Well, i guess it's time we have a proper thread for the first Grand Tour of the season, as it starts today
The startlist is led by defending champion Tom Dumoulin, current Tour and Vuelta winner Chris Froome, last year's fourth Thibaut Pinot and two-times former podium Fabio Aru. Other riders that should compete for the GC are Esteban Chaves, Domenico Pozzovivo, Miguel Angel Lopez, Davide Formolo, Louis Meintjes and Michael Woods
For the sprint, the biggest name is Elia Viviani, with Quick-Step having brought here a team dedicated only to him. There are also sprinters like Sam Bennett, Jakub Mareczko, Niccolo Bonifazio, Ryan Gibbons, Danny van Poppel or Sacha Modolo that could avoid a total domination by Viviani, but the sprinting field is really weak here
Other interesting riders in this race are the full squad of Astana, that are "sure" to win at least 4 stages in this race with Luisle, Lutsenko, Hirt, Bilbao, Kangert and Villella in support of M.A.Lopez, also Tim Wellens and Rohan Dennis for a surprise GC result or stage wins, though in general, as i have already said, the startlist is kinda weak for a GT

Other races would have been fine too
THanks for making the thread.

Also, Chris Froome crashing while recognising the TT of today. It's obvious that Giro isn't a race for Sky

And also Siutsou seems to have crashed before the start and might be out with a broken collarbone... |

Im interested to see the likes of Carapaz and Roson Garcia with a free role here. Maybe no GC contender but plenty of guys who could contribute to a great race.

And Miguel Angel Lopez another rider to crash in the recon...though, he is fine while Froome was limping right after the crash.
Was there ever a GT that started with so many crashes before the first stage? |

Yeah absolutely, but if you got Valverde, Quintana, Landa, Soler and Amador and you send this team?

Movistar indeed weird. In the end they will end up having 4 or 5 of their top guys in the Tour and don`t win there anyway I think.
Seems a bit of a too one-dimensional thinking with their TdF/Vuelta focus.
Their Giro team nevertheless should bring some joy and tactical options though. |

Roson isn’t even racing here, though, along with Carapaz, was sure to entertain during the three weeks. I assuming they are attempting to go full power at the Tour abd then try to win the Vuelta later on with either Landa or Valverde. But this could have been a good race for the likes of Soler to show their leadership abilities. |

Movistar has zero interest in the Giro. They care about the Vuelta (their market) and the Tour (global interest). It's understandable that they lay all their eggs in the events that matter to them, even though the Giro has gained much more international attention in recent years.

That really bothers me, I'm hoping he could save his crashes for the actual racing!

Lots of passion for cycling and Giro here in Israel. I quite like it and they definitely pulled off an amazing team presentation yesterday.

Looks like a tech route with not much longer straight sections, should be a nice start of the giro.

Footage of the Froome crash, looks a relatively heavy one...
https://www.insta...Wuz_6nWjO/
...and yes, apparently reports of Lopez suffering abrasions in a recon crash and Siutsou is out after coming down pre stage

Last year Quinntana?
Very much interesting to winning that Giro. Even with throw away he's tour results with that. |
