Some of you may have read about my idea for this thread, and here it is! Every week I or one of my staff will post a dilemma here in this thread, about something kept out of mainstream news etc., which you can discuss. If you have an idea for the weekly dilemma, feel free to send it to one of us.
The rules:
Although discussions don't really have rules, I want you to use these written unwritten rules:
1. Remain on-topic.
2. Don't insult others
3. Back up your stance with arguments.
4. React to arguments, not to persons.
Together with my staff I will check if you are able to follow these rules.

The first dilemma will be the eco-skyscraper. In China, the building of such a skyscraper has started in Changsha. Feel free to discuss about these, and if it's a good development to see these coming.

What it basically is is farms which produce for the entire population of the building, fully ecological, no damage at all to the environment

So how is this supposed to be a bad thing?

I thought the same initially but when I thought about it more there was one thing that really bothered me if I were to live in on of those eco-skyscrapers. everything is artificial, it just doesn't feel right

It's basically the next evolution of the Smart City idea. By living, working, playing all in the same building it is possible to minimize the environmental impacts while also creating the buildings at a minimum cost.
The interesting part of the Sky City project is not that you never need to leave, or that it is ecological, but that they believe they can build a 2000m tall structure in 90 days (plus 120 for substructure work).
The idea of only needing to live inside one place is not overly new. It's the same idea NASA have been funding, researching and testing for decades to aid in long distance space travel. It's certainly possible to do for a couple of years. Taking it into a public realm is not out of the picture either and in many ways we are not too far away from a situation like that.
We've already taken the first steps. Look at how Hotels often link up with large shopping centers. You can sleep, eat, play and work all without leaving the building complex. It's not beyond reason to extend such a complex to include hospitals or schools.
Is that a good thing though? Or why would that be a bad thing?

I can only imagine staying in one place my entire life. That sounds absolutely horrible to me.

Why? That's very common thing in Serbia and Europe generally (asaik), especially if you're living in a house.

Yes, but in most cases people do get out of their house, their town, their country. I think there are only very, very few people that have never really left their town.

Aah, that's totally different story tehn. I thought BBL was talking about living when he said staying.

Yes, your computer.
Sounds good enough.

One thing: if you have an idea for a new dilemma, feel free to PM it to me and perhaps you'll see it back later on.

I think the whole thing with staying in one place your whole life depends on what type of person you are and what you actually want to do with your life. If you are happy to live in a building for 90 years without touching real grass or swimming in an ocean then I guess it isnt a horrible idea. However, people like myself and most cyclists/sportsmen like being outdoors. Hearing the sounds of nature, being rained on, feeling the sun on your skin, etc. But in places like Hong Kong and some cities in China nature and forests dont exist so I doubt many feel that way in those countries.
Another thing is that you will never meet new people unless they come into your building. Going to public places, other cities and other countries not only allows you to see the world but you meet new people, learn new things and maybe even fall in love with the country and move to it.
A positive is that if they farm and grow food in the building then it means that they do not need to buy land elsewhere and they will not need to import as mch food as they currently do.
That is mostly opinion but either way

TMM says it's pretty much living in one place, so I imagine is doing everything there, including sleeping. And is that good for the environemnt?
Well, if we look at how much China pollutes, it may be good, but it's something very small, since China is a country with 1 billion people, and if, let's say, 1000 work in that building and do everything (that means little use of car, and probably use of bicycles), it's still a very small step regardin China's pollution levels. |
