Ian Butler
He deserves rider of the month Wink
Nibali winning Tour, nice!

@Ian Butler: Yes, nice to see Elephant finally getting some glory. Nibali pipped Wiggins and Schleck to take the Tour de France win - he finally comes of age!

This four-day test in the Pyrenean mountains has been running since 1995. It was even won by former Raleigh rider Dan Fleeman in 2008. The mountainous stages 2 and 3 will undoubtedly be the deciding stages for the overall classification.

Startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Pyreneesst2.jpg

The tour looks set to favour the mountain goats, so riders like Moncoutie, Tiernan-Locke, Duque, Kern, Di Gregorio and Malacarne are likely challengers for the overall crown.

The team will be looking to ride themselves back into fitness through the tour, and with no mountain specialists, we have no expectations in terms of results.

I think a break could be possible.

@Miguel98 Great prediction!

Tour de Pyrenees: Race Report
01.08 - 04.08

The first stage was the the tour's only 'flat' stage, although it proved a tough test for the peloton, which split into three over the various lumps and bumps. The highlight of the stage for Raleigh was a late attempt by Oliphant to beat the bunch.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Oliattacksst1.jpg
Oilphant tests the pack on Stage 1

But he was caught within the last kilometre. Schumacher took the win and the overall lead (no photo unfortunately).

If the peloton thought Stage 1 was tough, then the second stage was an impossibly hard day in the mountains. All the Raleigh riders were dropped on the HC climb towards the end of the stage and never made it back into contention.

Moncoutie rode was peerless on the day, taking a superb solo win and was cool as a cucumber as he crossed the line, not even celebrating his victory.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Moncoutiewins.jpg
Moncoutie wins stage 2 and takes the overall lead

Moncoutie finished the day in yellow ahead of his team mate Di Gregorio, nearly a minute and a half back. Oliphant was Raleigh's best finisher, crossing the line in 29th, over 12 minutes down.

With no hope of a good GC performance, Raleigh decided to go on the offensive on Stage 3. Oliphant and Horton struck out alone from the gun.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/OliandHortonstrikeoutalone.jpg
It was a fine day for a breakaway

They were unacccompanied over the first three cols of the day, enabling them to pick up maximum KOM points.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/pickupmountains.jpg
Oliphant and Horton pick up yet more KOM points

With 90km remaining, they were caught by four pursuers: Phelan (Drapac), Newbury (Chipotle), Silva (PRT) and Podlaski (BGZ). At this stage, the break had a promising 9 minute lead over the bunch.

Horton unselfishly set the pace until exhaustion to extend the break's lead even further, finally peeling off at the foot of the final climb, the Joux Plane.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/JouxPlan.jpg
The five remaining escapees rise up the Joux Plane

With 6km to go to the top of the climb, and 18km to the finish, the yellow jersey group was now 3'45" behind the break. Phelan decided this was too close for comfort and attacked from the break, with Oliphant not far behind.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Phelanattacks.jpg
Phelan attacks toward the top of the Joux Plane

Over the top of the climb, Oliphant managed to open up a lead over Phelan. Could he hold on down the descent?

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Oligoesclear.jpg
Oliphant goes clear over the top of the Joux Plane

With 3km remaining he was 25 seconds clear. And he held on to take another brilliant solo victory ahead of Phelan.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Oliwins.jpg
Oliphant takes Raleigh's 10th win of the season

Oliphant also moved up to 13th overall and finished the day in the KOM jersey, 10 points clear of his nearest challenger Di Gregorio with just one stage remaining.

Stage 4 was far more straightforward. A break of 13 went clear, none of whom were a threat to the KOM competition, so Oliphant could relax safe in the knowledge that he would win the polka dot jersey.

Kaupas (Team Differdange) won the stage from the break, 2 minutes ahead of a reduced peloton.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/St4victor.jpg

Moncoutie held on to the overall. Oliphant gained a further place in the GC, moving up to 12th, and was also crowned King of the Mountain to boot.

The Vuelta has been held annually in the Leon province of Spain since 2001. Previous winners include Egoi Martinez and Wout Poels. The race opens with two flat stages before a challenging stage 3 which includes a stiff uphill finish. Stage 4 is lumpy but should favour the sprinters or a breakaway, while stage 5 includes enough hills to keep people guessing about the GC winner right until the end.

Startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Leonstart.jpg
i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Leonstart2.jpg

With bonus seconds available on the flatter stages, this could suit a rider with a good finish and who can also hold their own on the hills, someone like Bagdonas (An Post) or even Brown (MTN).

Raleigh team

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Leonteam.jpg

The fitness of the team is improving, and Oliphant and Holohan will be hoping they can make their mark in the hills. Briggs is some way off peak fitness but will be our main challenger in the sprints nonetheless.

Transfer announcement #2

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Tennant.jpg

Andrew Tennant

Raleigh have secured the services of Andrew Tennant from Rapha Condor-Sharp. Tennant joins on a two-year contract. The team have lacked a time triallist this season, so Tennant's addition should provide them with a credible challenger in races against the clock.

Tennant should be a great addition to the team Wink

@Ian Butler: I certainly hope so!

Vuelta Ciclista a Leon: Race Report
07.08 - 11.08

The early stages of the race were pretty uneventful from a Raleigh perspective. The first two stages ended in bunch sprints. Radochla (NSP) took stage 1, ahead of Bagdonas (An Post) and Obst (also NSP).

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Leonst1winner.jpg
Radochla wins stage 1

The stage 2 sprint was taken by Ljungblad (Differdange). Bagdonas was second once gain, while Radochla took third to retain yellow.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Ljungblad.jpg
Ljungblad was untouchable on stage 2

The uphill finish on stage 3 really sorted out the boys from the men. A group of just 20 riders slugged it out for the sprint win, with Garcia (Caja Rural) coming out on top. Van Niekerk was second and Bagdonas third, which put the latter into yellow. Oliphant and Holohan just clung on to finish with the same time as Garcia and to move into the top 20 overall.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Garciawins.jpg
Garcia takes the uphill finish in stage 3

Things got a little more interesting for Raleigh on Stage 4. Holmes made it into a break of five riders and did enough in the KOM sprints to make up to second overall in the mountains contest.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Holmesinbreak.jpg
Holmes featured in the break on stage 4

However the break was promptly reeled in, setting things up for Bagdonas to take the stage win and consolidate his overall lead.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Bagwins.jpg
Bagdonas wins stage 4 to extend his overall lead

Hilly stage 5 was undoubtedly Raleigh's finest day in Leon. Holmes once again got into the break to challenge for the KOM competition. He won the first KOM, moving him just two points behind the leader Fernandez.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Holmesinbreakagain.jpg
Holmes takes the first KOM on stage 5

Unfortunately he soon ran out of gas and was unable to challenge on the remaining KOMs, thwarting his attempt at gaining the polka dot jersey.

The break was all swept up at the bottom of the final col. As a reduced bunch hit the top, Oliphant saw his moment and attacked in the driving rain.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Oliattackoverfinalcol.jpg
Oilphant attacks on stage 5

He took a few riders with him, including stage 2 winner Ljungblad. Ljungblad was too strong for the other escapees to take a fine win and steal the overall victory from Bagdonas.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Ljungbladwins.jpg

Oliphant meanwhile clung on for third place ahead of the fast-closing bunch. The bonus seconds meant he moved up to a superb 5th place overall.

The race's tough hill comes too early in the race to be a decisive factor and so the race looked set to favour the sprinters.

Startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Kralovestart2.jpg

The startlist featured a number of fast men likely to challenge for the win. The in-form Bagdonas, so impressive at the recent Vuelta Ciclista a Leon, looked like a strong candidate. Other favourites included Russell Downing, Obst, Kern and Von Hoff.

Our sprint man Briggs is still working his way up to full fitness, but with a sprint finish likely he was nonetheless the protected rider today.

Race report

Holohan made it into the break of the day and set a tough pace up the day's climb.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Holoinescape.jpg
Holohan leads the escape group

As expected however, the sprinters teams reeled the break back in. Raleigh organised an impressive sprint train as the race entered the closing kilometres.

Raleigh's sprint train stretches the field

As the peloton went through the red kite, however, Raleigh's train had been gazumped by a handful of dangerous looking sprinters, including Weissinger, Candelario and Bagdonas. Briggs was in around 8th place.

Weissinger and Candelario lead with less than a kilometre remaining

Bagdonas confirmed that he's in great form at the moment, coming through to take the win ahead of Obst (NSP) and Young (BPC). Briggs held on for 8th, a sign we hope that he's coming back into form ahead of the Tour of Britain next month. Sulzberger was 10th.

Giro della Valle d'Aosta: Preview

This Italian stage race has been held since 1962. The mountain-top finishes on stages 3 and 5, together with the time-trial on stage 6 are likely to provide the decisive moments in the race for yellow.

Startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Aostastart.jpg
i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Aostastart2.jpg

With mountains, hills and a time trial featuring, this race should be one for the all-rounders. Betancur, Garzelli (both Acqua e Sapone), Tiernan-Locke, Camano (both Endura), Sella (Androni), Guldhammer, Schumacher, Rasmussen (Christina Watches) and Van Niekerk (MTN) were the ones we expect to feature in the GC race. Bagdonas will no doubt be a threat on the flatter stages given his form.

Raleigh team

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Aostateam.jpg

Our team should come out of this race in excellent shape for the Tour of Britain. After good performances this month, Oliphant will once again be our GC man, although he probably doesn't have the ability to compete with the very best. We'll also be looking to take our chances in the breaks.

Nice to see Oliphant keep his good form going in Spain Wink

Nice signing in Andy Tennant Wink
