strong team support with Campari, GCN, Berg, Popo and Farfetch all boasting multiple strong riders. Only Beltran has a weak supporting cast while Meyer and Buchmann may also be isolated relatively early. Two other teams stand out for their depth, Gjensidige and Strava. While neither has a standout leader they both have multiple strong cards to play. Strava’s Felline is one of the better finishers in the field aside from those noted above.
Finally a look back in time – Maxime Montfort wins the 2015 GP Gisborne for current Man Game champions Gazelle.

Quite a few CT teams here. I will be watching the competition with great interest.
Beltran vs. Buchmann I think, with the former the favorite. Should be a fun race.

Good to be back here in our home race, one of our greatest days back in 2017 with Bennett winning plus Roux 4th, not expecting to replicate either of those results with Areruya even if he is as good as Bennett was then in this type of race given the new division. Hopefully we're visible and give the home fans something to cheer on the road

Was hoping to see Bennett here tbh. In especially after moving this race back to Xero eligible division.
So now it's about the home teams instead. Edmondson for BNZ might be the best bet then following by Areruya.
In total similar riders as in the TdU even though the stage is harder than all from Down Under.
Still went with Borges this time and expect a top performance by Edmondson and Turgis again.
Kind of lost any hope for Di Maggio in races with that much flat in between and also Schreurs is too inconsistent.
Beltran/Buchmann I haven't seen yet this year. First would love a harder race surely, still one of the best and top favorite I guess, later is still an unknown post training but looking good really and a rider perfectly suiting my team now with heine being no more German team. |

I think this is one for the climbers. Beltran probably, but I indeed wouldve fancied Bennetts chances

I thought the same, which is why I sent Yates. But I'm not expecting anything from him |

Competition is not so stiff after all, hoping for a Top 10 from Roux or Felline. Thanks for the preview!

Looking forward to see what Borges can do in a classic with so much climbing. Hopefully he'll keep his good form in Oceanian events.

Iirc last year it ended as pure puncheur finish. Wasn't it Gautier or so winning? Or Meyer?
edit: re-reading again, it was obviously a hybrid with Chaves but followed by a pure puncheur in Meyer, so kind of a puncheur race I`d say. |

The first test for De Plus, hoping for a tough race.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

What are your thoughts on your official 4th best puncheur in the PCT Areruya then?
And yeah I know for narrative and actual race reasons it would have been cool to send Bennett here and was quite close to, iirc it came to a choice between Maroc or ToME + Gisborne + some other hill classic which also had influences from Areruya and where he'd fit in best. Time will tell whether or not I went in the right direction

Need a win now, after the disaster in East Java.

Should I be worried that Moscon isn't on the list of riders to bet on?
Well, I agree it's pretty unlikely he'll win this one, but after the disaster in GORC, we need some sort of redemption.
Moscon is a better climber than quite some riders listed ahead of him, and his resistance will hopfeully help him to keep up with most of those PCT guys - except maybe for Beltran and Buchmann. Let's see...
