Well after the facebook voting that the Giro implemented fo the 2012 route, the following two mountains came out on top as the fan favourites - Mortirolo and Stelvio. The organisation has said they will attempt to include both next year.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with that votings, as some great climbs were eliminated in favor of clearly worse climbs which are more famous/fresher in people's minds.

Also, I read elsewhere that they want to include the Stelvio for the next year (it was prior to the end of the voting, btw) and that it's not going to be in a MTT.

The Mortirolo and Stevlio are indeed set to be in the race.

And according to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, the Giro is set for the highest ever Grand Tour summit finish at 2832 metres on the Stelvio on the race's penultimate stage.

I think that map makes for a longer stage than the one on that profile.

Made it in Bikeroutetoaster and got this profile:

It does seem a bit unlikely, considering the length the stage would be!

The Mortirolo is there:

It's the second to last climb, although it looks like a hill next to the Stelvio. The last climb before Stelvio is a profile error, there should be a false flat there.

They're not climbing the Mortirolo to the top, though. Although that stage will never happen anyway. It's too good to be true.

So it's been shortened. Understandable. Still a potentially awesome stage, can't wait to know the full route of the Giro.

I thought I saw the worst in 2011 but RCS continues to dig the hole of stupidity. This stage is rubbish. The Mortirolo programmed is a new way with 18% sections and a gravel section. With 25km of valley and the giant Stelvio behind, it's likely that nothing happens in it. Frown

I've read elsewhere that there would be five other summit finishes and they are quiet isolated. This route is the same kind than the last one. I personnaly think that the spirit of Giro is dead. This race is for the Giro what a zombie is for a human : a scary and stupid thing and finally a very sad way to end.

RIP Sad

Actually the new Giro director Michele Acquarone said that the 2012 Giro will have easier profiles and better transfers. With this stage already announced I am looking forward to the official presentation to see the "easier" profiles.

In general he said that the 2010 Giro was perfectly balanced while the 2011 Giro wasn`t.

Yeah, I know and that's why I'm really schocked by these news.

For me, 2011 Giro was a really bad edition and it's not explained by the domination of Contador. The only memorable stage was in Val di Fassa, the only real mountain stage. For 2012, RCS isn't taught a lesson.

At the opposite, I follow on a daily basis the rumors for next Tour and it seems to be less high-mountainy with more middle mountain stages. If some stages are badly made, the route is definitely better than the one of that Giro.
