[NBA2k] Grizzlies - 1998/99 Preview
tsmoha
img51.imageshack.us/img51/1757/grizzheader.png

Just as Teddy the Creator a few weeks /months ago, I've decided to start a NBA 2k12-story here. And just as Teddy said, I know there may be better places to do so, but some people here may be interested in some basketball action though Wink I will go for a classic career: starting from 1997-98.. with one of the worst (if not worst) team in NBA history: the Vancouver Grizzlies. Some of you may remember such great players like Shareef Abdur-Rahim or Bryant "Big Country" Reeves. I will give some updates on this career every month, hope you enjoy.. a season preview will be up soon.

Game: NBA 2k12 (PC)
Difficulty: Superstar
Roster: 97-98 Mod
Quarter Lenght: 12 Mins

Nice to see you back with a story tsmoha! And even greater with one from NBA2K

I don't remember the 98 Grizlies team but Abdur-Rahim is ofc a good player!

Good luck! Grin

Best team in the history of the NBA, imo Pfft

I'd love to see a game between Vancouver Grizzlies and the mighty Charlotte Bobcats. Wonder which team will win.

I'll probably follow, even though i didn't follow the NBA until last year and therefor don't know any of your players. But they sound like they are at a level as an average player of the Wizards.

Actually, you may see some pics of Grizzlies against Bobcats: In 1997 there were only 29 teams, but now it's 30. In NBA 2k12 you can't play a career with only 29 teams, so the modders left the Bobcats in. Both teams will fight for the best draft pick Wink You may not know the Grizzlies players, but we will face such great names like Jordan, Iverson, Ewing, Karl Malone and many more..

@valverde321: I totally agree Smile

@Spilak23: Thanks for following! I will post the team's roster soon and keep it updated during the season, you may remember some names. There's not so many well-known players in Grizzlies' roster though Wink

Riis123
There were definetely some great players of that era, indcluding my favourite Allan Iverson who originally drew my attention to basket. What a great player, even though he was extremely selfish and played at a bad team.

I will follow, but I'm rooting for my hometown team.

@Riis123: Iverson definitely had a great impact on this sport, so he deserves to be called a great player imo Wink I will put some infos on those famous players from time to time.

@Mresuperstar: You can root for the Pistons, it's a team that I like Wink

Before the season starts, the Grizzlies announced the first trade: guard Bobby Hurley is traded to the Houston Rockets for rookie guard Rodrick Rhodes (24 years old, Houston first pick (24th overall) in 1997's NBA draft). Rhodes isn't expected to get that much minutes within Grizzlies' rotation, but the team's hoping for him to develop well.

First post updated: Vancouver's current roster (I will update this roster whenever a trade/signing happened)

The Grizzlies face a tough season after finishing with a 14-68 record in 1996-97. There's a good chance to improve, but will they reach 17 wins? They won a total of 29 games in their first two years in the NBA, and if they fail to win 17 this year, they'll break the league record, set by the Mavericks of 1991-92, '92-93 and '93-94, for fewest wins in a three-year period. Is there any reason to hope? Well...

...they do have Shareef Abdur-Rahim, a 6'10" small forward who is coming off a terrific rookie season (18.7 points per game). Someday it may be agreed upon that he, not Allen Iverson, should have been the No. 1 pick in the 1996 draft, because Abdur-Rahim has a chance to develop into another Scottie Pippen. Seven-foot center Bryant Reeves can score (16.2 points a game last season), but he's not a prime option offensively... the Grizzlies also got rookie point guard Antonio Daniels (4th pick overall), who should have some positive effect on the struggling offense (second to last scoring - 89.2 ppg - last year).. here's the starting lineup:

Spilak23
I think it will be great to see Abdur-Rahim challenge all the other top players from the 1996 draft. I hope he can compete with young Iverson, Starbury, Nash, Bryant and Allen!

tsmoha
@Spilak: Thanks, mate. I guess Kobe may be out of reach for Shareef Wink but it's definitely a tough and interesting challenge to compete with those guys.

November Part #1: Vancouver Grizzlies vs Toronto Raptors

Loss, 75-93

One of the Grizzlies' highlight games in November as they face the 2nd Canadian team. Vancouver has only one win so far this season (against the new built Bobcats).. the team looked good in first half, building a narrow lead. But in second half, the Grizzlies (again) began to struggle in both scoring and defense and they were 21-31 in 3rd and 16-27 in 4th quarter.. Man of the match was Raptors' Tracy McGrady (15 pts, 7 Reb), his teammates Chauncey Billups (15 pts, 6 Assists) and Gary Trent (18 Pts, 12 Reb) had good games, too. Grizzlies' Abdur-Rahim had 18 pts, 10 Reb and Antonio Daniels had 8 pts and 9 Assists, but also turned the ball over 7 times..

img827.imageshack.us/img827/3852/vantor1.jpg
One of the new faces in Vancouver: Rodrick Rhodes had 7 points in 1st quarter, when the Grizzlies' had a great start.. he couldn't add some more points later..

img138.imageshack.us/img138/5375/vantor2.jpg
Vancouver also added 5 time NBA All-star Brad Daugherty (Center, 32 years) to their roster. Cleveland's 1st overall pick in 1986 did retire in 1996 because of back problems, but decided to come back from retirement.. he had 7 points in 13 minutes against the Raptors and looked like a good backup for struggling starting center Bryant Reeves.

img811.imageshack.us/img811/7734/vantor3.jpg
Raptors' rookie guard McGrady had a strong second half and helped the Raptors beating Vancouver by almost 20 points..

@Mresuperstar: Yes, he did Sad But I've seen better performances (against us) in this first month of the season Wink As you can see here:

Novemeber 1997 - Results

img855.imageshack.us/img855/277/979811sum.jpg

A bad start into this season for the Grizzlies.. only two wins against the Charlotte Bobcats and several blow-out-losses even against struggling teams like the Pistions (3-12). There's a lot of things to improve in Vancouver, that's for sure.

November Part #2: Some impressions..

img703.imageshack.us/img703/9857/9798111.jpg
A huge loss against the strong Jazz. An impressive run in 3rd quarter (30-18) gave the Jazz the crucial lead and the Grizzlies had no chance to fight back. Karl Malone (26 pts, 11 Reb) and Jeff Hornacek (24 pts, picture) were Utah's strongest, while Abdur-Rahim had 20 pts and Bryant Reeves a double-double (11 pts/11 Reb).

img221.imageshack.us/img221/2681/9798112.jpg
The Grizzlies' worst match so far came against the Lakers: 68-100. Abdur-Rahim scored 29 pts, but the Lakers were simply too strong. Kobe Bryant (24 points), Shaq O'Neal (21 Pts, 10 Reb, 6 Assists), Eddie Jones (20 pts, picture) and Robert Horry (14 Reb) all had huge games here.

img29.imageshack.us/img29/2761/9798113.jpg
Bryant Reeves dominated the Bobcats in Vancouver's 2nd win this season: 30 points and 10 Rebounds. The Grizzlies had a comfortable lead in early 4th quarter, when they suddenly stopped scoring and went 18-28 in this final 12 minutes. But Reeves made two free throws 20 seconds before final whistle.. Abdur-Rahim added 19 pts and Sam Mack (9 pts) was 3-6 from outside.

Not the best start but atleast you beat the Bobcats twice! How are Abdur Rahim and Reeves averages so far? Cause they played some very good games Wink

Well if you can't turn it around soon you are better off tanking games for a good draft pick next year Wink

tsmoha
Thanks for the feedback, guys!

@beagle: Unfortunately there's both Bobcats AND Hornets in the game. In 1997/98 there were only 29 teams, now it's 30. And you can't remove a team for Association/career-mode, so the modders had to leave the Bobcats in.

@dave92: Thanks! I hope it will be fun Smile

@Spilak23: I will post the player stats soon. I'm also thinking of keeping the first post updated in case of those stats.

@Mresuperstar: Of course we're expecting some good draft picks in first (and maybe second) season Wink But I still want to win some games Smile

Avin Wargunnson
Not a good start but you should anyway concentrate on building a new dynasty, it will be very interesting in the off season, but before that i hope for some great matches for Grizzlies.
Will you have real draft class or fictional (i see some great players like Vince,Dirk and Pierce coming in 1998) Smile
I'll be back

tsmoha
@Avin W: The off-season will be more interesting than the regular season, yes. At least for the Grizzlies Wink And I will have real draft classes (I do have the classes from 1998 to 2002 at least), so there will be this pretty good class with Pierce, Dirk and Vince next year Smile
