Making A Nation Proud [Giro d'Italia - Stage 6] -- DEAD STORY
the_hoyle
i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/banner-nation_zps9772ac71.png

With my Rapha-Rouleur story on hold until the release of the PCMDaily 2013 Expansion Pack and hopefully a much improved patch from Cyanide, I have decided to fill the time with a quick story, where I will ride each of the Grand Tours in turn.

In each of the races, I will select a team from that country (e.g. Italian team for Grio, French team for Tour and Spanish Team for Vuelta) and I will try and make the nation proud with my team's efforts.

Giro d'Italia

The Route

www.cyclingshorts.uk.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/planimetria_generale_en.jpg

The Key Stages

Stage 2 - Ischia to Forio (TTT)

www.bicycling.com/sites/default/files/images/stage-2-ischia-forio.jpg

The Team Time Trial should provide many teams with a chance to put their GC man in the best place possible early in the race

Stage 10 - Cordenons to Altopiano del Montasio

www.bicycling.com/sites/default/files/images/stage-10-cordenons.jpg

The Giro first Summit finish of 2013, and most likely to be a stage where any GC contenders who have lost time in the first week to look at gaining some time back.

Stage 14 - Cervere to Bardonecchia

www.bicycling.com/sites/default/files/images/stage-14-cervere-bardonecchia.jpg

The first of 2 big mountain stages before the second rest day. Another summit finish, and as the Giro approaches the final week, tired legs should play a big role.

Stage 15 - Cesana Torinese to Col du Galibier Valloire

www.bicycling.com/sites/default/files/images/stage-15-cesana-torinese.jpg

The Giro dips its toes into France for stage 15, finishing atop of the legendary Col du Galibier. With a rest day to follow, some riders might be wanting to go that little harder than normal.

Stage 18 - Mori to Polsi (ITT)

www.bicycling.com/sites/default/files/images/stage-18-mori-polsa.jpg

Any ITT can cause upsets to a GC, but make it a mountain ITT and sparks are going to fly. If you still have any hope in the fight for GC here, this stage may well make or break you.

Stage 19 - Ponte di Legno to Martell

www.bicycling.com/sites/default/files/images/stage-19-ponte-di-legno.jpg

The penultimate mountain stage, and only 3 stages left of this year's Giro. Riders will be at their limits by now, and will be hoping that they have just enough left in the tank to make it to the end.

Stage 20 - Schlanders to Tre Cime di Lavaredo

www.bicycling.com/sites/default/files/images/stage-20-silandro-schlanders.jpg

The final big stage, and the final summit finish of the race. In any normal Giro, this would be a hard stage, but after the mountain ITT on stage 18 and the short but very mountainous stage 19, this is going to be a living hell for some guys. If you are still in Pink after this stage, you clearly deserve to win the Giro d'Italia

@admir & ufo: Thanks a lot Smile

@rider: Each race will come with at least 2 goals for the teams, and they will revealed as part of the team presentation Smile

@jsh312mufc: Picked Androni because they have a chequered past in cycling, and what better way to redeem yourself than making your nation proud in their home Grand Tour. Also, I hate the kits of Bardini and Vini-Fantini, and I felt it would be a little too easy with someone like Lampre or Cannondale due to the riders they have.

I'd say the ITT is pretty crucial as well.

Good luck with this

@selwink: I have the ITT as a key stage, or do you mean the flat ITT?

@emre: Thanks

@MrTeamSky: Top 10 is realistic, but top 5 would be fantastic if we can get it

Giro d'Italia Stage 1 - Napoli

cycling-passion.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/giro-d-italia-2013-stage-1-profile-1024x650.jpg

Stage 1 is a 156km criterium style circuit around the coastal town of Napoli. Set to be a stage for the sprinters, the only thing on offer to the breakaway will be two KoM sprints towards the end of the stage, and the hope that they can hold on to claim the first Maglia Rosa of this year's Giro.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0005_zps21b2f464.jpg

23km: It was a group of 3 riders who managed to get away at the start of the stage. Andre Schulze (EUS), Enrico Battaglin (BAR) and Salvatore Puccio (SKY) were the men in the break, and worked well to open up a 1'44" lead.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0006_zpsd571478f.jpg

44km: With the break's lead reaching the 2'00" mark, Moreno Moser (CAN) set off in hot pursuit. We tried to get Fabio Felline off the front with him, but the peleton thought he was far too dangerous.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0007_zps7c7e975c.jpg

60km: As Moser bridged to the break with ease, the peleton just stopped all work, letting the gap extend to 3'44". See this as a nice chance to go off the front, orders were given for Carlos José Ochoa to attack hard.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0008_zpsea8294b9.jpg

76km: CRASH! David Millar (GAR) hits the ground on a tight corner. Luckily he brings down no one else, and it will be a long day in the saddle for him today now.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0009_zps64f0f316.jpg

104km: Ochoa did a great job getting across to the day's breakaway, and has enough left in the tank to comfortably take KoM sprint for 3 points, with Moser and Puccio taking the other points.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0010_zps22672f25.jpg

110km: It was Orica, OmegaPharma and Argos who took control of the pace making, and with 46km to go, the break was down to 2'56".

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0011_zps3d0b8a5b.jpg

135km: To the anger of Gianni Savio, Ochoa is blocked by Moser in the second KoM sprint, and only manages 3rd place. Moser picks up the maximum 3 points, and puts him in the Maglia Azzurra for tomorrow's stage.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0012_zps033f1e3b.jpg

141km: With the break all but caught, we decided to drop Carlos José back to the main group, saving energy for another day.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0013_zpse7ec0ac7.jpg

153km: With 3km to go, the sprint trains begin to form, with us and OmegaPharma looking the strongest at the front.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0015_zps88d0ea64.jpg

155km: 300metres to go, and it is Gavazzi versus Cavendish in the sprint. The Manxman opened his sprint early, and Mattia is closing in fast. Who will take the win...?

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Nation%20Proud/PCM0016_zpsea58f587.jpg

156km: VICTORY CAVENDISH! The former World Champion takes the win by half a bike length, ahead of Gavazzi with Matteo Trentin (OPQ) rounding off the podium.
