Typical flemish weather today, increasing winds, increasing rain. Perfect for watching the first real races of the year on tv!
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad recently got promoted to WT status, but this has always been a classic. This has to be some kind of record, but the winner of the 2006 and 2008 editions is back for 3rd. That's Philippe Gilbert of course, new in the Lotto team together with Tim Wellens. Two other riders return to win a 3rd, Ian Stannard (2014 and 2015 aka The Quick Step Nightmare) and Greg Van Avermaet (2016-2017), who has Trentin in support this year.
Other favourites that won once are Sep Vanmarcke (2012 - the only time Boonen got defeated that year), Michael Valgren (2018) and Zdenek Stybar (2019). Quick Step again with a strong team this year including Lampaert and Senechal. Other names to watch: Stuyven, Naesen, Teuns, Politt, Van Aert, Benoot and Kristoff
The day after there's Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne with the eternal question, breakaway or sprint? If we look at the last 10 years, it's about 50/50. The stronger cobblers are Stuyven, Lampaert, Stybar, Van Avermaet, Naesen, Politt, Valgren and Terpstra. Decent cobblers with a good sprinter are Trentin, Kristoff, Degenkolb, Colbrelli. Depending on how he does, keep an eye out for Merlier as well.
Also some classics in France this weekend and Le Samyn on tuesday to open the races in Wallonia, but someone else can do the preview for those

Love seeing Jonas Rutsch make a first impression! EF was full of praise already.
Nevermind I jinxed it.

Stuyven really strong there, but a few teams really need to get more down to earth. Rutsch??? How was Frison going to win this? What cobbled race has Trentin won to put him above GVA? I can understand SKA and Teunissen as they've showed some potential before, but still a difference with winning a WT classic. I'm a big fan of this no-nonsense riding, but a bit of thinking won't hurt.
WVA really strong for his first road race, but I do feel the best guy won.

The new course has more hills, but I still think it could be a sprint in Quick Step wants it. But I have my doubts Jakobsen can deliver after a hard race.

I’m starting to think Gianni Moscon is somehow related to Romano Fenati from MotoGP as they are two absolute pricks with everyone they race against. |

Lol this guy is so useless, it's beyond me how a team can still hold on to a fuck up like that. But then again, it's just brailsfraud things

Impressive win from Kasper Asgreen, together with the good stuff I've seen from Stybar and Lampaert, the wolfpack looks as good as ever
