Race Tactics

The lead for the race will be split between Remy and Davide in the race. Depending on the situation, we could a similar tactic to the one that worked in Murcia, with a two-pronged attack, but we may have to end up waiting for the others to go first.

Either Fredrik or Dan will be the man for the breakaway, taking some pressure of the team's workload during the race.

On the first climb of the difficult hilly circuit, the peleton's lead was crumbling away, and soon, as tiredness took its toll, less and less of tem took turns on the front.

Four riders remained off the front of the peleton, as last ditched attacked from Charteau (EUC), Sanz (MOV), Noval and Hulsman (FAR)just delayed the inevitable.

On the final climb, the attacks from the favourites happened, with Valverde (MOV) the strongest over the top, with Velits (OPQ) 1'00 behind and G. Izagirre (EUS) chasing hard behind him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0011_zps36499a45.jpg

With Remy unable to react to the attacks, it was up to Davide to try and do something for the team. With Brambilla (OPQ) for company, they were in a small group, fighting for 7th.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0012_zpsfe41af69.jpg

Back at the front, Valverde soloed to a great win, and Velits just holds off Izagirre to complete the podium. Villella would come home a fantastic 8th place, as Brambilla outsprints him for the minor places.

Race Debrief

Yet again Davide shows why we gave him a new contract so early in the season. Fantastic ride by the young Italian, out gunning many more experienced riders, and finishing strongly at the end to take a Top 10 finish.

Only negative from the race would be the performance of Di Gregorio. He was badly positioned all day, and will need to improve his form ahead of the Giro del Trentino.

Good result for Villella, looking forward to see what he can do in Trentino. Smile

Report says he finished 7th though, which should be 8th. Wink

Nice result for Villella today Smile and good to see Fleeman get into the break Wink

the_hoyle
@mvh: oops... well spotted Smile going to be tough at Trentino with the TTT, but also confirmed that Wiggins, Scarponi and Hesjedal will start the race

@sutty: Fleeman has worked hard for others in the previous races, so deserved to be given a free role. He rode well in the break until it got caught

*** BREAKING NEWS ***

www.cyclingnews.com/i/cyn_hd/logo.png

L'Equipe demands answers from FDJ.fr

French newspaper L'Equipe today published an article, demanding answers from FDJ.fr to the sudden erratic form of their starlet Arthur Vichot during the recent Circuit Sarthe-Pays de la Loire.

Following a magnificent solo victory on stage 4, Vichot looked certain to walk away with the Overall GC classification going into the hilly final stage in Saint Vincent de Lorouër. However, his adoring fans looked on in horror, as the young Frenchman would struggle throughout the stage, failing to react to attacks and losing over 6 minutes in the process.

Many in the cycling world instantly questioned the reason behind his performance, with rumours ranging from internal team issues and Vichot refusing to ride in the stage, to inevitable talk of doping.

The performances in the final stage of Maxime Bouet (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Pello Bilbao (Euskatel-Euskadi) have also been brought into question, as they too would go from high GC positions on stage 4 to finishing just inside the Top 20 at the end of the race.

Hmmm, very suspicious indeed Frown

Or maybe they just had a bad day, but that doesn't sell newspapers I guess. Pfft

the_hoyle
@sutty: that's why people want answers Wink

@mvh: that may just be the case, but sadly the cycling press don't think like that...

Spoiler
I just want to say right now that this is not going to turn into a big doping story and take over in my reports. Many stories seem to head down that route, and I do not want that to happen in mine Smile

Adam Yates will lead the squad, supported by Simon Richardson and Dan Fleeman.

Trent Lowe completes the squad, and will work as domestique and bottle carrier.

Stage Reviews

Stage 1 (Arevalo-Valladolid -- 194.3km): Francesco Gavazzi (AST) left it late to open his sprint, and just took the victory on stage 1 ahead of Rene Mandri and Colbrelli (BAR). Trent tried to escape in the break of the day, but was instantly pulled back early in the stage.

Stage 2 (Uruena-Palencia -- 168.9km): Another bunch sprint, but it would be Michael Kreder (GRS) how would dominate, comfortably taking the victory. Windy conditions and a fast paced peleton destroyed the Rapha-Bianchi sprint train, as Adam Yates was the highest finisher in 14th.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0005_zpsf1984526.png

Zoidl solos to the victory on the queen stage

Stage 3 (Aguilar de Campoo-Cervera de Pisuerga -- 187.3km): Riccardo Zoidl (RSW) soloed the victory on the GC deciding stage 3. The young Austrian showed his talent for the future, breakaway from the favourites with 15km to go, and holding them off to claim the win. Enrico Battaglin (BAR) and Ion Izagirre (EUS) completed the podium both on the day and on GC. Adam Yates continued his fine season as a neo-pro, finishing 9th on GC. Simon Richardson would also come home with the KoM jersey after a final stage breakaway.

Race Debrief

Before the race, we were hoping for a Top 5 finish on GC, and a stage win. We come away with a podium on Stage 1, Top 10 finish and the KoM jersey.

The team worked perfectly, and whilst there were high expectations, we had a young leader, who coped with the expectations very well. You have to pleased despite the fact we failed with our goals.

Must have been a Rapha goal, the team always fails those. Pfft

Nice result for Mandri and Yates though.

@admir: For Yates, I think it is a good result. I could have gone with Villella or Di Gregorio in the race, but was confident Adam could do the business. Top 10 is still a good result Smile but yes, better results to come (hopefully!)

Tour du Finistere
13th April 2014

www.tourdufinistere.fr/images/bandeau.jpg

Whilst one team in Spain finalises their form, we have another in Brittany, France for the Tour du Finistere.

A hilly classic, and part of the French Cup calendar, it should be an exciting ahead for all to watch.

Linus Gerdemann and Nathan Earle will co-lead the team in France, with Simon Yates as reserve should the finish end in a bunch sprint.

We also bring Caleb Ewan and his sprint team of Philip Lavery, Fredrik Ludvigsson and Damien Howson, who are just looking at getting miles in their legs ahead of the Tro-Bro Leon and Giro del Trentino.

Tom Southam completes the squad, acting a road captain, and working on his fitness before the start of the UK Premier Calendar.

Natnael Berhane (EUC) became France's adopted prodigal son, as he sprinted to victory in Quimper. The Eritrean rider came from a long way behind on the climb to the finish, stealing the win ahead of Giovanni Visconti (MOV) and Brett Lancaster (OGE). Philip Lavery was our highest finisher, showing his strengths to come across the line a creditable 14th place.

Race Debrief

There was no pressure on the team to perform in what was a very difficult finish to the race. We tried to break with Linus in the last 5km, but he was, sadly, a marked man by the Movistar team. Simon worked well for Linus in the final third of the race, so focus was turned to Lavery and Caleb. Not their type of sprint, but both showed a willingness to do well, with 14th and 16th a good finish from the pair.

Tro-Bro Leon
14th April 2013

www.lncpro.fr/Img/Logo_TroBro.jpg

Part two of our racing in France, and another French Cup event in the form of the Tro-Bro Leon.

Technically a flat race, this will not be as easy as it looks on paper. Sections of cobbles and dirt tracks, combined with the potential for strong winds and rain, make this a very unpredictable one day classic. The tight circuits on the finish could also have a big effect on the final outcome.

We come to the race with the same which participated in the Tour du Finistere yesterday, but focus will shift from a puncheur and hilly climber, to our sprints team.

Caleb will be our main focus, with Philip Lavery, Simon Yates, Linus Gerdeman and Damien Howson ready to work for him.

Nathan Earle, Fredrik Ludvigsson and Tom Southam complete the line up, all working as domestiques.

Edwig Cammaerts (COF) held of an advancing peleton, to take the victory on a thrilling day in Northern France. The young Belgian, who had spent the entire day in the breakaway, set off on his own with 5km to go, and somehow held on through the tight finishing circuit to take the win.

Andre Schuze (EUS) and Stephane Rossetto (BIG), two of Cammaerts' breakaway companions, completed the podium ahead of the stage favourites picking up the minor stage placings. Philip Lavery was again the team's highest finisher, coming home 6th, after Caleb was blocked in on the run-in to the finish.

Race Debrief

We were so close! It was another fantastic team effort on what, as anticipated, ended up being a more difficult race than expected. The tight finish meant you needed to be well positioned from a long way out, and no team could do that, and the break stayed away. If the break had been caught, then Philip would be looking at a podium finish right now.

Caleb was unlucky at the finish, but I think everyone, including those who finished in Spain today, look ready for Trentino and the battle for the GC with some very big name riders...

UCI to investigate Circuit Sarthe result

World Cycling's governing body, the UCI, today announced that they will investigate the events of the Circuit Sarthe-Pays de la Loire, following the demand from the French newspaper L'Equipe, as well as many others on cycling forums across Europe, for answers.

A panel of experts will look into all areas of the race, to answer the questions of why several riders suffered performance related issues during the final stage of the race, despite being in high Overall positions at the beginning of the day.

With it expected for the panel to take a number of days to gather all the information, people will have to wait a little longer for the answer they crave.

Adam Yates did well to grab a top ten at the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon Smile

And a nice ride from Philip Lavery at Tro-Bro Leon Smile

And i wonder what the UCI will uncover about the Circuit Sarthe-Pays de la Loire Frown

mvhoogdalem
Good result for Lavery at Finistere. Although his 6th place at Tro-Bro Leon is better of course. Smile

Lets hope the UCI finds nothing, but bad legs. Wink
