Seriously, how was I supposed to respond to that?
I mean I've been out here in California "training" for 3 days and
now Travis decides he wants to have a casual conversation about life.

Lost for words I grabbed the rest of my burger and shoved it in my mouth.
At the exact same time our waitress returned to our table to hand us our bill.
I looked like an ignorant buffoon that forget how to eat properly.



If that wasn't embarrassing enough Travis drove home the dagger,
"Come on son... can you stop drooling over her breasts?"

I don't know what happened but Travis had hit a fuse inside of me.
I stormed out of the restaurant. I was sick of it, sick of this.

"Come on Joseph, it was just a joke. Let's talk. Where are you walking to?
You're only going to get yourself lost. Just get in the car, let's talk this out."
Why is he always right? Although, I wasn't going to go down without a fight.

I turned around and unleashed the frustration that was building up inside me.
"You dragged me out here, torture me in 'training', and then humiliate me.
This is pointless, I should have never listened to you. I want to go home."

The phone was ringing.
My alarm clock showed 10:04 AM.
I rolled out of bed and reached for the phone.

"Henry Vergnaud."
No one answered back.
"Thibault, son, is that you?"

"Dad?"



We never needed many words to understand each other.
He had to find his way in this world. No matter how much that scared me,
I understood this was what he had to do. Thibault Vergnaud, my only son...

My own flesh and blood. My pride and joy.
He had the eyes of his mother. The persistence of his dad.
Yet, a will that was all his own. Thibault Vergnaud was our son.

"Joseph, I get it. These past few days weren't what you were expecting.
I know you don't trust me and it's going to take a while for me to earn it.
But, the only way for me to do that is if you allow me to be your father."

turned around with his
arms folded over.

"I want some say in this too.
This isn't all about you reliving
your glory days once again."

What did that even mean?
I'm just trying to train him.

If that's what was going to get
him to stop walking and get into
the car then I had no choice
but to agree with him.

"Sure, but you have to at least
give me a chance to be
your father."

Joseph paused for a moment.
Seconds later he was in the car
sitting next to me once again.

"I want to compete in a race."

He wasn't ready.
But if I was going to make
this work then I had
to compromise.

If I had learned anything it's that Joseph is holding all the cards at the moment.
But, that doesn't mean I have lost all my influence over him. I'm still his father.

"Okay, and I want to know more about my son. We got a deal?"
