I'm that one kid that got picked on for wearing lycra or as they call it “tights”. I could never really fit in anywhere off the bike. I was always that awkward 12th man from Lithuania that never got in the game but I was always enthusiastic handing out high fives and flicking towels.

To get somewhere in cycling you have to be the best! You have to be able to attack out of the peloton and hold them off. Or sprint at the end and hold of the fastest men in the world. It is one of the highest demanding sports in the world and there's no questioning that.

If you crash, your gone. If you fly, you win. If you dope, your gone. There is only one way to win in cycling...and that is to be the best! I'm not sure if I'm the best but this is my time, This is my life and What a Life it is!

My name is Matas 'The Flash' Zukauskas. I am 18 years old from Lithuania.

History

I grew up in Vilnius which is the capital city of Lithuania. The scenery here is amazing with awesome churches, massive buildings and great views almost everywhere you go.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/History%20Pic%201_zpsi2rtzcm5.jpg

I grew up in a rather large family with 4 brothers and 3 sisters. My dad, Lukas Zukauskas, was actually a professional cyclist back in the day. I guess that's where I got all my natural talent from. I started cycling at the same time as my brothers and sisters. My twin brother, Kajus (or Kaj for short), and I were both 7 years old when we started cycling. We are the two youngest. We are also 2 of only 3 of us still riding to this day. The other still riding is our older sister Gabriele (or Gab for short). Gab actually got signed recently by the Orica – AIS women's team which is a massive achievement for her.

Anyway, by the age of around 14 Kaj and I were always the best out of the family. We were even beating dad! I could always stick with Kaj until we rode up the big mountains. I was always horrible at riding mountains. I could do everything else except ride up the big mountains. If there was a sprint though or cobbles I would always beat and drop Kaj. We worked out that I was a really strong and fast rider, which means that I could ride cobbles really well and sprint like a madman! Kaj was the complete opposite. He wasn't anywhere near as strong as I was but he could ride so fast in an individual time trial and he would ride up those mountains like he forgot to pee before he left!

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/History%20Pic%202_zpsal4z2ei9.jpg

Eventually Kaj and I both got signed to a small amateur cycling team called Dukla Trenčín-Trek. The team that also found Peter Sagan. This team is really what helped us get our names out there. Kaj was winning a lot. When I say that I mean it, there's no exaggeration there. He was unstoppable! He would win every general classification like he had no competition. Then suddenly in September he crashed and severely broke his collarbone. Not only did that end his season he also lost the contract he had recently signed with Cannondale Cycling Team. He was gutted! Luckily Dukla resigned him for one more year to try and get him winning again.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/History%20Pic%203_zpscvb4true.jpg

For me I was lucky and had no serious crashed throughout the season. I signed with a rather new team. They offered me a young rider role which is always good for the first season. I am there to learn. I am only 18 so I want to learn the ways of a cyclist.

I am a very happy man at the moment! I am looking forward to my first season as a professional cyclist. I hope its a good one!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Nice to see you introducing another story to your growing collection, Good Luck mate Smile

Jakstar22
Thanks Sutty! This one is going to be my main focus for a while as I have already raced a lot of the races for the next season on Nairo Quintana. I'm hoping that this story will be different to my others and that you all see that Smile

The Team

So the team I signed for. It is a new continental French team with some top quality riders. I am very blessed to be given this chance to race professionally with such a good quality bunch of riders! Let's hope I can work hard for them but also win some races in the process.
So here we go:

The Contract

Length of Contract: 1 year
Salary: 4.500 €/month
Status: Young Rider

Matas DOB: 17.06.1994
Matas Weight: 84 kg
Matas Height: 184 cm

So I signed a 1 year contract with Airbus Cycling Team for the 2013 season. I am very excited for the road ahead. I am not sure where it is going to lead but I am super excited! My role as a young rider means I will get chances to race for myself but I will mainly be doing leadout duties or working for the cobbles leader.

Of course there will be the odd lower category race that I will be a Free Element in. However, I will be doing water bottle duties and working as a leadout man for the team sprinter/leader.

So this is basically all I got told. This is what it had on my contract and this is what the management is telling me. I will soon be riding a training camp with everyone in France. I have to go catch a plan now so I will post to you from France.

Goodbye for now

Calender

Hey everyone!!

I am in France! Can you believe it!!

Anyway my calender for the year. So team management has given me a calender but only for the first half of the season. I am happy with the calender although it is not finalised yet. They said they would still be adding races but this is just a guide (remember we are a Pro Continental team so we need to get wild cards for the World Tour races).

So I will start my season of with the French hilly one day race of GP la Marseillaise. I want to start of well here with either a top 10 or a victory for the leader. I will then travel to Qatar for the 6 day stage race of the Tour of Qatar. This will be the first test of my lead out duties towards the team sprinter so I am really looking forward to it! After the Tour of Qatar we head to Belgium for the Le Samyn. I will be the leader here. Another important one in my calender. I will then race in the Strade Bianchi. A very exciting race that I have always loved on tv! I then race another 3 cobbled races which are Dwars Door Vlaanderen, E3 Prijs Harelbeke and Gent – Wevelgem. 3 races that always attract a great field of riders. If I do well in these races I could be racing Paris – Roubaix as well. This race is the one race I really want to race so I will have to work really hard to get there!

The next race on my calender is the Presidential Tour of Turkey. I will be the head sprinter at this race so I hope to show off my sprinting skills. Next up I will race the 4 Jours de Dunkerque. Once again head sprinter. I then take a bit of time off until the Tartu GP at the end of May. I will be head sprinter and I hope to come away with a top 3. I then race the Route du Sud which will be an exciting race for me. I will then race the Osterreich Rundfahrt where I will be the head sprinter. This is a goal for the sponsor so I really hope I do well. I will then race either the Tour de Pologne or Tour de Wallonie. Depends on if we get invited to race in the Tour de Pologne or not.

Well that's my schedule so far. I will let you all know when something changes!

I'll seeya very soon!

The cobbles are nice!
4 jours is always a fun race so I expect him to ride aggressively there Wink

And maybe the Vuelta is an option? We'll have to see, though!

Yes I expect him to do quite well in the cobbles. and I have never raced 4 jours so I'm looking forward to racing it with Matas.

The Vuelta might be. It all depends on if we get a wildcard. We got one for the Tour because we are a French team with Coppel, Pinot and Dumoulin. We didn't get the Giro but if we get the Vuelta it very well might be Matas' first Grand Tour!

Flashback #1

Being back in France reminds me of my childhood. I went to school in Lithuania for a while but eventually my teachers said that they would no longer teach me. Their reasons was that I was a student that never paid attention in class. Looking back I have to agree with them now. I wasn't a trouble kid or a loud kid and or quiet kid or a bad kid. I was a bored kid. I knew everything that the teachers were talking about. I was one of the smartest students in my year. I would get As on all my assessments but I never studied, did homework or paid attention in class. My parents realised that there was only one option. So they decided to send me of to boarding school in France. I was still really smart but the teachers here didn't tolerare slacking off. I realised I now had to pay attention in class. That was the only option I had to stop getting in trouble all the time.

Live Coverage

There go the opportunists!

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/GPM%201_zpslcdkuem4.jpg

A very fast pace was being set at the front.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/GPM%202_zps75wuasyw.jpg

Gallopin got boxed in. I knew I had to think quickly. I decided to use initiative and follow the attacks of the favourites and just sit on them.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/GPM%203_zpsfvlnqf1x.jpg

I'm the one at the back that is struggling to stay with them.

Gallopin finally got out of the peloton. He has a lot of catching up to do.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/GPM%204_zpsn4uqsiom.jpg

I got over the top of the final climb in the front group. This is now my turf.

3km to go.

i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/GPM%205_zpsq1z6owkp.jpg

I started my sprint with 2km to go. By 1km to go I was leading by 3 bike lengths.

Wow.....

I...I...I really don't know what to say. My first race as a professional ends in a victory! Wow! How did that even happen!!! I remember pushing so hard just trying to stay with everyone going up the climb and then next minute I'm celebrating at the finish! I even got a 24 second gap in the sprint!! Wow!!

I got to go
