As a spin-off of the Other Races thread, we decided that we needed a thread specifically for U23 races, particlarly with Avenir and the U23 WC coming up.
So here is the parcours for Tour de l'Avenir:

And here is the summary from Alakagom of some of the interesting riders in l'Avenir:

 France brings Alaphilippe ( goes to OPQS next year ). For the U23 ranks he's a solid punchy guy with solid kick. 8th in Tour de l'Ain sprint stage few days ago.

They also have two favoruites for the opening prologue. Flakemore and Howson ( goes to OGE next year ). Can't split them really, but my bet is Howson to win the prologue.
 Konrad should lead the Austrian team. He'll hope to improve from his 9th place in GC last year.
From the mixed African team, a big talent, Merhawi Kudus ( only 19, from 1994!!!!!). He already finished 17th in Tour de l'Ain few fays ago!! He could well deliver a massive win for African cycling here.
 has Michael Valgren ( Saxo next year), Lasse Normann Hansen ( Garmin next year ) , Magnus Cort Nielsen ( 2 impressive stage wins in Tour of Denmark ). They all are solid riders and should take some results, and they are riders that could well do very well in Avenir.
 Simon Yates ( Avenir stage winner 2011 ) will lead GB in the sprints. He also will have a very good leadout if it comes to full on sprint.
 Cannondale bound Davide Formolo will lead Italian GC aspirations. 2nd at Giro Valle d'Aosta Mont Blanc this year behind Villela, so definitely has talent to do very well.
 Dylan Van Baarle will be hoping to do well in prologue and is good enough to steal a win on the flat stages, from late attack most likely. Van Der Lijke also gives them options on the punchier stages.
Other intresting names are  Toms Skujins, he got plenty of results this year.  Luka Pibernik and Matej Mohoric are two big Slovenian talents alongside Polanc and will hope to deliver as well.
In other words, should be a great race this year.

Not to forget an earlier summary of the initial startlist:
Germany has Dieteren and Zabel for the sprints, Sutterlin for the prologue. Herklotz for the remaining stages, would be bit surprised if he didn't come away without a stage win.
Belgium has De Bie, and as well Jasper Stuyven who should dominate the sprints, shown good form at Utah as well!

The route looks really exciting. I expect Parra Bustamente to win atleast one of those MTF's

I'm interested in what Teuns can do in the GC. He was 3rd at the Ronde de l'Isard and was inside the top 10 of every stage. A good result here could net him a spot in one of the Belgian Pro Continental teams next year and then possibly on his way to the WT. Juan Ernesto Chamorro won that race and could be a good tip for the overall but he hasn't really done a lot else this season.

Yes, that could be.
But maybe Parra will have the 'Froome' role at Chamorro, just helping him getting the win. Chamorro is a little better to me, though, and I think also the overall favourite this year.
Also, I tip Kudus to be the surprise for the GC, he did good this season, e.g 2nd in Vuelta Castilla a Léon, but hasn't really made it to the spotlights I think. Not sure how strong his team is though.

I guess there's no point in giving my opinion on GC favourites... 
Seriously, interesting to see some new names (for me) that are apparently pretty promising like Chevrier, Vervaeke or Kudus besides the more obvious names Konrad, Chamorro, Formolo or Foliforov.

(the order is mostly based on the order of teams in the PCS startlist and doesn't reflect differences in strenght)

Hmm... Van der Lijke is more of a puncheur with just a impressive finishing sprint. But not really hilly stages here, so it's fine to list him as a sprinter. You might want to include Teunissen though, he is in great-form(look at his Tour de Fjords results). Though on the other hand, he seems to do better on very tough stages as well. Hard to say whether he's a sprinter or puncheur again. A bit in between I guess Meh, dumb stage profiles, Y U NO include hilly stages?!

Stage 1 looks quite well suited to the sort of hard man with a sprint. I'd be thinking about someone like Stuyven there so those guys are definitely in with a chance as well.
EDIT: And yes, thanks cio, that list will be useful as the race progresses.

Hmm, stage 1 still looks a bit too flat to me, though I don't know how steep that hill 20km from the end is.
I put my money on stage 3.
Is Tour de L'Avenir actually broadcasted somewhere?
Edit: Oh well, Stage 1 looks waay more interesting on the first post than the PCS profiles. I might swallow my words again
2nd edit: Well, it seems that the PCS profiles aren't accurate then, since more profiles are different. Okay.

Thanks guys, I hope that list is slightly useful for guys not familiar with U23 racing as well so they might be able to judge who over- or underperforms.
Stages 1 and 5 are for Herklotz anyway, attack over the top and descent faster than lightning

Küng isn't a climber. When he won that Italian U23 race he was in the breakaway and thus got to the finish together with Herklotz.
Is Eisenhart starting for the USA? Seems to be a good climber/TTer.

The USA is the only team that haven't announced their startlist I think.
Though if they do, it'd be nice if Craddock & Mannion participate, big contenders(especially Craddock) if they would.
I'm not too impressed by Eisenhart's climbing(results) though, he looks more like a TTist with a decent climbing ability.
Edit: Oh, Craddock is in USAPCC it seems.
