Now it's time for yet another race with terrible coverage, as the Vuelta al Pais Vasco has started today. The race seems to have an easier course than the last few years, but in the end the riders make the race
This one actually seems like it could end in a sprint.
This one's a bit harder, but the final climb seems rather easy, at least too easy to make it very selective.
Stage 3 seems more like it  Moar hills
Or not
At least the Eibar stage is still left. It should end in a real battle between the best climbers in the field
And then again the ITT to end the race. It seems a bit easier and flatter than the last few years, just like the rest of the race.

Seems to me both really like Sean de Bie as well 
Incredibly boring stage but quite a nice finale. Alaphilippe attacked at the final bump then punctured in the descent to the line, Matthews wins the sprint of a reduced pack. Contador lost around 1'05", not sure what happened.

Not only was Alaphilippe robbed an easy win by that, but they apparently penalised him 2'19! Pretty ridiculous given he was in the pack at 3 km to go.
Oh well, he can still win a couple of stages..
And this route sucks for itzulia standards. Only one selective road stage + ITT. Screams Contador to me this one. |

Sadly, I assume it's because the rule says you get s.t. if the puncture/mechanical occurs in the final 3km, not if you drag out an earlier incident until the 3km mark.
The latter could obviously still work if you hide in a group long enough for nobody to realize, but since he was in plain view and alone...
Still pretty ridiculous considering the lax enforcement of the sidewalk rules in comparison.

No. He claimed that two riders crashed in front of him and he could not avoid that. But he claimed that he fell on the grass - no problem for him.

That is the problem with the UCI rulebook, it's so vaguely written and unevenly enforced. The Alaphilippe decision was the correct one but I can understand why some might see it as unfair seeing as we know riders have ridden with punctures into the final 3km the call for help thus falling under the 3km rule. I think the UCI rules need re-writing and better enforcement implemented as they just aren't working at the moment.
