24/8/2017 Angry Reddit user creates cycling team through crowdfunding
Reddit user Vien has started a Kickstarter campaign to set up a professional cycling team.
In his announcement post on /r/Peloton, the aspiring manager stated he wants to bring back cycling to the fans. "Cycling has become a sport of zero-risk riding and a lot of shady deals between managers, making the sport extremely boring to watch. We want to make a change to that by providing clarity to everyone"
Reddit, the #4 most visited website in the United States, is a massive online discussion forum. Over the past few years there have been several incentives on Reddit to fund professional sports teams, mainly in esports, although most of them turned out to be either for single tournaments only or scams.
Vien is planning to let the major decisions, such as signing the riders, completely to the users of Reddit by creating polls that are available for all registered users. "No dirty games in our team. We want to create a complete democracy". Vien also announced that users can get rewards for funding his campaign, such as becoming the sponsor of riders, getting their username on the team bus or having a vote on which races the team will participate in. He is planning to release more details soon.
Whether his idea will be successful remains to be seen. So far, Vien has refused to show any proof of credibility, and according to sources, has a rather dubious reputation amongst officials.
As for the aspirations of the team, the soon-to-be-manager wrote: "I'm expecting absolutely nothing, but I know I'll still get disappointed".
25/8/2017 Reddit cycling team starts first major poll as crowdfunding campaign reaches €1 million
Spoiler A brand new cycling team funded through Kickstarter has already collected € 1 million within 24 hours.
The team, named Team Reddit, was started on August 24 by user Vien as an answer to the bureaucracy-filled cycling culture.
Despite the manager’s optimism, it is still unknown if the manager is capable of obtaining a CT license. The salary costs alone will cost the team over €1.2 million.
Vien has already started his first poll on the team’s subreddit, /r/TeamReddit. Users are able to vote for their three favourite C2 and C2HC races. The winner will become a guaranteed win goal, whereas the other results will strongly influence the team’s minor goals for the 2017 season. “It is hard for me to predict the outcome of this. That’s what makes this so exciting”.
According to Alexa.com, 44% of the site’s userbase is from the United States, hinting at a priority for the Tour of the Battenkill. However, the subreddit itself is primarily dominated by European cycling fans.
When asked if he was afraid for users not taking polls seriously, he said: “It’s Reddit. We can certainly expect some troll votes. Let’s hope that our beloved fans will take this team seriously enough to make the haters' influence as marginal as possible”.
3/9/2017 Announcement on /r/TeamReddit
Spoiler Dear Redditors,
The news had already leaked out, but I’m glad to announce that Team Reddit has gained enough funds to be accepted as the 24th and final CT team! We’re currently working on the final preparations for the transfer season, and, as we’ve promised, you will have a huge influence on its outcome!
As for the team goals, we’ve received your votes and sent in your 4 favourite races, as well as an overall CT ranking goal. Sadly we are not allowed to publish them for now. The poll was influenced by trolls, but if you have taken your time to vote, it means you care about the team as well, right? In other words, trolls: We listened to you too, and we will be visiting your favourite race as well.
All countries are allowed to create a subreddit, which will be named /r/TeamReddit<country code>, for example /r/TeamRedditUSA or /r/TeamRedditBEL. Each subreddit will get a budget based on the amount of members the subreddit has at the moment the transfer season starts. You are free to sign any riders you wish from this budget. Of course, if your country’s budget isn’t enough to sign a rider and you wish to pair up, or if you wish to sign a leader with the help of other subreddits, you are free to do so. Please don’t bamboozle us, we do need 15 riders to start the season with!
That’s all for now. Remember that the first season will only be used as a test, and we will only be looking to shoot for promotion in the second season. We will come back to you once the transfer season has started. Hopefully we will be able to show you our jersey by then as well. Good luck finding members for your subreddit!

Hey guys! Overjoyed and pleasantly surprised to be back.
As you can see, I want to create a story around Reddit users deciding everything about the team. Now just as a disclaimer, don't worry, it's obviously fake and I will make all the decisions.. But I guess that's how most democracies work in the end, right?
Feel free to post now! Good luck to all managers this season |

As mentioned before, the riders of Team Reddit were signed by Reddit's subreddits who gained a budget equal to their number of members. After a transfer season that took a lot longer than expected, we are finally able to present what the many communities came up with.
Funded by many Eastern European countries together, our main leader and most expensive rider will be Mikayil Krasnoperov. 80MO and 73TT might sound awesome for a CT rider, but as with most Eastern European products theres quite a catch: His substats are dreadful. Especially his 60FL and 68HI may overshadow his ability to time trial. Therefore his performance will be quite unpredictable, though it might give us quite an exciting season.
Coming over from Valio-De-Laval is Winner Anacona. The 29-year old Colombian is a more well-balanced alternative to Krasnoperov, and they will most likely switch the teams leadership depending on the form of the day.
The gift from our Italian community will be Andrea Manfredi. The 25-year old has comparable but slightly worse stats than Krasnoperov, and will hopefully be helping him to get some victories.
Other domestiques are Jean-François Camier, Kevin Seeldraeyers, Alex Vuillermoz from Strava, and our road captain, Emanuele Sella. They are all solid climbers with nice fighter stats, so I hope they will be able to perform an attack or two in the mountains.
Leadership in the hilly stages and stage races will be shared by Maxime Monfort and Julien Simon, two veterans with a huge amount of experience. Monfort is the better climber and attacker, while Simon prefers to wait and finish off stages with his strong sprint. Together we are hoping they will give us some points in the hilly C2HC races, though were not expecting many victories from them.
The Asian community has also gathered and scrapped together some money to give us Haijun Ma, a time trial veteran. The 32-year old has acted in TTT trains for his entire career, and now hopes to be able to do well individually in a CT team. We are hoping for some top 10-finishes with him and also expect him to prepare the team for sprint finishes.
We are also proud to present a nice allrounder from the Netherlands here in Bob Schoonbroodt. He is a great puncheur, but due to being the only one with a respectable CO stat we will prepare him for leading the cobbled races. Despite only having 74CO, we are hoping (read: Praying) his hill stat and the lack of hilly cobblers in the CT will make him worth the leadership.
We are extremely proud of the Australian community for giving us Cameron Meyer, who in our eyes was a 100k bargain. Aside from his very strong sprint he is also able to TT quite well, and his prologues are lethal. Since there are plenty of prologues in the CT were hoping that this guy can score us a serious amount of points.
Another signing for the Dutchies is Ismaël Kip. The 29-year old is an amazing sprinter, but with his 69FL he has always had some trouble with keeping up with the pace of a peloton. Just like Krasnoperov, we have no idea how he will perform and hope he will act as a wildcard in most races.
Belgian sprinter Lars Croket also joined the cause for only 50k. He is very good at sprinting, but he likely lacks the acceleration to be able to win a lot of sprints himself. Therefore we expect him to be the leadout man for either Kip or Meyer. His cobbled stat is decent too, so we will allow him to have a free role in those races and allow him the sprint for victory, should the race pace be slower than expected.
Another leadout man will be Hersony Canelon, who has the acceleration that Croket lacks, but is a bit weaker at sprinting. We considered loaning him out to improve his sprinting ability, but we deemed him to valuable for the team to take that risk.
Apart from the community signings we also loaned in Jesse Kaislavuo, Varsham Darbinyan and Luc Turchi in order to be able to field 8 riders at every race. Welcome!
Im okay with how the transfer season went. Since I had prior experience with transfers and no real region lock to work with, I put quite a bit of pressure on myself to create something competitive. The new C2HC races forced me to try to create a well-rounded team, so that was what I went for. I originally wanted to go for a team that focused on the hills and cobbles, but the competition on hilly terrain put me off and I wasnt able to sign anyone for the cobbles (Havik -> Fenn -> Gaudin -> Nooytens
sigh). Not signing a true leader for the cobbles will hurt me, as my goals are for the cobbled races, so I hope Schoonbroodt can perform a miracle there.
Overall I hope that Krasnoperov can do well, and that having two mountain leaders will give us an adventage over the many other mountain-focused teams. Im not planning to promote yet, so I hope this will give us a strong base for next season considering Ill only have to replace the puncheurs due to their age.
(Oh, and we signed zero American riders despite having our HQ in the US. Guess Ill just blame Trump for that.)
Let the season begin! |

I think its a good squad you managed to build, very good depth in mountains and sprint wise it looks good aswell even if those flat stat in Krasnoperov and Kip Always is a bid worrying.
Good luck! |

It's great that my former leader and almost WC Sella has found a team for one more year. I felt bad seeing him still in the Free Agency so late in transfers. Kip is another rider I had in my team before. For me he was shit, hope he performs better for your team. |

Starting from scratch, looks like you've had a succesful transfer season, reflecting the previous experience of team management. Key to your season looks to be how you get on in the very competitive CT mountain battles this season.
I think for the hilly rated cobbled races, Schoonbroodt is a very solid top 3 bet unless I've missd some key movements in the transfer season. Perhaps main competitor to Van Keirsbulck in those berg filled cobbled tussles. His versatility mean that he is an excellent rider to have at CT level, I expected himto end up in the PCT from the free agency market.
Should be a very solid CT outfit that will easily contest for a top 10 standings position.

Got to say Schoonbroodt for that price is a real steal, he should do really well on the hilly cobbles, be a decent scorer on the flat cobbles, possibly still getting top 10's and be a good domestique on the hills.
