Le Tour de France 2011
Stage 9: Issoire > Saint Flour 208km
Stage Info (from cyclingnews.com)
The final stage before the first rest day fulfils Prudhomme's desire for unpredictability. That the last winner in Saint-Flour was Richard Virenque back in 2004 says a good deal about what the riders are up against today. There's very little riding on the flat, just frequently steep ups and downs. At almost 1600m, the Pas de Peyrol is the highest road pass in the Massif Central. Following it are the not-insignificant Perthus and Prat de Bouc passes before the road drops irregularly towards Saint-Flour. The finish is uphill too and could well result in a breakaway rider finishing alone.

Will Gesink lose time tomorrow?
I hope not and that he can recover a bit on the rest day. But I fear it's not enough time.

The Cat. 2 climbs do occur in a point of the course where the race pace would not be such that Thor wouldn't be completely out of it and couldn't catch back up. Could be another day for the breakaway, maybe gerrans, that would be nice. |

would love to see that his been trying its bout one pays off but i think the peleton wont give him as much freedom as he can get massive times on stages like this we have seen it before and lance had to work pretty hard to get it back off him |

thats a good point maybe that 4th cat at the end may get him a bit unstuck if the pace is there

This is one of the few remaining Gilbert stages, so OmegaPharma will probably try to control the pack and prevent a break from succeeding.

It's a shame that the last 50km are so flat, it could have been a great stage otherwise. I think Gilbert or breakaway to win, and Hushovd should easily keep the yellow jersey.

Looking at that last climb, the tour website says it's 1.6km @ 6.1% with the last 1000m averaging 7.5% and the last 500m being the steepest > 8%. Maybe there will be a gap. |
