GP Camaiore
28th February 2014

www.procyclingstats.com/races/logos/2013-02/GP-Camaiore.png

Only a few stages remain in Malaysia, but back in Europe, the early season classics are getting into full swing.

Rapha-Bianchi bring the almost the same squad to Italy for the GP Camaiore, with the only change being Damien Monier in for Rene Mandri.

Like in Murcia, Davide Villella and Adam Yates will lead the team, with the latter looking for more glory. Nathan Earle, Trent Lowe and Simon Richardson will provide the support, whilst Fredrik Ludvigsson, Tom Southam and Monier will play a free role, aiming for the day's breakaway.

A strong Start List in Italy, as some riders fine tune ahead of Strade Bianche and Roma Maxima, so the plan is just to remain competitive and a Top 20 finish for one of the young leaders.

@sutty: it is all completely flat to the end of the race, so no chance of being able to steal some time back to make the podium Frown

Camaiore-Camaiore -- 183.8km

Race Tactics

The plan today is to try and work for Davide. He sacrificed himself at Vuelta a Murcia for Adam, so it is the team's time to repay him on a course that suits him more than in Murcia.

We will look for the early breakaway, and see how we get over the stage. No need to go on the offensive, just stick with the stage favourites.

We made sure we got Nathan into the day's break, and he was joined by Bakumenko (ISD), Cecchin (PPO), Irizar (RLT) and Gorodnichev (FLM) out on the road

Time Gap -- 20km
Peleton > 1'49 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zps9354b866.jpg

As the gap opened, Lang (IAM) and Fortin (BAR) went off the front of the peleton, hoping to join up with the lead group.

Time Gap -- 40km
Peleton > 1'08 > Chase Group > 56" > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0006_zps7e45bff4.jpg

A group of 7 formed as they started the first lap of the hilly circuit on the outskirts of Camaiore.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0007_zps9f462cc3.jpg

A large number of team took control of the peleton, with Sky, BMC and Katusha being the main protagonists in the chase.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zpsd481b7a7.jpg

The breakaway's gap grew as much as 5'33" out on the course, but suddenly on the second ascent of the finishing circuit climb, Astana and Katusha drilled the peleton, and the gap was down to 1'33".

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0010_zps772d2010.jpg

CRASH! The current WorldTour Leader Alexandr Kolobnev (KAT) hit the group on the descent back to the finish. He went down hard, and suddenly the peleton stopped riding hard.

Time Gap -- 90km
Peleton > 4'44 > Leaders

Time Gap -- 140km

The penultimate ascent of the climb, and the peleton was closing in fast. Orders were given to Nathan to attack and see if his legs could carry him to the end.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zpse5ba9e59.jpg

Astana were drilling it hard on the front, and no one would be allowed to get away. Only 4 of the break remained off the front with 1 lap to go.

Time Gap -- 165km
Peleton > 22" > Chase Group > 30" > Earle

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0015_zpsa5eff935.jpg

Earle would be finally caught as the main group hit the climb for the final time. He had done an excellent job in the break and well worth the plaudits from the team.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0016_zps0274351b.jpg

Time for the favourites to show their cards! Gatto (FAR) attacked first, with number of riders, including Davide trying to react behind.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zps29719582.jpg

Less than 5km to go, and the winner would come the lead group of ten riders. Davide was really looking comfortable amongst the main favourites

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0018_zpsc8fa58f7.jpg

The sprint though was a completely different story. Davide just didn't have the kick needed to stay with the WorldTour riders, and was fighting for the lower Top 10 places.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0019_zpsea187fb2.jpg

Gatto was the strongest of the group at the end, and takes the win for Farnese-Vini. Selle (AND) and Kessiakoff (AST) completed the podium, whilst Villella came in a fantastic 10th place.

Stage Debrief

These European Hilly Classics are really turning out well so far! Victory in Spain, Top 10 here in Italy and two bigger races still to come. Bring it on I say!

Davide really showed his talent and potential today, and the whole squad could not be prouder of him. You see why the big teams are already sniffing around him and I even had Cannondale make an enquire about him and his future last night. It could be difficult to keep hold of him at this rate.

One man who I am delighted to have tied down for a few years with the team is Nathan Earle. Like at the Australian Nationals, he proved to be a strong rider, and he almost held on for what could have been a great win for him. His time will come. I just know it.

Well we have 3 stages left in Malaysia, and our Classics team has Strada Bianche and Roma Maxima to ahead of them. Let's hope we can continue this nice run of good results.

Go away Cannondale. Villella is not going anywhere. Angry

Great 10th place for him, which is probably highest possible with this strong startlist. Smile

Cyril Lemoine (SOJ) took the stage win, as the break succeeded managed to stay away to end in terrible conditions in Malaysia. Caleb finished well down in the sprint of the peleton, as the GC remained unchanged.

Race Tactics

Two to go, and we will continue to try and get Caleb his stage win! We have allowed him to do his own thing in the sprint and that seems to be hit and miss at the minute. We missed the break yesterday, so let's hope for more luck today.

Another stage for breakaway victory but only just! Simone Campagnaro (PPO) takes the win, as break is caught on the line but the mass sprint. Lavery is cruelly beaten in the finish by Kruopis (OGE) and Colbrelli (BAR) to finish 5th, after spending the entire day in the breakaway and looking certain for a podium.

Race Tactics

Final stage, and let's hope Caleb can do it. He has been looking tired the last couple of days, and his legs just haven't been there for him.

Last time looking after Remy as well, and we are delighted with his result in the GC and KoM Classification.

Stage & Race Debrief

So unlucky for Caleb at the finish. He took the wheel of Matti Breschel and looked good for a podium until he got boxed in behind Robert. But I'm sure he will learn from it, and his positioning in the final sprint will improve with experience and age.

Overall though, we couldn't be happier as a team. Fourth place on GC, King of Mountains Jersey winner, fourth place in the Points Classification, two podium stage finishes and four Top 5 stage finishes. We come away from Malaysia a pretty successful squad. The whole team can be proud after we came into the race on the back of the UCI hearing.

Now let's show what we can do back in Italy!

Shame that Remy couldn't make it on to the Final podium Frown

mvhoogdalem
Good results for Caleb. Remy did great with his 4th place is GC, not sure why I did not believe in him. Pfft

the_hoyle
@sutty: there was no chance of being able to make up the time. I didn't want to do it with bonus seconds, and any attack would be stupid Frown

@mvh: Looking back I am happy with Caleb's results. I need to remember that he is only young and not as good as the likes of Cav / Greipel etc. Well not yet anyway Wink as for your lack of belief in Remy... I used it as fuel to really perform in the race Cool

February Review - Major Results

forum.cyclingnews.com/cyclingnews_logo_big.gif

With no WorldTour Races in February, I thought I would give a general run down of the major results in February, so you can see how everyone's form is slowly building ahead of the Spring Classics.

Tour of Qatar

znn.india.com/sports/2013/6/30/Marcel-Kittel.jpg

Marcel Kittel (ARG) took 4 stage wins on is way to the Overall Victory in the Tour of Qatar, ahead of Leigh Howard (OGE) and Zdenek Stybar (OPQ). The young Sprinter would also go home with the Points and Under 25 Jersey on his shoulders.

Tour of Oman

i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02480/Peter_Sagan_2480291b.jpg

Consistancy was the key for Peter Sagan (CAN), as four podium finishes handed him the overall victory in Oman, ahead teammate Ivan Basso and Domenico Pozzovivo (ALM). THe Slovak all rounder would also go home with the Points and Under 25 jersey to his name.

Volta ao Algarve

Solo victory on Stage 3, followed by a strong TT showing on stage 4 was enough to give Vincenzo Nibali (AST) the overall win in Portugal. Teammate Janez Brajkovic and Haimar Zubeldia (RTL) rounded off the podium.

Two stage wins and a podium sealed the Overall win for Samuel Sanchez (EUS) in Andalucia. Laurens ten Dam (BEL) and Rui Costa (MOV) completed the podium.

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02188/Tom_Boonen-celebra_2188549b.jpg

A late strong attack was all it needed for Tom Boonen (OPQ) to win the first Cobbled classic of the 2013 Season. The Belgian Veteran will look to continue this form as he goes up against Cancellara and company in the Cobbled Spring Classics in early April.
