Riders to follow:
***** | Rein Taaramäe | **** | Jose Serpa, David Abal, Florentino Marquez | *** | Manuel Lloret, Bernhard Kohl, Andre Greipel | ** | Przemyslaw Niemiec, Maximiliano Richeze, Yasmani Martinez, Fredrik Kessiakoff, Dmitri Grabovski | * | John-Lee Augustyn, Ruben Bongiorno, Benjamin Noval, Ivan Basso, Yukiya Arashiro |
With Wellington very close to its finish the third .HC race of the season is almost here and this is the first one that favors the real stage races, with 2 high mountain finishes and one individual time - trial. The race is most likely to be decided in the second, third, fourth and fifth stage, with the first one and the last 2 being made for sprinters.
Rein Taaramae, who won the race last year, is back to defend his title, this time looking even stronger than last year. From last year's top 10 only Ivan Basso is again riding here, but he will most likely be just a helper for Jose Serpa, who seems to be Taaramae's biggest opponent. Serpa looks stronger in the mountains but he will definitely lose some time to Taaramae in the time - trial.
For the mountains, there are a few other strong climbers such as Bernhard Kohl, Florentino Marquez and Magno Nazaret, while David Abal, Manuel Lloret and Przemyslaw Niemiec seem to have a great combination of climbing and time - trialing skills that should get them a high place in the GC.
Andre Greipel seems to be the strongest sprinter here, but Max Richeze and Ruben Bongiorno are on the home group and they could have a higher motivation than the German sprinter, with Bongiorno also counting on a strong support from Mirko Lorenzetto. The winner of the previous .HC race in Down Under, Yukiya Arashiro is also here and he will be looking for a stage win in the sprints as well.

Now it's finally time for Pirelli-Inter to shine and anything less than a top 5 overall GC for Serpa would be a failure...

I really hope my team rides for Kessiakoff and not Noval :-p He's here as a luxury helper (together with Pfannberger) for the mountains! C'mon Kessiakoff, I hope for a top 5, but atleast top 10 should be possible

As far as I'm concerned, a win on the TT with Grabovski and some top 10s by my sprinters should satisfy me. |

This is where I get the first idea about whether I can promote or not.

Should be a really fun race. High class field and a very interesting profile. I am struggling to see Taaramae being beaten here, but several will give it a try!
We have a number of cards to play in the mountains and hills.
Predo:
1) Taaramae
2) Kohl
3) Serpa
4) Abal
5) Marquez
I have a feeling the mountains will be more decisive that the hilly and TT stage. |

Just you wait, Kessiakoff will pwn the field on the hilly stage! Then just cruise with the others in the mountains, and overperform in the Time Trial! We got the plan ready!
Atleast my team should be able to help him if he falls off in the mountains

I also included sprinters and the main favorite for the TT there not only GC riders. That's why Raisin isn't there

Decent performance by Serpa, but I'm not happy that he didn't attack earlier so he could had ended with the stage win. A top 5 in the overall GC seems to be possible now, but I don't think he kan end as the winner of the tour now!
Edit: After the timetrial does things look much brighter for a overall win for Serpa...He didn't lose too much time to the strongest timetrialers and if he can stay with the others in stage 4, then I believe he can win the race at the final mountain stage!

Not a bad little start for Red Bull, a decent effort in stage 1 sprint. Though more will be expected in the last two stages for Arashiro it is nice too see a sprint train attempted.
Augustyn is climbing well, though the rest of the team really struggled over the Mirador.
I would like to see them on the attack in the coming days. Certainly the hilly stage 4 will be very interesting indeed. |

Not exactly the start I was looking for, but at least Raisin has a chance at a top 10. |

2 in top 20 atleast, but why the hell didn't Noval ride for Kessiakoff? Fredrik is better in the mountains (generally), better in hills and better on TT...
I still hope for a top 5, maybe I can dream about 2 riders in top 10 if Noval can hang on in the hilly stage.
Planned tactics for the last mountain stage: Pfannberger attack early, build up a lead. Then at the start of the last climb Noval attacks. Then later Kessiakoff attacks and gets help from the 2 others up the mountain... No way my team will do that :-p

Slightly better performance from my riders on this stage, though why one of them doesn't at least try and join breakaway I do not know!
Really close battle up front between Serpa (surprisingly good on this one) and Taaramae. Surely between those two now.
I fancy Kohl for this next stage - quite a long one so Serpa will look to Yellow jersey to inspire. |
