Major stage race for every rider that wants to shine in Ardennes classics!
Starts today with Stage 1 (Ordizia-Ordizia 154km):
Should be an exciting race with the likes of Valverde, Gilbert, Betancur, Slagter, Rui Costa, Contador, Kwiatkowski.
Very much looking forward to this.

Yay Pais Vasco time! I have a soft spot for this race, it always seems rather overshadowed by what happens the day before it and the day after it, but nevertheless usually produces some exciting racing.

Actually Betancur was ill and wasnt trainning till last week. He only decided to take part last week and he is only here to build some form for the Ardennes classics. I think this has Contador all over it. |

Kreuziger is also in the race, mainly to build for the Ardennes.

Same for Simon Gerrans too obviously. He's been out for a while, though MSR wasn't a planned absence. Be interesting to see if he can sneak a stage victory similar to last year's.
No World Tour or Pro-Continental Basque teams to speak of, so Pais Vasco shall have to shine brighter than ever before. Though you could call it a good marketing opportunity for Caja Rural given some of the riders they have attending. Amets for another crazy three days straight in the breakaway?

Looking at the profile of todays stage the race will be on and i expect big attacks on final climb.
As for favorites i think Valverde will win the GC and problably gonna win today stage as well,he is looking super strong,he got a great team and i think is the fresher of GC guys as this is his first world tour stage race of the year.
As for the rivals i expect the world champion to be in the mix,Kwiatkovski if is near the form he shown a month ago and Contador but in his case i expect him to be a litlle tire because he did Tirreno and Catalunya.
To finish i'm intrigue with BMC,strong squad they have up there,i thought that Samu was going to be the leader but seeing the names they brought not so sure anymore. |

Valverde and Contador dancing away on the pedals distancing everyone else, with Kwiakowski trying to bridge the gap the duo have made. With 8 kilometres remaining.

Daylight between Valverde and Contador, With the group behind with four BMC riders and other favourites chasing behind to catch them both. Contador summits the climb first with a roughly 15" gap to Valverde.

Quick time check from Contador back to Valverde and the timecheck is over 36" with under 6 kilometres of the stage remaining. No time check back to the third group, but unless they are close to catching Valverde they should be at least 10" further behind.

With under two kilometres of the stage remaining Alberto Contador has a gap of at least 30" back to Valverde. No sign of the third group catching Valverde on the road yet.

They we're 20 seconds behind Valverde at the top of the climb. Might be a gap over a minute at the end of today. |

I just got reminded the hard way that I actually hate too many riders to survive stage racing season...

Victory and the race jersey for Alberto Contador, with a 13" second gap back to Alejandro Valverde in the end.
