Santos Tour Down Under
Jan 17th, 2014 : Stage 1
Elizabeth – Clare: 150.6 kms - Flat

Stage one of the Tour Down Under provides a sprinters finish assuming the peloton can hold together over a gradual uphill course and a final climb before the descent to the finish could prove a point for an attack.

A great site to see as racing again gets underway, many riders and many teams all hoping for the best this year, starting today.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/11.jpg

An early two man breakaway featuring Latvian champion Aleksejs Saramotins (Accent Jobs) and Christophe Kern of the new Jean Delatour team that took over sponsorship from Europcar. In this sprint the Latvian gets the better of his French counterpart.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/12.jpg

Marco Pinotti of BMC gives chase to the two riders when the road starts to kick up just a bit, but is unable to catch the pair until later as Kern takes the lead in the KoM after the first and only climb of this stage.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/13.jpg

With the race nearing the finish, Pinotti is the last of the three breakaway riders to give in, but he too gets pulled back as the teams wind up their trains for the finishing sprint.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/14.jpg

BMC is the first team to make the big move, as Greg Van Avermaet opens up the sprint leading out Sebastian Lander. Behind them is the FDJ train pulling for Nacer Bouhanni and on the far side of the road, Dutch champion Theo Bos (Blanco) starts the leadout for Mark Renshaw (Blanco).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/15.jpg

And the Aussie Mark Renshaw wins the first stage of the TDU with fierce competition and several riders behind by less than a wheel. Rounding out the podium is Sébastien Chavanel (Jean Delatour) and Nacer Bouhanni.

Santos Tour Down Under
Jan 18th, 2014 : Stage 2
Bute – Jamestown: 147.8 kms - Flat

Stage two is another chance for the sprinters that weren't able to get the better of the local Renshaw, who will now have to defend the race leader's jersey. Like the first stage there is some elevation gain, but not enough at any point that would cause a problem for the sprinters.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/TDU2.jpg

Unlike stage one, the breakaway starts early and the five riders are out on their own most of the stage. In this group is Steele Von Hoff (Garmin), Yannick Eijssen (BMC), Cameron Wurf (Cannondale), Frederik Willems (Accent Jobs), and Stijn Devolder (RSLT).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/21.jpg

The first sprint is spirited, but easily won by Garmin's Steele Von Hoff ahead of Wurf and Willems.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/22.jpg

The King of the Mountains point is also hotly contested and a much better fight as Cameron Wurf is able to just hold off Eijssen and Von Hoff. The group would not be able to hold off the peloton much longer though as the stage was set for a second mass sprint.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/23.jpg

With the break caught, the sprinters would again get their chance, and this time it would be Jürgen Roelandts (Lotto) beating out Bouhanni (FDJ) and Roberto Ferrari (Lampre). Renshaw would finish 5th and hold onto his lead.

Santos Tour Down Under
January 19th, 2014 : Stage 3
Port Pirie – Wilmington: 197.1 kms - Hilly

The first of two decisive stages for the GC, though the climb isn't too challenging, if a pace gets pushed the sprinters will certainly not be able to follow and with a quick downhill to the finish, the first over the top could also be the first on the line.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/TDU3.jpg

The largest breakaway group yet, led by Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale), other riders in the group are Daryl Impey (Orica), Tosh Van der Sande (Accent Jobs), Aurélien Passeron (FDJ), Christophe Kern (Jean Delatour), Marco Pinotti (BMC), Alex Dowsett (Movistar).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/31.jpg

The first of the sprint points is contested and won by Daryl Impey ahead of Tosh Van der Sande and Aurélien Passeron. The rest of the riders just trying to hang close to the sprinters as they go.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/32.jpg

After the sprinters take their turn, the climbers do the same, with Pinotti getting the upper hand over Dowsett and Passeron, with Kern trying to keep with the pace.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/33.jpg

While the breakaway starts the final climb first, the action in the peloton heats up starting with Greg Van Avermaet pushing the tempo with Cadel Evans right on his wheel.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/34.jpg

Evans decides to push on his own, feeling the group behind him struggling with the pace, he quickly catches and burns up what little Pinotti has left before moving on.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/35.jpg

Though late in reacting, chase is given as Luis Leon Sánchez (Blanco) and Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha) separate themselves from the bunch.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/36.jpg

Going over the top of the climb the gap is steady with Evans leading, followed by Sánchez and in the distance Rodríguez. Without a major change this should be the order of the finish as well.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/37.jpg

The Australian Champ takes home his 2nd victory of the early season, and will put on the leader's jersey instead of his champion's jersey tomorrow. Sánchez finishes 2nd and is 46 seconds behind in the GC.

Santos Tour Down Under
January 20th, 2014 : Stage 4
Burra – Springton: 163.9 kms - Flat

Stage four goes back to the sprinters, there is a moderate bit of climbing in the last third of the race, but assuming no pressure is really applied it shouldn't cause a problem for the sprint.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/TDU4.jpg

The breakaway for today could have been a challenge for BMC, as they would be asked to do at least some of the pace-making, however a well timed move from Marco Pinotti puts him with the break and relieves BMC from any duties at the front.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/41.jpg

A pair of sprint points would be challenged by four of the seven riders in the breakaway, with the most points going to David Zabriskie (Garmin) and Ian Stannard (Sky), the remaining few went to Michael Mørkøv of Saxo-Tinkoff.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/42.jpg

The third sprint stage of the tour would see our third different sprint winner with Roberto Ferrari (Lampre) beating everyone else to the line. Renshaw (Blanco) finished 2nd and Tyler Farrar (RSLT) took third.

I saw that, but I usually take the time to read through pretty much the entire forum. A very good start already for the team Down Under!

Santos Tour Down Under
January 21st, 2014 : Stage 5
Balaklava – Houghton: 185.9 kms - Hilly

Stage 5 is the last chance for a serious change in GC, the majority of the stage is flat, but the finish is on top of a hill, and will have riders a chance to gain some time over their rivals.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/TDU5.jpg

An early break took a several kilometers to get established, but young gun Michal Kwiatkowski (OPQS) got things rolling, and won the pair of sprint points over Mickaël Delage (FDJ) and Christophe Kern (Jean Delatour).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/51.jpg

The mountain points would be hotly contested though as Kern, Alex Dowsett (Movistar) and Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale) were competing for leadership in the KoM classification. Kern would win the day and take a slim 4 point lead in the KoM.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/52.jpg

Towards the end of the stage, BMC turned the reins over to Fabian Cancellara to pull everyone back and keep things clear for Evans to retain the lead. The newcomer to BMC did his job and more, rolling right off the front of the pack and opening up a gap for himself.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/53.jpg

The gap though, opened up the door for attacks, and Luis León Sánchez (Blanco) and Joaquín Rodríguez (Katusha) were eager to strike and try to put some time into Cadel Evans.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/TDU/54.jpg

The move would work, as LLS and Rodríguez finish one-two, but Evans with the help of Van Avermaet and Cancellara worked back up and finished 3rd only ten seconds back of Sánchez and with the same time as Rodríguez.
