The crisis of Italian cycling
Italian cycling in my opinion is in crisis, especially in one-day races. What do you all think?
One ProTour team is really small thing...

There are Aru and Nibali and then too little
That's just not true, Italy has good cyclists on the way and nothing wrong with one WT team and four PCT teams, Spain only has one of each. Aru, Felline, Bonifazio, Malori, Viviani, Modolo, Formolo, Colbrelli, Trentin, De Marchi are enough to show that Italy is still a force with younger riders also coming through. Nibali still has plenty to offer and the same goes for Pozzovivo, Ulissi and there are others. They might not be the super power that they once were but that goes for a heap of the old established powers in cycling thanks to more riders from different countries coming into the system.

only Aru and Paolini...
Just showing this doesn't prove much, do you realise that in individual stages in the WT stage races that Italian riders have won 20 stages! I don't think Italian cycling is in the crisis you think it is

Italian cycling is definatly in crisis. No doubt. Bar Nibali and Aru the top class riders are lacking.
Very sad there is only 1 Italian WT team left. All the Italian teams left are run on money that comes from Eastern Asia (Merida, Nippo, Southeast).
made a post a couple months ago about how great the generation before this one was:
But the Italians had such an immensely big talent pool these last 20 years.
Marco Pantani
Mario Cipollini
Paolo Bettini
Michele Bartoli
Alessandro Petacchi
Davide Rebellin
Gilberto Simoni
Stefano Garzelli
Paolo Savoldelli
Ivan Gotti
Mirko Celestino
Gabriele Colombo
Gianluca Bortolami
All born in like a 5 year stretch. All won either a GT or a monument. Truly incredible. Doubt we will ever see anything like that again from one country in such a short time span so many top riders.
But even compared to generations before that one Italy is not as strong at the top at the moment

No country amongst the established cycling nations are stacked at the top with talent anymore, all of Spain's are ageing outside of Landa who needs to back it up next season, France is on the way back up but not one rider who can be considered a force, Belgium have Gilbert and GVA with the rest either young or past there best, Netherlands don't have a real top shelf star but Dumoulin is coming up, Germany are getting better. Italy doesn't look to bad when you look at it, I wouldn't call it a crisis but call it the changing face of cycling with the talent pool spread over more countries than it was 20 years ago

If italian cycling is in crisis what about French ? Spanish ? Bar Conta/Valv/Purito (who will be gone in year or 2?
The fact is that there are TOO many "small" countries with good riders. Like Norway, Poland, Great Britain, Slovakia...even Colombia. And this make it harder for the "big" nations fo dominate.. Yeah, this generation isn't that dominating.....but that's life//sport. There is NO way in hell one country to dominate the world of ANY (international) sport year after year, generation after generation.. There are good times and bad times....and if this is Italy's "bad times"...there's nothing to complain.
Look at France, as example.....what about France ?
There are 3 GTs.
There are hundreds of countries.
Cycling is becoming a global sport, slowly but steadily. Last World Champions were Polish and Slovakian to prove that point.
Italy has won 1/3 Grand Tours.
That's no crisis.
Sure, Italy isn't the strong Italy it used to be.
Same for France.
Same for Belgium (we're in a crisis because there's no new Merckx? Doesn't work that way)
Same for any one country.
Like Strydz said, cycling is becoming more global and one country can't win them all. I'd say winning the Vuelta with a 25 year old rider isn't the face of a country in crisis. It's the face of a decent country in modern cycling. Wish I could say the same for Belgium

The wins are not so many and the champions of today are not those of the past, even though many of them there is a suspicion of doping.
