Welcome to the beautiful island of Tasmania, off the Australian South Coast. While the continental riders battle on the mainland in the Herald Sun Tour, the ProTour division comes here for it's sixth edition. The past two years this race was won by Coppel, however he rides in PCT now so can't defend his title. This race is the second-a-last PT race on the calendar, with only Giro di Lombardia remaining (and PTHC Maroc for some). Teams which are in the fight for the title or against relegation need to use this opportunity to score big against their opposition.

Profiles

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/profiles/pt_tasmania.jpg

Three stages: flat, hilly and individual. The first stage takes the riders from George Town to Launceston, which should under normal circumstances end in a sprint. The second stage starts in Devonport and finishes in Penguin, after a two local laps with a steep climb. The final stage is a short individual time trial around Sheffield.

Two former winners line up, and are contenders for the final victory again: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Hagen is the best puncheur, and a decent but not spectacular time trialist. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov is a worse puncheur but better time trialist, though not in his prime anymore. A good performance is necessary to save UBS from relegation.

The locals root for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Bobridge, as one of the best puncheur and time trialist in the race. No Australian has ever won the race, putting immense pressure on his shoulders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Kelderman are contenders for a podium spot, maybe the win if they are able to gain time on the hilly stage and defend that against the likes of Bobridge.

Riders who are really dependent on a good second stage, since they're not known for their time trial abilities, are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Gastauer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran.

Looking down the field we can find the more all-round type of riders, who are certainly in for a good result. Most notably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Izagirre, who has a wildcard and thus can't score ranking points, but will want to add this victory to his name. Other names belonging to this category are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Kangert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Bibby and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Dennis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Mohoric the clear favorite for the youth classification, without much competition.

Aside from the GC favorites, which mostly contain favorites for the second stage as well, there are riders purely targeting one stage.

The sprinters have a chance on the first stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen might be the best sprinter on paper, and he can handle a hill on the undulating road to Lauceston. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump another rider who can take a hills.

If the hills are not tough enough to drop the pure sprinters, we might be looking at a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek win, who also has the best leadout in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Vesely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis are other contenders. They only have one chance.

The time trial contains a small hill, but it remains to be seen whether this puts the true specialists in a disadvantage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Fiedler goes into that stage as favorite, together with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Zmorka.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Vlatos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Kittel are not known to climb well, but they can regain time on the flat sections. Though it's only a short time trial.

Outsiders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Yatsevich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sütterlin, and obviously the hybrids mentioned in the overall favorites section. Or a puncheur can surprise us all by blasting up the hill.

Let`s see how the race goes.

De Bie is a favourite for a good GC anyway.
Boom could maybe do very well in case of an easy hill stage.

No big expectations for Groenewegen`s sprint after this season. So anything can happen there.

Would love to see De Bie take some revenge for the Basque Country but he’ll need his absolute A-game. I think it’s finally Bobridge time though.
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Love the startlist and the lack of excellent sprinters.

Van Stayen looks like the obvious sprint favourite on day one. This time with a slightly mixed up leadout where Dzamastagic is the final man and Becis the likely penultimate leadout (or Smirnovs). Lets see how it works out.

If he can claim yellow on the first stage he could be in line for a strong gc too Smile

Gonna be an interesting race for sure, having been made for Coppel in the past this year is much more open.

We're here mainly for the sprint stage, seeing how Beltran has struggled on the hills this season. Hopefully Ciolek and Vesely can get it right, then at least a podium should be doable. Though, must admit I'm slightly nervous for the small hills on the route, and especially seeing how the preview was written. Fingers crossed we get a proper sprint finish, with the sprinters battling it out Pfft

Looking forward to this one, despite Coppel winning it last year, the hilly stage was great. Hopefully we get another exciting race and fight for the overall, as the final TT should help give us a tough hilly stage.

Well on paper we have a shot at all stages, but not the favorite anywhere and without my Spilak/Coppel combo to wreck the race we could be looking at a very low-scoring race. We need a miracle to overtake Vesuvio aswell as keeping Evonik behind.

Obviously an interesting race for Air France with EBH spending some race days here. Bobridge looks to be the favourite, but well, we will just have to destroy him in the hills then Wink

Breaks, breaks, breaks!

We're looking to exploit that 2nd stage with a decent result. GC is off-bounds for us though.

Thanks for the preview, Marco

Oh come on! Thats a gap behind Trentin. How often does that screw us? Pfft

Terrible leadout. Seems like it might not be a good idea to lead out your leader while sitting in his slipstream... Likely no huge gc result for us after this stage...

That's a textbook leadout if I ever saw one, nice win for Aker!

Wow, what a pleasant surprise! Grin Perfect execution, with a massive job done by both Trentin and Vesely. I really enjoyed that Smile

And even the yellow jersey, at least for a stage, which is cool. There's a long, long time since last time we had such a jersey in a race. Here's for hoping Beltran takes some kind of motivation and morale from this and sneaks inside the top 10 on the hilly stage.

Thank you for the report, Marcovdw!

Not a bad stage for my team to be honest, being in the break and Soupe trying in the sprint. Got nothing from it, but happy anyway

Domenic Weinstein! What a great fall for our new young talents.

Cavagna wore white in ToNE, Sagiv got second in a Deutschland stage, Wackermann wore the KoM jersey and finished tied second there too, and now Weinstein wears white and gets extra points for being second in GC for a stage.

Stage 2 went according to plan for us too, it was important to not get caught out by the favorite attacks, as only a disaster in this race could've made the rankings close, so Kelderman attacking first made perfect sense.
I expect Wilco to end up in 9th or 10th after the TT, which will surely be enough to seal the deal. Smile
