Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
April 5th, 2014 : Stage 4
Eibar – Ber-Ibardin: 148.4 kms - Hilly

Another stage classified as hilly, but the terrain doesn't really change from the previous stages. Several climbs mark the way to the finish, and none are steeper than the end of the last which makes its way quickly to the line. Again this will favor the climbers much more than the punchers.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/41.jpg

A set of seven riders made the move into the break of the day. This strong group features Jesús Hernández (Saxo), Haimar Zubeldia (RSLT), Damiano Caruso (Cannondale), André Cardoso (Caja), Yannick Eijssen, Javier Moreno (Movistar), and Wesley Sulzberger (Orica).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/42.jpg

It would take time for the attacks to start, but when they did the pace was relentless. This move is made by Ryder Hesjedal (Blanco), Jurgen Van den Broeck (Lotto) and Tony Martin (OPQS).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/43.jpg

Their move provokes Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha) to defend his jersey, and drags Wout Poels (Vacansoleil) and Tom Slagter (Blanco) with him while the guns of Astana and BMC start to put people up at the front to chase it down.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/44.jpg

The breakaway starts it's way up the final climb, the attacking threat behind them by some distance still but always dangerous. Only Sulzberger looks like he might miss out on a fight for the victory up top.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/45.jpg

The collective effort of the teams would stop the danger of that attack and bring everything back to one big group again before the final climb of the day. The breakaway already has a good start up the climb and looks certain to stay away from the field.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/46.jpg

Victory for Haimar Zubeldia as he is followed by fellow Spaniards Hernández and Moreno. The breakaway was able to survive and hold off the field, an exciting win for the riders on a great performance.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/47.jpg

The action hasn't stopped below though as Cadel Evans finally makes his move the reaction is a bit slow as some recover from the previous attacks, but will the steep grades of the climb be a problem for a diesel like Evans?
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/48.jpg

It only slows him, doesn't stop him as he is able to hold off the other leaders, with Rodríguez close behind and seemingly the whole team of Sky chasing him up the climb. Evans will gain some time back from yesterday.

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
April 6th, 2014 : Stage 5
Bera – Oñati: 179.1 kms - Hilly

It is scary to call this one of the flatter stages of the tour, but that is what it is. For the first time in four days the finish isn't uphill though the profile before the finish will likely reduce whatever field there is to nothing.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/51.jpg

A standard breakaway sets clear, most notable including Gregory Brenes who locks up his KoM jersey on the day. The field wouldn't let a repeat happen today though as the group would be pulled back with plenty of room to spare.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/52.jpg

Riders start to get desperate and launch attacks from anywhere at any time throughout the stage, with only a time-trial left tomorrow they know they have to find a way to get time today.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/53.jpg

However it would come down to a small bunch sprint, and Damiano Cunego (Lampre) as he goes from a long ways out. Rodríguez (Katusha) follows as the finish line draws closer.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/54.jpg

But it would be the points leader Cadel Evans who would take another stage win. There is no time bonus though, so the GC doesn't change, and 24" is all that will separate Rodríguez and Evans.

Paris - Roubaix
April 8th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide

Paris - Roubaix is the culmination of the cobbled classics. The route is flatter than any of the Belgian races, but riders don't normally care after the 27 cobbled sections. The finish in the Roubaix velodrome can make for some of the most exciting sprint finishes though frequently no such sprint is required. As the third monument of the season everyone who is anyone will be riding and the very best of the classics riders are ready for this showdown.

Team Goals

This is the reason we signed Cancellara, this race is his race. Nothing short of being first into the velodrome and across the line is acceptable. We have an incredibly strong team to support him with Gilbert having an earlier win, and Van Avermaet with several podiums. The rest of the support is also very good, and Taylor Phinney could also prove to be extremely strong for this as well.

So the preview for Paris - Roubaix is up, I will race it tomorrow with a stream on twitch. I'm expecting to start about 11CDT (1600 GMT). However I will have the final time-trial left in Pais Vasco to cover first. (Which could be equally as exciting as Evans tries to make up 24 seconds on Rodríguez).

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
April 7th, 2014 : Stage 6
Oñati – Oñati: 18.2 kms - Hilly (ITT)

The finish of the tour is also hilly, though a time-trial that will decide the winner. The distance isn't too long, but should be enough to affect the outcome of this race. Will Rodríguez hold on? Can Evans catch up? Can Wiggins or Froome possibly get enough time back?
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/61.jpg

The early best time is set unsurprisingly by Tony Martin of Omega Pharma - Quick Step. His time would hold for most of the day until the later riders would give challenge.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/62.jpg

Bradley Wiggins (Sky) would be the only rider to best Martin, however he only did so by fractions of a second and left Martin officially 0" behind.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/63.jpg

The race though would be between Cadel Evans and Joaquím Rodríguez. Cadel would finish 3rd on the stage, two seconds behind Wiggins. But would it be enough to take over the race lead?
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/64.jpg

Rodrígeuz (Katusha) would finish the stage in 6th and 10 seconds behind Wiggins. Only 8" slower than Evans and good enough to hold onto the lead and claim victory in Pais Vasco.

Compiègne – Roubaix: 250.5 kms - Flat (Cobbles)

Everyone knows about this race and its cobbles, the question that remains is who can survive the challenge. A finish in the legendary Velodrome awaits for those who can muster the strength to handle the 27 cobbled sections.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR1.jpg

A group of eight riders forms the break of the day. The two strongest teams, BMC and Radioshack each getting a rider up in the form of Taylor Phinney and Jesse Sergent respectively.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR1-1.jpg

The first attack comes from Damian Gaudin (Jean Delatour) just after the first set of cobbles, he has a long way to go, and some time to cover to bridge the gap to the breakaway.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR2.jpg

Gaudin reaches the breakaway after the fourth set of cobbles and immediately works on the front, alternating mostly with Taylor Phinney who also needs to stay ahead of the field as long as possible.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR3.jpg

The race stalls for a bit, but picks up greatly on section 13, Beuvry-la-Forêt to Orchies, when Tom Boonen makes his move. To make life harder for the peloton, they are also just picking up stragglers from the breakaway and Romain Hardy (Cofidis) unfortunately impedes other riders.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR4.jpg

Fabian Cancellara is the first to get back onto his wheel, as the rest of the field now is forced to dig deep an try to catch up. BMC would quickly get numbers as several riders survive, including Van Avermaet, Gilbert and Burghardt.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR15.jpg

Up front only Gaudin and Phinney are left as they work together to try and continue to stay away over section 11, Auchy-lez-Orchies to Bersee. Though they eventually would be caught as expected by the thinning pack.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR5.jpg

Just when the race seemed to calm down a touch, Boonen makes another go at Mons-en-Pévèle, section 10. This time however teams are not surprised and keep contact with him, Cancellara quickly onto his wheel followed by Ladagnous (FDJ) and Ballan (RSLT).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR7.jpg

Just to prove that Boonen isn't the only one alive, Sebastian Langeveld (Orica) make an attack immediately following the cobbles. He is covered quickly though by Sep Vanmarke (Blanco).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR8.jpg

Phinney and Gaudin are finally caught in section 6, Cysoing to Bourghelles to Wannehain, as the still rather large group of 29 riders continues to close in on the velodrome, chances for a small bunch sprint are starting to look possible.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR9.jpg

An attack at Le Carrefour de l'Arbre from Tom Boonen eliminates everyone except for one, Fabian Cancellara who has been with him this whole race. With only three sections left it will come down to which of these two is stronger.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR10.jpg

However at Hem the race is decided as Fabian Cancellara pulls away from Tom Boonen, leaving him behind. It looks as though another 2nd place finish for Boonen is in store and Cancellara will take another victory to add to RVV and E3 this season.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/PR11.jpg

Cancellara enters the Velodrome on his own, a couple laps on the black line and he will claim his victory.

Team Goals

The classics are our strength, not just on the cobbles but also into the Ardennes. Phillipe Gilbert is still one of the very best on this terrain and we expect to continue our winning ways. We will send strong squads with him all the time but these races are his to win or lose.

Such a shame that Cadel couldn't get the Overall win at Pais Vasco, but he will be more than happy with his performance Smile

And what can you say about Fabian's ride at Paris-Roubaix, simply awesome Grin

I'm incredibly happy with Cadel's results in Pais Vasco, he was not in great form at the start, but got stronger and better as the race went on.

Our entire classics team has been a monster, frequently having 4 or more riders left when selection down to about 12 riders is made. Really gives us a lot of options.

Amstel Gold Race
April 15th, 2014
Maastricht – Valkenburg: 252 kms - Hilly

Amstel Gold Race really defines the hilly classics, a route that is littered with sharp quick climbs keeping the race from every seeing a flat road for more than a kilometer or two. The race though famed for the finish, up the Cauberg where something resembling a very small bunch sprint likely will take place.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/AGR1.jpg

A small breakaway of only 5 riders gets out front, with no rider particularly dangerous to finishing the race. With the leaders.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/AGR2.jpg

The race goes by surprisingly quietly until we get near the end and Peter Sagan (Cannondale) decides to try and break up the monotony. He wouldn't get much space and would be caught but the move seemed to free up the rest of the riders.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/AGR3.jpg

Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha), fresh off his victory at Pais Vasco decides to give an attack as well, he is marked immediately and get nowhere with a handful of riders on his wheel.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/AGR4.jpg

Next it was Ryder Hesjedal who went as soon as the pace slowed from Purito's attack. He would gain around 20 seconds on the field, but was too far out and eventually caught.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/AGR5.jpg

Waiting patiently Philippe Gilbert finally makes his move at the bottom of the Cauberg, with very little distance remaining. His pace is blistering, but Rodríguez and others don't waste too much time trying to react.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/AGR6.jpg

However they are unable to bring him back, as Gilbert takes the win. Gasparotto (Astana) takes 2nd and Rodríguez 3rd. Sagan and Jelle Vanendert (Lotto) round out the top 5.
