Last year's race may as well been called Ricco's revenge as the cobra managed to take some vengence from non-Worlds selection (and how often must we mention that!) to take a fine late break win.
This style seems to be the fashion in a race ultimately decided on the tough climbing sections in the final 10% of the race. It is your typical style of race that we see in many stages of the Giro D'Italia, slowly ramping up to a definative crescendo.
Every year one strong rider has got away, let's have a look at the class of 2012.

It's not the strongest startlist for a hilly classic, but does contain Cesare Di Maggio, who must be the big home favourite here. Of course Jonathan Bellis has had a highly successful season, though not always consistent in the classics. There could be some rivalry between them and the dastardly Jayco Red Bull who will no doubt be looking to get one of their super domestiques up the road or one of their trademark multiple point grabs. Certainly both teams could make up late ground on Bianchi who look thin on the ground in comparison to their usual high quality riders.
Belgium had a mixed world championships and that could describe BPost's year, great in places but faded at the climax. Vanendert and Gautier are good enough to win this at their best.
Rui Costa has been the once shining light at times for his lowly placed CSC squad. If this comes down to a small bunch kick he could rival Bellis.
Aleksandar Flügel is on a hefty win bonus you'd imagine for his promotion chasing team. It's the usual one man band from them - what tune will he play?
Plenty of home interest also in Pirelli, Ferrari and Vespa though all three have left their superstars to rest for the Giro Dell Emillia in a couple of days time.

I'm hoping that Nationality bonus is massive for Proni and really, really, really small for all the other Italians |

I hope Costa goes under the radar again on a late attack and steals the victory like he did at Strade Bianche.

I hope Quinziato or Traficante are Vespa's designated men for the break. |

Powerful break + VW to do the chasing was only going to mean one thing. Great that Dowsett made it into the break, but a wasted opportunity given how it played out.
Would have been better to see a race between the favourites, but thats PCM11 for you

A typical PCM11 scenario, where it`s sometimes more worth to have a mediocre team than a real favourite.
Really should have been into this race then with Hesjedal, Passeron or Ruijgh as "leader".

It's always a bit ridiculous this race...I'd be happy enough not getting in the break if we chased it.
Good job with the report though Smowz. |

I really shouldn't be disappointed with a sixth place, but it's always annoying to see your rider lose all chances on a win by having to lead out the sprint. It's really something that I'd like Cyanide to fix. Either that they wait longer before the kick off or that it's possible to hold on from the front.
Anyway, a good result. A nice report as well.

This is fantastic, what a stunning performance by Ianetti who like Santa secures another huge win for the team!!!
- First great win on homesoil, it's fantastic that the team like last year seemingly likes to finish the season strongly!
Great report smowz, really entertaining

Target is clear, I'll have to beat Emu and hold all the other teams behind me to manage my top 10 goal, though it will be incredible hard, despite Ianettis win in Milano!
