Le Flèche Wallone
April 18th, 2014
Charleroi – Huy: 197.4 kms - Hilly
The second of the Ardennes races is far less up and down than Amstel Gold, but includes Mur de Huy three times which will be able to shatter the race on its own. Expect the finish at the top to go to whoever is the best on this climb.
A rather large breakaway gets out early and looms over the entire race as the peloton is forced to work abnormally hard for most of the race to ensure it stays in check. Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) also poses a serious threat to the race favorites from this group.
The field brings that group back, only to see an equally big and dangerous group form again, this time having a major threat from Roman Kreuziger (Saxo) in its midst.
Due to the high pace of the peloton for most of the race, major attacks are few and far between, but in the last parts of the race, they became more frequent, with this one coming from Belgian Champion, Jurgen Van den Broeck (Lotto).
With the race pulled back together for the first time since the start, World Champion, Simon Gerrans (Orica), make an attack just before the final climb of Mur de Huy. He is quickly marked and not able to get loose.
Rui Costa of Movistar makes the first attack on Mur de Huy hoping to earn his victory as other riders are struggling to with the leaders of the group.
Philippe Gilbert was simply being patient again though, waiting for the others to burn out, before making his move and destroying those left around him. He rides right by Costa as others try to stay on his wheel.
Getting the double Gilbert takes another win. Only Liège-Bastogne-Liège now stands between him and his second treble on his career. And he gets revenge for his 2nd place finish here last year in an epic race .

Okay so everything is back up to date, the schedule on page 1 has all of the race links and winners. Also for those reading, click the link about Gilbert's victory in LFW to see last years race, an epic one that is worth the read (or re-read).

Liège - Bastogne - Liège
April 22nd, 2014
Pre-Race Guide
The long arduous journey and last monument of the early season classics. Liège - Bastogne - Liège is the culmination of the Ardennes classics and though it doesn't have any legandary climbs like the Cauberg or Mur de Huy to tackle multiple times, the race frequently sees its selections on La Redoute and victory comes from the finish and steep climb of Côte de Saint-Nicholas.

Team Goals
Getting a second treble for Gilbert has to be our only goal here. Though should something happen he certainly is not our only option as Cadel Evans also could be capable of a great result on his own. Look for us to stick to our standard tactic of being patient with a rider out in the breakaway. Though with more team power in this race than the last two, we might have the leeway to put in an attack from distance.

Okay, so I'm getting ready to start L-B-L. I'm trying to serve two purposes with this one race, first to continue my career here, but also to demonstrate what a MG race report from me might look like. I've adjusted the preview to have a broader depth of all teams. However I'd normally give more reporting on those race favorites instead of BMC team goals.
One of the things do want to do is stream all the races I would do as a reporter. Giving extra depth that you could watch the race unfold, and with luck I'll be able to record the race, so anyone could go back and watch the race if they choose.

Liège – Bastogne – Liège
April 22nd, 2014
Liège – Liège: 258.7 kms - Hilly
The route from Liège and back completes the Ardennes classics, and race favorite Philippe Gilbert will be looking for the win to complete the second treble of his career. He is also the defending champion here as well, but others will be looking to dethrone him including Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha) who is in great form winning Pais Vasco a couple of weeks ago and coming off of a 3rd at AGR and 6th at LFW. Also looking to claim victory will be Enrico Gasparatto (Astana), Jelle Vanendert (Lotto) and Peter Sagan (Cannondale) who have all finished top 5 in both Amstel Gold and Le Flèche Wallonne.
The race starts with an early attack from Andrey Amador (BMC) others followed by Kevin Denis (Jean Delatour), Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel), Kevin Seeldraeyers (Astana), Sven Renders (Willems), and Preben Van Hecke (Topsport) as they try and get clear of the field for the break of the day.
The attack ends quickly though as the peloton moves swiftly behind Blanco's Luis Leon Sánchez and Martin Tjallingii. The field seems to want to keep any breakaway limited.
A new move takes place led by Nicki Sørensen (Saxo) and Sébastien Rosseler (Garmin). Others trying to stay with the move are Preben Van Hecke (Topsport), Dimitry Kozontchuk (Katusha) and Manuel Quinziato (BMC).
That group gets caught, but finally a breakaway that can be called the break of the day which includes Rafal Majka (Saxo), Imanol Erviti (Movistar), Dimitry Kozontchuk (Katusha), Steve Morabito (BMC), Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel) and Florent Barle (Cofidis).
Just short of the halfway point, Astana's Egor Silin is at the front of the peloton which has yielded just short of seven and a half minutes to the breakaway.
The climb of Côte de Saint-Roch only 128km into the race has splintered the peloton as riders struggled with gaps on the narrow roads. Teams are scrambling to get riders back into good positions.
BMC's Philippe Gilbert and Greg Van Avermaet have to push as they are caught behind the lead group and work to get back in the lead bunch.
A third group back contains Lotto's Jelle Vanendert and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) as well as World Champion Simon Gerrans of Orica.
Group number four is driven by Katusha and in fact does contain Joaquím Rodríguez. Also in the group is Chris Froome (Sky) and Peter Sagan (Cannondale).
CRASH!
Adding to the issues on the climb, it seems BMC's Cadel Evans in the Australian Champions jersey crashed on the descent and perhaps also helped cause the gaps. He looks to be joining the 5th group on the road behind the main bunch. Damino Cunego of Lampre, and Ryder Hesjedal of Blanco are also included in this group.
Astana still leads on the front, but the field has been able to come back together as the key riders creep further forward to avoid making the same mistake again. The breakaway has seen its lead reduced to only 5 minutes.
Head up Côte de la Vecquée the thinning peloton led by Belgian Champion Jurgen Van den Broeck (Lotto) has finally caught sight of the breakaway, six riders now certainly doomed as the field continues to charge on.
The first of the big names attacks! It's Jelle Vanendert of Lotto as he climbs by the last of the now fully consumed breakaway. No one seems to give serious chase as he pulls away and gives a last look behind.
....... So lesson learned here, apparently if you take too much time looking at a saved replay, it will advance to the next race. Didn't know that. Learning curve. I could have saved the replay again, but didn't think it was needed as this replay was already saved. However I was wrong. This is really sad because this was a great race.
To conclude, there was a bunch sprint of seven riders, won by Ryder Hesjedal (Blanco). Second was taken by Maxim Iglinsky (Astana) and third was Philippe Gilbert (BMC).

Tour de Romandie
April 24th - 29th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide
The Swiss stage race with importance not unlike the Dauphine or Tour de Suisse in its purpose of being the final preparation for the upcoming Giro d'Italia. These short 6 days should give a strong indication of which riders are contenders for the Giro, and likewise expect the startlists to be similar as well. The tour itself this year is unique in featuring two time-trials, the first and last stages. An opening 3.5km prologue and a closing 20km TT around Lausanne. In between there is a day for the punchers and a day for the sprinters, before two mountain top finishes that along with the Lausanne ITT will decided the overall outcome of the race.
BMC Startlist
Leader: Cadel Evans Sprinter: Daniel Oss Free: Matthias Frank Team-mate: Brent Bookwalter Team-mate: Martin Kohler Team-mate: Steve Morabito Team-mate: Marco Pinotti Team-mate: Michael Schär
Team Goals
This is the final tune up for many of our key riders going into the Giro, most notable our GC leader Cadel Evans. Evans showed incredible early season form, and we look for him to continue the display here. Being a Swiss team only adds to the importance of this race for us and so we do expect to aim for a win here. This race is a tremendous precursor as Nibali won last year, and then went on to win the Giro, we would like to do the same with Evans this year.

Tour de Romandie
April 24th, 2014 : Stage 1
Genève: 3.5 kms - Flat (ITT)
Stage one is a very quick, 3.5 kilometer prologue, the route has a very slight uphill grade over most of the course, but not anywhere near enough to give any advantage to the climbers.
Getting an early start on the day is Sky's Bradley Wiggins, who sets both the best time at the intermediate checkpoint (a silly 1.2km into the stage) and at the finish. He will have a good length of time to sit and wait just to see if anyone can top his time.
Unsurprisingly the next person to give a serious scare if Tony Martin (OPQS) who is only back 1 second at the intermediate check, but finishes 5 seconds off the pace of Wiggins.
With several riders out of the way the only real threat to Wiggins time the rest of the day would come from Lampre's Adriano Malori who would equal Wiggins time at the checkpoint, though he wouldn't equal the pace the rest of the way finishing a painful 2 seconds behind Wiggins for 2nd on the day.

Tour de Romandie
April 25th, 2014 : Stage 2
Genève – Val de Travers: 181.5 kms - Hilly
The 5 man breakaway gives a hotly contested sprint for the first KoM points on the day, and a chance at overall leadership of the category.
The first attack comes from Rory Sutherland (Orica) but a determined and powerful Sky squad wasn't letting anyone go off the front, even though there are still two climbs to go in the race.
The next attack comes with much more firepower as Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) launches off the front, some try to go with him including Woet Poels (Vacansoleil), Mikel Nieve (Eustkaltel), Sandy Casar (FDJ), and another try from Rory Sutherland.
After getting just a moments respite from teammate Andrey Kesheskin (Astana), Fuglsang attacks again this time also taking Andy Schleck with him (Saxo).
The pair are caught at the start of the final climb, but Schleck takes off again, he is followed by Elia Favilli (Lampre), Andreas Klöden (RSLT), Johann Tschopp (OPQS) and Javier Moreno (Movistar).
The race concludes though with a small bunch sprint as Lars Petter Nordhaug (Blanco) wins ahead of race leader Bradley Wiggins (Sky) and Cadel Evans.

April 26th, 2014 : Stage 3
Val de Travers – Lucens: 179 kms - Flat
Stage three is the only flat stage of the race, and even that doesn't make sprinter too optimistic with a categorized climb so close to the finish. Though the sprinters with a little bit of punch shouldn't have too much trouble unless a very fast pace is put on at the front.
With no one able to form an early breakaway, KoM points are freely up for grabs as they make the category three climb. The first two to attack and get the points are Martin Kohler and Marcel Ahregger (IAM).
The move would also start the break of the day, as those two would be joined by Svein Tuft (Orica), Daniele Pietropolli (Lampre), and Mauro Da Dalto (Cannondale).
Despite a great effort, the day was not meant for them, however it was meant for Daniel Oss who takes the sprint ahead of Andrew Fenn (OPQS) and Jonathan Castroviejo (Movistar)

April 27th, 2014 : Stage 4
Moudon – Loèche-les-Bains: 153.2 kms - Mountains
The first of a pair of days in what could be the deciding mountains, the route here is mostly flat, though the finish in the city of Loèche-les-Bains concludes a long mountain climb.
The break of the day features several riders within a minute of the race lead, and they seem to all be very enthused about taking a couple in the intermediate sprints. Visconti (Movistar) wins this one ahead of Dekker (Garmin) and Oss.
At the base of the short preliminary climb Andy Schleck (Saxo) launches an attack, Basso (Cannondale) and Tschopp (IAM) are the first to get to his wheel, and the assault would overtake the break of the day.
More sprint points were available, though it was hard to decide who was sprinting for the points and who was attacking to get away! Anthony Charteau (Jean) would take first here though ahead of Oss and Fränk Schleck (RSLT)
The monstrous Sky train though was eating up everything that was able to get off the front quickly though and had it all put back together going into the base of the climb to the finish.
The first attack on the final climb comes from Blanco's Steven Kruijswijk, followed by Anthony Charteau. Though Sky was never letting things get too far away and Radioshack and BMC were also very present at the front.
Andy Schleck puts in another go, but he is marked by his brother, Fränk, and a line of riders including race leader Bradley Wiggins (Sky) follows this move!
Again all attacks seem pointless though as the Sky train continues to gobble up all in their path with still four riders churning at the front.
Alberto Contador (Saxo) takes his shot near the finish! Those trying to stay on his wheel are Simon Spilak (Katusha) and Robert Kiserlovski (RSLT).
In the end though, there was no getting away from the hydra of Sky as Chris Froome takes a win in a rather large bunch sprint. 2nd is Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) and Fränk Schleck takes 3rd.

I have never experienced so real Sky train in PCM
Can't wait until you start the Giro, Evans will surely be one of the favourites to win this

Vuelta Asturias
April 27th - 30th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide
The Vuelta Asturias is a short 4 day stage race, featuring three flat stages, two for sprints and one time trial. The final day is an uphill finish that might be enough to create separation, but expect the time-trial to be key in winning this tour if the rider can finish amongst the lead group on stage four. The two sprint stages, one and two, offer differences in terrain as there are several climbs in stage one that will require some work for the sprinters to manage. Stage two however is generally downhill and flat though perfect conditions for a fast sprint. The time-trial on stage three is generally flat, but has some slight undulation over its 13.8km course. While stage four is easily the most hilly, and features a series of climbs leading to the uphill finish.
BMC Startlist
Leader: Taylor Phinney Free: Andrey Amador Free: Dominik Nerz Team-mate: Gregory Brenes Team-mate: Kenneth Foss Team-mate: Manuel Quinziato Team-mate: Ivan Santaromita Team-mate: Henning Vatne
Team Goals
This race for us is to get some extra days work in before the Giro for the remaining riders that did not join the team in Romandie, starting with Dominik Nerz who will be riding for the first time this year. Others going to the Giro are Phinney, Quinziato, and Santaromita. We would still like to do very well here, and perhaps Phinney can take leadership of the race in the TT and hopefully hold on through the hills, otherwise we look for Amador or Nerz to finish strong for us on the climbs.

It is truly terrifying, knowing you can't attack at all in a race when they do that... Froome was leading with, Henao, Dombrowski, Uran all in line behind him and Wiggins of course still sitting there in Yellow.
I'm a bit mixed about Evans, he is declining now, and his stats have dropped since the start of the year, though he is still strong.

Yea, they are, however they really don't work well together, I haven't seen either one try and help the other our yet in any race, though the pair launching attacks is fairly troubling.
