Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda
2nd - 4th September 2013

www.settimanaciclisticalombarda.it/immagini/immagine_principale.jpg

Only 2 more months left of the season, and an action packed end to the season kicks off in Italy.

With a hilly / mountainous parcourse ahead for the team, we have selected a team that can aim for a high GC finish. Villella will lead the team, and will be supported by Di Gregorio, Dan Fleeman and St-Pierre.

Damien Howson and Trent Lowe will work as domestiques, whilst Ludvigsson and Simon Yates will work in a free role.

Sponsor Goal: Stage Win(s)

Race Review

Stage 1 (Brembate di Sopra-Valorta -- 168.4km): Joaquim Rodriguez (KAT) took the victory on stage 1, outsprinting Chris Froome (SKY) and Matteo Rabottini (VIN) in the uphill finish. David Villella was our best finisher in 11th. It was almost a day for Fredrik, who held off the peleton until 2km to go.

Stage 2 (Boltiere-Foppolo -- 153.3km): Stage 2 and again it was Rodriguez vs Froome on the Italian slopes. Froome came out on top this time, as no other teams could come close to them. Davide was again our best finisher in 14th.

Stage 3 (Gorle Seriate-Bergamo -- 159.1km: The final stage suited David, and we looked to try something on the final climb before the finish. As planned, Davide attacked, taking a large group of favourites with him. It was going to plan for Top 10 finish on GC, before Kessiakoff (AST) had other ideas. He attacked to take the stage win, and the bonus seconds pushed Villella down to 11th.

GP de Fourmies
8th September 2013

images.populus.ch/pixdir/fr//france-velo/fourmies.jpg

The GP de Fourmies is our only French race in September, and with a very flat route, we will look to finalise our train before the Monviso-Venezia and Tour of Britain.

Caleb Ewan is back from injury and will be the main man in the sprints as he builds up the miles in his legs again. His trusted sidekick Phil Lavery will be his final lead out man, with Dan Lloyd, Quaade and Damien Monier completing the full train.

Adam Yates finalises his build up ahead of the Tour of Britain, and will just ride at his own pace to the finish. Brother Simon and our Canadian youngster St-Pierre complete the squad.

The Vuelta a Espana has reached the second rest day, and it is safe to say the riders are happy to see its arrival.

It was hard week in the saddle, with some exciting racing for the viewing public.

Mickael Delage (FDJ) leads the KoM standings, whilst Kreuziger extended his lead in the Points Classification. Van Garderen comfortably sits at the top of the Under 25 standings, with Kelderman his 'closest' rival, over 9 minutes behind him.

One stage race in Italy, and one in Britain is all that remains before the World Championships. For some riders, they are just here to fill the gaps in a roster after a long season, but others are here to finalise their Worlds Preparation.

Rapha-Bianchi come to the race as a mixture of both. Davide Villella will lead the team, with the GC and the Summit finish on Stage 4 in his sights. He will be supported by Remy Di Gregorio, Trent Lowe and Fredrik Ludvigsson.

Rene Mandri will be the team's sprinter, with a lead out team consisting of Jonny Bellis, Damien Howson and Damien Monier.

Race Report

Stage 1 (Paesana-Laigueglia --158.4km): Roberto Ferrari (LAM) won Stage 1 into Laigueglia, taking victory in the bunch sprint ahead of Bozic (AST) and Mandri. Lowe spent the whole day in the break, picking up all the KoM points on offer.

Stage 2 (Laono-Vigevano -- 182.5km): Elia Viviani showed what Cannondale will be missing next season, comfortably taking the win on Stage 2. The young Italian, set to join Belkin next season, made it look easy ahead of Bozic and Farrar (GRS). Rene could only finish in 8th, as Trent extended his KoM lead.

Stage 3 (Lonate Pozzolo-Salsomaggoire Terme -- 197.5km): One of the longest stages, and it turned out to be one for the break. Andrea Manfredi (FLA) took the win, ahead of Murgerli (ADR) and Popkov (ISD). Rene won the bunch sprint of the peleton, finishing 7th.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0010_zpsdaa3697d.jpg

Spilak soloed to victory on the Queen Stage to seal the GC win.

Stage 4 (Noceto-San Valentino di Brentonico -- 169.4km): Simon Spilak (KAT) soloed to the victory on stage 4, with only Bauke Mollema (BEL) being able to follow as the initial attacks went. Rui Costa (MOV) completed the podium, as Davide struggled to make an impact, as he found himself isolated. He would be our best finisher in 22nd.

Stage 5 (Rovereto-Montecchio Maggiore -- 167.4km): Matteo Fedi (FLA) made sure that the breakaway would steal another victory, as his late attack was enough to give him the win. Fellow escapee Andrey Kashechkin (AST) finished 2nd, with Simon Spilak sealing the GC win taking 3rd. Lowe remained from the day's break, finishing 10th. A late attack from Villella handed him the opportunity to finish inside the Top 20 on GC, whilst Trent's victory in the KoM Classification was a small consolation.

World Championships Team GB Squads Announced

With one week to go until the World Championships in Tuscany, Team GB have announced the squads that will look to back home with a medal.

Peter Kennaugh looks set to lead the Road Race squad, with Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome being a good hope a medal in the Time Trial.

Whilst for some, the choices available made the final selection easy, it will be heartbreak for Simon Yates and Adam Blythe who be the ones that miss out.

Looks like Kreuziger gets the chance in a GT without Alberto to be a teammate for. And it immediately works out.

Of course Villella ins't a real climber so the GCs of those races where a bit to difficult, but a stage win could have been possible.

@andy: Vuelta wrap up to follow soon Wink As for Villella, it was a 2x hilly stage and 1x mountain stage. With his stats, (71MO 73HI) I thought that he could have done better. He is young, it's been a long season, so I can't complain too much

The Vuelta a Espana is over, and what a race it turned out to be. The final week would be a battle between Kreuziger and Martin, with the rest of the peleton taking front row seats. Kreuziger is all but certain to walk away with the Points jersey, whilst Tejay van Garderen has sown up the Under 25 Classification and just needs ride to finish.

The KoM jersey is still on offer to any rider who still has it in the legs, so could play its part as the race concludes in Madrid.
