NRS 2015/ Season's ending..
tsmoha
imageshack.com/a/img22/1139/4njg.png

It's still one race remaining in the NRS - one of the most prestigious (Grafton to Inverell) - but the most important questions have been answered in the recently held Shipwreck Coast Classic:

Neil Van der Ploeg claimed the Individual's NRS-title thanks to his 4th place in the Shipwreck! With 749 points in total, he obviously had an outstanding season and one may wonder, if he rounds up this year with a win in Inverell maybe?!

The battle for the podium is still open though: both Earle and Haig (Huon) have the chance to make the Top-3 - if one of them grabs the win in Inverell! Defending NRS-champion Davison (Drapac) will hope for them not winning, of course.

Budget Forklifts delivered in the recently held classics and finally sealed the deal! Huon won't stand a chance to close the gap, so Budget will claim the Team's NRS-title in 2013! So unless a Huon-rider wins the season-concluding classic, it will be a rather disappointing year for the team.

Great team win for Budget Grin

Ian Butler
Hope Earle sneaks into that top 3 still!!!

baia
Oohh... i thought Huon would gain enought points to avoid that... my bad. Smile
Earle might do it, but i think there will be no changes in top3.. Smile

@baia: Budget managed to win at least 3 of the last races' team-classifications, so no chance for Huon in the end Wink

@Ian: Would be cool, honestly. It would be great answer to Budget's success in the recent classics, too!

@sutty: Smile Their dominance paid off, well deserved win, imo!

The Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic is a 228km road race conducted on a point to point course between the towns of Grafton and Inverell in northern New South Wales. The 2013 event is the 53rd edition of a race that has enjoyed a long and successful history.

The course has remained the same over the years with the exception of the last two events which have added a deviation off the Gwydir Highway through the township of Elsmore to include one more final climb before the finish in Inverell.

This has proved very successful and consolidated the reputation of the Grafton to Inverell as the toughest one day cycling event in Australia.

The final and maybe most challenging event in the NRS 2013 is ready to kick off: the famous Grafton to Inverell Cycling Classic!

Next NRS-champion Van der Ploeg has no pressure here, but the battle for NRS's podium is still open: Nathan Earle (Huon) still have chances to grab either 2nd (if O'Brien fails to score today) or 3rd in the rankings, while teammate Jack Haig could also sneak into Top-3. Both need to win today's tough race though.

imageshack.com/a/img716/43/2qgl.jpg

So it ain't surprising to see both Huon-Genesys and Budget Forklifts leading the chase! Two riders - McPhee (Euride) and Van Hout (Lightsview) - escaped with 160km to go, but the gap decreases halfway through the race.

imageshack.com/a/img62/8277/ykgt.jpg

30km remaining and the first favorites launch an attack!

O'Brien (Budget) and
Clark (Charter Mason)

attack the peloton! O'Brien looks to secure his 2nd in the NRS-rankings, obviously. But this is just the first of more moves..

imageshack.com/a/img266/5638/tpeg.jpg

The two struggled to establish a bigger gap and with 16km to go, Earle (Huon) makes HIS move!

He quickly overtakes O'Brien/Clark just at the bottom of today's final climb!

imageshack.com/a/img689/6062/5ift.jpg

No easy action for Earle, though! 5 more favorites followed his attack and also teammate Haig kicks to take the leading position!

The two early escapees are pulled back and look to exhausted to stay with the following 6 favorites:

Haig (Huon)
Cupitt (Budget, last year's 2nd here)
Semple (Satalyst)
Earle (Huon)
O'Brien (Budget)
Clark (Charter)

imageshack.com/a/img62/7923/9a1o.jpg

The attacking goes on, as 5 more riders try to hang on with group Haig/Earle/O'Brien:

Donnelly (Huon)
Sulzberger (Drapac)
Neil Van der Ploeg (search2)
Norris (Jayco)
Elliott (Target)

face a 20"-gap on the new leading group, where Clark couldn't follow!

imageshack.com/a/img545/3742/7du4.jpg

It's less than 10km from the top of the climb to the finish and we see yet another Huon-rider on the attack:

Haig jumps out of the leading group and tries to solo away for the well needed race honours! He quickly establishes a 25"-gap!

imageshack.com/a/img209/4580/h5hh.jpg

And the young gun looks strong, really! With less than 6km remaining, Haig leads by 39" on the new chasing group:

Haig

Cupitt
Semple
O'Brien at 0.39

Elliott at 0.52

Earle
Sulzberger
Van der Ploeg
Norris
Donnelly
Clark at 1.15

So, as Earle seems to suffer from his earlier attack, it's Haig, who looks like he could achieve the win his team is seeking for!

imageshack.com/a/img838/2447/zgky.jpg

He takes it! Jack Haig succesfully held off the chasing group and wins the prestigious Grafton to Inverell! With NRS's 3rd Davison having no chance to score any points today, Haig will jump into the Top-3 in the final rankings!

imageshack.com/a/img836/8639/hon8.jpg

48" later, Semple crosses the line as 2nd! A great result for the former NRS-leader.

Budget's Cupitt completes today's podium, losing 57" on Haig eventually.

imageshack.com/a/img713/423/84w8.jpg

Van der Ploeg even manages to sprint for yet another Top-5-finish as 4th today! Like said before: a well deserved new champion he is!

O'Brien 5th ahead of Sulzberger, Norris and Elliott, while Earle totally collapsed in the final 10km to finish as 9th with 4 minutes in arrears. Still a good day for his team Huon, of course!

That looked a tough day in the saddle for the riders, but it didn't seem to bother Jack Haig Smile

Miguel98
Great win for Haig. Smile And tsmoha, what's going to happen since now the season is now over?

tsmoha
@sutty: He gave a sh** about his pain and just brought home this great victory Wink

@Mig: Well, that's the big question.. How to continue?

1) There will be still some action at the end of the season! The Tour of Bright, official final of the Victorian Road Series, but always attracting NRS-favorites as well, will be one of those. I decided to cancel some other events though, but we will see!

2) I do have some ideas about continuing the story! But tbh, i would like to attract more readers. You guys (Miguel, sutty, Ian, baia and miggi) have been true followers and i'm really thankful for that! But a few more would motivate me to keep the level of effort i'm putting into. This.

3) I will start kind of poll right after the very last events and summaries of the season, of which idea you would prefer. For example, i think i will give up on the ManGame-connection. Simply because the MG-season ain't over yet and in the near future!

Those screens( with the clouds) from race preview are amazing, really great ones..Wink
At least Earle tried but his legs were paying all the effort from this long competition... Well done by Haig, really strong finish and jumping to 3rd on Overall Ranks... good.
Thanks for your kind words about following your story but mate... it´s a privileg to be able to follow your story and i will always follow any story of yours.. Wink
Would be great to see this continue but i´m sure you will come out with something great .. Wink and indeed this story deserves more comments/readers, so common people, give some support. Wink

I have read everything, but for some reason i rarely post... not sure why not...
Really amazing story. The amount of work put into the stages, graphics etc really make it that much better. And of course the close racing helps out.

@Manx: Thanks, Manx! Glad you enjoyed following the story, leaving a few more comments here and there would help though Pfft Nah, I know it ain't easy to post in every story! I may come up with an idea to get the readers more involved, or closer connected to this.

The National Road Series 2013 is over! And first of all, congratulations to both Neil Van der Ploeg (search2) and Budget Forklifts for taking the titles this year. We've seen a lot of close and interesting races, so that's one more reason to say, that VdP did extremely well to finish the season with 830 points!

Mark O'Brien (Budget) and Jack Haig (Huon) complete the Individual's podium. A huge effort by Haig in the final Grafton to Inverell Classic made him claim the 3rd spot by only 3 points over defending NRS-champion Davison!

Budget Forklifts really dominated the Team's rankings in the end, thanks to their winning streak in 3 of the final 4 events! Defending champion Huon 2nd ahead of a really strong search2retain-squad, which re-claimed the 3rd place in the final event! Drapac will hope for more in 2014, especially in the Individual's rankings!

Well, in the end the strongest were the winners , so congrats to them..
Wouldn´t be that bad if we could watch another season just to see if VDP would be so strong again Grin .. but as i said before, i´m sure you will have something great to present next... Wink

Nice to see Budget Forklifts come out on top of the rankings Smile

I agree with what TMM said - I don't follow many stories page-by-page so to speak, but I really like this and do follow it, and the amount of work you must have put in for the stages especially is amazing! Sorry I don't really comment regularly, I just often don't have the time Embarassed

@baia: Guess it's almost certain, that we will see another season! If there will be some new ideas/changes, yes, hoping for some positive feedback then Smile

@sutty: That's what you was waiting for, right?! Wink I like it, too!

@Stromeon: Thank you for those words! It's always nice to read something like that and don't worry about less comments. I know it ain't easy to leave comments everywhere Wink Thanks for following, glad to have on board!

@all: So here some highlights of the late season races/classics, which didn't make the reports. I will be on a short trip to the Netherlands on weekend, so no more updates before monday/tuesday! Enjoy your weekends, as well Wink

@sutty and baia: Thanks, mates! Like the flowers-screen and also Wohler most, as well Wink

@all: So I'm back for more! It's been a while since the last Victorian Road Series-event has been held, but there's still the final event ahead. The Tour of Bright! One of the last races in 2013..

2013 will mark the 20th edition of the Tour of Bright, and what a year it will be! The Alpine Cycling Club will be going to extra lengths to commemorate the occasion.

Stage 1/The finish line is located at the top of Tawonga Gap. This stage has created a great atmosphere at the finish line, as everyone watches people arriving.

Stage 2/ The Individual Time Trial is where the rider tests themselves against the clock on an out and back course to Porepunkah.

Stage 3/ The route to Mt.Hotham is one of the most picturesque and challenging for any cyclist. A total of 55kms, the final 30 kms are all uphill, on an ascent to rival those seen in the French Alps.

The "Grand Finale" of the VRS and also one of the last events in Australia's cycling scene 2013! VRS-leader Cameron Wurf will fight hard to defend his lead, while our blogger Rhys Gillett (African Wildlife) will try to score big time.. but we can expect some big names of the NRS as well: Jack Haig (last year's 4th here), Matt Clark (defending champion) and more!
