We've got a new one! The Tour of Uppsala celebrates its inauguration in this 2019 season, joining the C1 ranks. And some of PCT's finest are here to celebrate the occasion and write their names into the history books. But before we have a look at the favorites, here's the route they'll compete on:

Profile
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/profiles/c1_upp.jpg

The race very plainly favors two kinds of specialists: time trialists and sprinters. The former will duel it out for the general classification on a short 5km prologue and the more decisive stage four while the latter have ample opportunity to score one - or multiple - stage wins and a nice points jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Jerome Coppel is the most prolific time trialist of the field - and by far the most well-paid. But his only appearance this year was disastrous when he finished 50th at the Vuelta al Pais Vasco's time trial. The ones here in Sweden are mostly flat though – his subpar mountain stat shouldn’t come into the equation that much.

He's challenged by a solid core of strong time trialists in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Marcel Kittel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Lucas Schädlich and the cycleYorkshire duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Luke Durbrige and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Emilien Viennet. They all vary slighty - Kittel has the best flat stat but the worst resistance, for instance - and when it comes down to it, Schädlich might be the least likely to enter the Top 3. But on a good day, any one of them could challenge for the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant - another addition to cycleYorkshire's top squad - complete the list of top favorites. They lack the pure technique in terms of time trialing but can claim to be the best rouleurs of this group.

Several other riders are surely capable of sneaking into the Top 5. Of these, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Haugard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Stannard (good lord, cycleYorkshire, relax!) are probably the strongest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Campenaerts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Li are noteworthy in the sense that they provide their team with another option should their leaders have a bad day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Golovash and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Ligthard are solid all around, though a little lacking in the resistance department, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kof.png Olman might suffer from his poor flat stat.

The sprint field is pretty deep, as is customary. But similar to the time trialists, one major rider stands slightly above the rest: local hero pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Jonas Ahlstrand. His combination of sprint and accelation isn't matched by anyone else.

Behind the Swede, it's basically anyone's guess. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish is the next best pure sprinter and has a strong leadout in not only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Willwohl but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kreder and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Gough, who have the potential to become one of the dominating sprint trains. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger are lacking just a little in terms of acceleration to the extent that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Silvestre might be considered more complete riders.

Those two also have the best flat stats, which combined with decent time trialing skills and, in the case of Silvestre, a really good prologue stat, might even let them intervene in the general classification if they can collect a few bonus seconds. The Portuguese has the malus of having easily the worst leadout (and entire team, for that matter) of the favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Manninen also has the skills to compete for a stage win on any of the sprint stages, especially with strong leadouts by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Lutsyshyn. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Selig and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Castaneda have to be considered more of a long shot, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake in comparison has the benefit of better flat and resistance stats but might share or switch roles with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Wippert.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki is mentioned ahead of several better sprinters only because of his time trialing abilities. It doesn't seem likely that he can compete for many bonus seconds, but sprints have been a bit all over the place lately and if he does collect some, it might net him a good GC position.

Probably just here to fill the startlist Grin so... Breakaways.

Would be nice to see Durbridge taking the overall victory.

valverde321
Purposely left out Hayakawa and Itami so that (hopefully) Kuboki contests the sprints. Given that he's not the best Prologuer or sprinter it will require consistency in all stages for him to do well.

Yeah! We are at home, time to deliver big time! Cool

May be the last competitive team results race in a while, cycleYorkshire should have that one in the bag. Overall totally different story.

Hoping the breakaways can be caught in time for sprint trains to form which should give Cav a good shot at a stage win.

Schädlich doesn't have any nasty hills to contend with, looking for him to fight for a top 5 GC place.

Thanks for the preview cunego59.

Time for Holloway to get back on his bike. Targeted this for the longer sprint stages which hopefully favor the more complete sprinters. Had good fortune in my first two C1's so might be due for a bashing by the cycling gods.

Thanks for the preview.

Need some good results from Ciolek here, because I don't have any TTers.

Thanks for the preview cunego59 Smile

WHAT A SENSATION! Cool Cool

I did not think the "home soil-bonus" was in PCM still? Ludvigsson most have gotten some extra by riding in Sweden for sure! Grin

Tamijo
Not really a surprise with more than 10% of the length being 5-8% uphill, just very hard to see from the profile.

Ludvigsson and Ratiy the only two with a fine prologue able to manage those kind of slopes unless they punch the climb, something it seems no one had energy left to do.

Congratz to viking.

Nice home win for viking

Given the ramp at the end I am very pleased with Schädlich and Cavs performances here.

Thanks for the report cunego59, I liked the red/green times Smile

I have big expectations here with a loaded team, hopefully this prologue isnt representative of what the overall will look like because honestly that is a terrible result. Sad

Not sure, what our guys were on. But we will probably finish at least 30-50 positions worse in the decisive TT Grin to finish the prologue ahead of Durbridge is kinda... interesting.. maybe Bond can somehow fight for a Top-30. I doubt it though.

17th is probably just under-par from Ligthart. Hopefully he improves a bit for the longer TT, and also doesn't lose any time on the flats.

Ugh, we clearly had a number of riders near the front with 3 km to go, but it all fell to pieces Frown

Holloway showing up the PCT sprinters once again Pfft

Kraftwerk riders manage a podium, 3 in the top 10 and 5 in the top 20! After Barbados they must need to ride hard to keep warm Smile

Congrats to Ulrich Ulriksen for Holloway's win after getting the inside line on that rather late corner.

Gate doing, what he's doing best. A pity that it wasn't for a KoM lead, but he's there, where he is supposed to be. That's fine enough.

Ulrich Ulriksen
Don't like to gloat but that was a text book example of managing and winning a sprint stage. We did the work to close the break, set up the lead out train and the top dog closed out the sprint.

Didn't really think we had the team to run an effective lead out, reading the report that made me nervous, I feel better with Holloway freelancing off the big teams. But I underestimated the team, they dropped him off in the perfect spot with the inside line. Good to see Frankovic playing a big role, like his flat/resistance combo.

Thanks for the report.

Well Rolland has been a great investment so far. Salcone too for minimum, but wasn't really expecting them to beat Kuboki. Either way leading the Team standings is nice. Sprint stage wasnt all that good for us tho.

AbhishekLFC
Not strong enough in the sprint as expected. Maybe we get one surprise result in the remaining flat stages somewhere.
