Strade Bianche
2nd March 2013

gallery.mailchimp.com/823d3a40b51c82f60f316baa5/images/header_Strade_Bianche_ITA.JPG

A victory and Top 10 finish is the team's current form in the recent one-day classics as we head to Strade Bianche, so let's hope for more the of the same!

Following his fine performance at GP Camaiore, Davide Villella will again lead the team, as today and tomorrow's Roma Maxima are two of his early season objectives.

He will be supported by Adam Yates, Tom Southam and Simon Richardson, just like in Camaiore, with Nathan Earle and Trent Lowe looking to play a free role in the stage.

Damien Monier will work as domestique, whilst Rene Mandri comes in for Fredrik Ludvigsson and will play a similar role.

This is one of our Season Goals, with a Top 5 being demanded by the Rapha Bosses.

After his 10th place in Camaiore, Villella will go on and win on the Piazza del Campo. Wink No Cannondale (Moser) on the startline. Sad

Some fine results for the big names in February.

Race Tactics

Today we are going to work for Davide but with a small different to how we have tried to race the stages recently. Original plan before the race was to attack with Yates and then with Davide to wear down the other favourites, but I just do not think this is the route for that sort of tactic.

Adam is feeling good this morning, and wants to see if he will allowed in the day's break. If not, Nathan is on hand to try it off the front instead.

We will then try and use the man up the road later in the stage when Davide goes on the attack. Protect him, work for him, the works! Think Jen Voigt in the Tour de France for the Schlecks.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zpsab7c0725.jpg

As planned, Adam was able to get himself into the day's break, as number of attacks couldn't all be neutralised by the peleton.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0005_zps4f4c90ad.jpg

BMC, IAM and Astana took the early control of the peleton, and clearly did not see the ten riders off the front as any sort of threat.

Time Gap -- 33km
Peleton > 2'49 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0007_zps50336ee1.jpg

Despite its size, the break worked well over the early parts, and soon the gap back to the main group was over 7 minutes at one point.

Time Gap -- 70km
Peleton > 7'02 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0009_zps0a9a3b50.jpg

That was big enough for the BMC team, as they began to up the pace on the front.

Time Gap -- 120km
Peleton > 3'59 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0011_zpsfa683cd4.jpg

Suddenly, the World Champion Philippe Gilbert (BMC) attacked, and put the peleton into a state of panic, as BMC just stopped working on the front.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0012_zps419af8ac.jpg

The Belgian rider bridged the gap with ease, and as the break splintered, Adam saw his chance to hit it off on his own.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zps35ee93b9.jpg

CRASH! Monier hits the deck hard from inside the peleton. He is up ok, with having difficulty riding to the finish. We will have to access him later ahead of Roma Maxima.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0014_zps3ac28f95.jpg

Back at the front, Gilbert had left Yates for dead, and the young Briton was just hoping he could drag himself back across the gap.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zpsf6634e7a.jpg

On the penultimate strade section, Gilbert's lead was just over a minute, with Adam sat in the gap in between.

Time Gap -- 170km
Peleton > 32" > Yates > 32" > Gilbert

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0018_zps8bbcc73d.jpg

ATTACK! Davide puts the plan into action, and jumps out of the saddle. Only Montaguti (ALM) and van Avermmaet (BMC) can go with him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0019_zps945d9367.jpg

Villella links up with Adam just as we hit the finale strade section of the race. Gilbert was 24" up the road, as the peleton continued to press hard behind.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0020_zps39c60cee.jpg

Yates did his job perfectly, and pulled Davide to within 22" of Gilbert. Could the Italian catch the World Champion?

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0021_zps0b5722e4.jpg

Into the last kilometer and Gilbert leads from Villella by only 16". This was his victory to throw away, and Davide as really tiring.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0022_zps2e399f6b.jpg

Victory goes to Gilbert, who rolls over the line completely on his last legs. Davide takes 2nd, with Heinrich Haussler (IAM) attacking late to complete the podium. A great day was finalised for the tea, by Yates holding onto for Fifth!

Stage Debrief

There are no words to describe Villella and Yates anymore! Their performances are just outstanding and they are outshining not only some of the senior members in the team, but also in the peleton.

Davide was in fine form today, and looks to have peaked perfectly for Roma Maxima. As for Adam, he is just dropping off after his final Murcia performance.

News on Damien after his crash is better than first thought. He has a few cuts on his left arm and leg, but did limp into the team bus, complaining of a sore knee. I think he might have to skip Roma Maxima and rest back at the team hotel.

So, Roma Maxima tomorrow, and another big finish from the team will be expected. In the shadow of the Colosseum in the Italian capital, you could say that it will have to be a 'gladiatorial' performance!

Villella deserves a Banana for that performance. Not a very exciting race overall though. Smile

Seeing as Villella is in an upwards spiral, he will win in Roma Maxima... I hope... not so sure anymore. Pfft

@mvh: thanks for the banana Wink the race was a strange one really! Gilbert attacked and no one reacted. Saxo split 4 off the front in the chase and destroyed any hopes for Sorensen in the process. No big names went with Villella and he just couldn't reach Gilbert in time...

I am hoping of a win as well Wink

Very good rides indeed from Davide and Adam against a quality field Grin

the_hoyle
@sutty: A strong field, but one that just was not on form. Only Gilbert was stronger than Davide. Adam got 5th, and I technically forgot about him for the final 5km and he was on 60 dot effort

Roma Maxima
3rd March 2013

cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/2013/02/18/2/logo_670.jpg

Three one-day classics down and two left to ride. And to be fair we are performing magnificently.

Villella will continue to lead the team, with the hope of going one better than his finish at Strade Bianche. Adam Yates will offer his support again, along with Nathan Earle and Simon Richardson like at Strade Bianche.

But that is where the team line up changes from the last few races in Europe. In comes Daniel Lloyd and Simon Yates for Tom Southam and Rene Mandri, with the injured Damien Monier is replaced by Daniel Fleeman. Trent Lowe woke this morning suddenly complaining of a stomach bug shortly after breakfast, so Remy Di Gregorio comes in at short notice to fill the gap left by him. We know that all these four played a big role in Malaysia and only returned last night, but they are keen to do the team proud.

As with Strade Bianche, a Top 5 finish is wanted by the Sponsors, and with our recent run, I wouldn't bet against it.

Race Tactics

Well we come to the race high on confidence and with high hopes of a good result.

Tactics will remain very similar to Strade Bianche, by trying to get in the early break, and then hoping that they can play a part later in the stage for Davide or maybe Adam.

With half the team tired after a long flight back from the Far East, our choices of who does what on the day could be down to recovery and recuperation ahead of the stage.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0004_zpsf69e66ea.jpg

Richardson was the man who made his way into the day's break, as we looked to put our plan for the stage into action. 4 riders in total made the break, with a further three more attacking out the peleton behind.

Time Gap -- 15km
Peleton > 54" > Chasers > 1'29 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0006_zpsf28a06b9.jpg

A large group of 7 riders would form off the front of the peleton, and together they worked well to open up a large gap.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0007_zps274506fb.jpg

Astana, Cannondale and Flaminia took control of the peleton, and did not seem at all worried by the size or the strength of the break.

Time Gap -- 45km
Peleton > 7'33 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0009_zps3a19f776.jpg

The break's lead peaked at 8'34" before the peleton decided to up the pace and begin the chase with just over half of the stage remaining.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0011_zps7a8eaae7.jpg

In the hills, the break's work was forced to be carried out by Simon, as the other teams slowly decided to stop taking turns on the front.

Time Gap -- 105km
Peleton > 3'54 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0012_zps55e8239d.jpg

This played right into the hands of the Saxo led peleton, and the gap was now dropping with every pedal stroke of the main pack.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zps35d75fec.jpg

It would on the slopes that the main show would start. Stannard (SKY) attacked first, taking Rogina (ADR) with him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0016_zps530f687d.jpg

The hills were a disaster for Villella and the team. Constant changes in pace, further attacks and tiring legs meant that he missed the split of the favourites and he had a long chase on the descent.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zps31179a83.jpg

Off the front, Stannard had attacked again, and was joined by Betancur (ALM) on the run towards the finish.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0018_zps14616a2b.jpg

The pair would be brought back at the 5km to go banner, and a total of 28, including Richardson would come to the finish ready to contest the sprint.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0019_zps3757b0b0.jpg

In the sprint, there was no doubt with the winner. Marcato (VCD) was clearly the strongest and fastest at the end, and he easily takes the win, ahead of Majka (TST) and Reda (AND). Simon would come home in 23rd, whilst Villella crossed the line 36th.

Stage Debrief

Well I suppose you can't perform above your weight in every stage, and I suppose it had to happen were we had a bit of an off day.

Davide was done magnificently recently, and I think this was just one race too many in a short period of time for his young legs. Simon did the team proud with his day in the break, and kept in the lead group to try and contest the sprint at the end.

We have a short break to rest the legs before Coppa Citta di Stresa, and that looks like a stage for the sprinters, so we will have to see what happens in a week's time.

@mvh: Fewer 'big' teams, like BMC etc, but the smaller teams have brought their A-teams. Tired legs took their toll on Rapha in the end.

Too bad the team was tired from their efforts in Strade, which isn't strange considering their age. Better luck next time. Smile

It was nice to see Simon finish in the front group in what otherwise was a day of struggle for the guys Wink
