Dutch Food Valley Classic returns to the Man-Game after a year on the sideline. Though it is not completely pan flat, this race should nonetheless be one for the sprinters. Let's take a look at the previous winners of Dutch Food Valley Classic:
2010: | | Raul Granjel Cabrera (Sony Ericsson) | 2011: | | Staf Scheirlinckx (Quiksilver-Kraft) | 2012: | | Antonio Bucciero (Team Metinvest - Slovnaft) |
The only previous winner also turning up for this years edition is Raul Granjel Cabrera, this time turning up in the outfit of Mobil - Aeropostal. The Cuban is surely once again one of the big favorites for the win, but will meet tough competition in Ivano Lo Cicero who on paper is the fastest man in the field. Supported by quick riders such as Sascha Modolo and Yukiya Arashiro, Meiji - Cannondale has assembled a strong team to lead their man to victory.
Leading the opposition is Heineken - Cal Giant. After being on a string of good results lately topped by a win in Tour of Vancouver, the American team will hope for more success here, bringing Dan Holloway as their captain. Also hoping to do well is Maxime Vantomme and Mark Cavendish. Vantomme will be aiming for a good result in order to strengthen Quickstep's promotion chances, while the latter will hope to gather much needed points for his team to climb out of the relegation sone.
A flat HC classic for the sprinters has not been raced after Down Under Classic opened the PCT-season back in January. That race was won by Danilo Kupfernagel. The German will be hoping to recreate his surprising win from Australia. Joining him as outsiders are Privatbank - Nemiroff duo Maciej Ulanowski and Kobe Vanoverschelde, and the russian rocket Roman Maksimov who has strong support in his leadout man Saulo Lay.
Paride Grillo supported by Bernhard Eisel, Alexandr Nepomnyachsniy, Mathieu Drujon, Anthony José Brea and Enrico Gasparatto are not to be left out of the discussion. Although these riders first and foremost will be fighting for positions from 6th-15th, any one of them could enter the top 5 on a good day.
Meanwhile, Team Puma - SAP, FCB - Polska, Compal - Merida, Bacardi Limited and Team CSC - Orbea will mainly be hoping for a break away to keep away from the peleton in order to win the race. That being said, Adam Pierzga, Chan Jae Jang, Jure Kocjan and Michaël Delage might have a shot at a decent result in a bunch sprint.

AMEXpc's 2013 sprint season was a disaster, as we found numerous was to loose race after race. Our early season results have shown some promise with a couple of top 10 finishes. Let's not kid ourselves we are not contenders in this format but with some improvement we are hoping Grillo can top 10 and maybe eek out another slot or 2 higher.

Vantomme will suck a dick I expect, at this point though I don't care he'll have a dirt cheap wage next year. #positives
Looking forward to reports. This period with more activity and reports shown me how I missed this game.

First of 4 races like this, and this will probably be my worst as Horizon Park and Interlagos are my team's goals and Melaka fits my sprinters better.

I don't think I have the leadout train for a good results in classics. With only one decent sprinter outside of Holloway on the roster we really are counting on the efforts of others to get a decent position. If we are lucky we have a chance.

The top10 is the desired for this race, but with a team split between this race and Interlagos will not be easy to Kupfernagel repeat the success of the opening race.
Lo Cicero for the win

Back to racing for points again. So happy the game is running again. Judging by Gasparotto's year so far though, not expecting much. May have to pray for a breakaway.
Hard to choose between the favourites. Someone like Vantomme could sneak a win I think. |

I have picked a strong team here to lead Cav out, if he makes it that far.

I'm glad to see sprinters galore here. Haussler should only have to deal with Van Stayen in La Tropicale Amissa Bongo |

FFS. With this kind of luck/effort, we're going down. Seriously? Last from that group?
Not that Sütterlin is any kind of sprinter, don't get me wrong, I know that.
But Cieslik is -3Fl, +2 Sp...

At least my team did rather well with Super Marios getting fifth and Vanoverschelde actually helping Ulanowski in the bunch sprint to get a few points.

Pawel Cieslik delivers a surprising 4th place finish out of a day long breakaway. Put those points in the bank.
