Raleigh is one of the oldest bicycle manufacturing companies in the world. In 1887, the company started out in the humble surroundings of Raleigh Street in Nottingham, England, making just three bicycles a week. Over the years, it expanded to become the biggest bike company in the world, and is probably best known for the iconic Chopper.
The company has also had a long association with cycle sport. Most notable is the TI-Raleigh team of the 1970s and 1980s. In 1980 Joop Zoetemelk won the Tour de France on a Raleigh.
In the mid 1980s the Raleigh team was co-sponsored by Panasonic. The company also supplied bicycles to the French Système U team in the late 1980s where Laurent Fignon lost the 1989 Tour de France to Greg LeMond by 8 seconds.
In 2009 it was announced that they would be founding a new British cycling team called Team Raleigh-GAC with a five-year plan to return to the top of European racing.
Raleigh has bases in the UK, the USA, Canada and Taiwan and has recently been taken over by Dutch cycling firm Accell, so will undoubtedly be hoping for team success to extend its global exposure. Exciting times ahead!

Despite the grand plans of the sponsors, we start 2012 with a limited squad of 12 mainly British-based riders. The team includes some above average sprinters but lacks any mountain or time trial specialists, so it's probably going to have to rely on breakaways and bunch finishes for its success this season.
The team's star rider is undoubtedly stocky sprinter Graham Briggs. Graham has had great success as a top domestic criterium racer in recent years and the team will be hoping he can convert this success as it hits the European road race circuit in 2012.
Other notable riders include the Australian Bernie Sulzberger, formerly of Fly V Australia, and another criterium specialist with a fast finish.
23 year old Liam Holohan and experienced mountain biker Evan Oliphant are the team's strongest riders when it comes to hilly terrain. Liam is a particularly exciting prospect, although the team's small budget means there'll be no staff on hand this season to help him realise his potential.
Meanwhile, the bespectacled Amercian Daniel Holloway and Canadian strongman Jamie Sparling provide the team with some North American interest. They'll no doubt be looking to shine when the team races across the Atlantic.

The sponsors' goals are relatively achievable. Unsurprisingly, their key focus is on races in the UK, USA and Canada.
GAC's sponsorship ends in 2012, so the management team will be hoping the team can do enough to attract a secondary sponsor for 2013 that is able to increase the team's meagre £19,000 a month budget.

The team have a fairly light early season schedule, building up to a more hectic Spring season. Before the team's campaign kicks off in New Zealand however, Bernie Sulzberger will be flying the team colours at the Australian Championships.

Australian Championships: Road Race
Orica - Greenedge's strength in numbers mean that Gerrans and Goss started as the main favourites, with the pundits also backing Evans, Porte and Rogers.
Our man Bernie Sulzberger was considered a rank outsider, unsurprisingly, although we were pleased to see that he was coming into his first race with a good level of fitness.
Bernie decided that riding an aggressive race would be his best approach and went on to the attack early on. After several unsuccessful breakaway attempts he eventually found himself clear with Roe (BMC), Windsor (EDR) and Calabria (TT1). They pulled out a solid lead but Orica-Greenedge had things under control and were slowly bringing the break back.
When four became eight
With 28km to go, however, another four riders bridged across to the break: Haussler (GRS), Renshaw (RAB), Roberts (STB) and Dennis (JAI). This move briefly threatened to swing the momentum in the break's favour. Ultimately, though, it only served to force the peloton to step up the pace. Orica-Greenedge piled men into the chase. Even Cadel Evans put in a few turns of the front.

The catch was made with just 10km to go. Bernie wasn't going to give in that easily though. Despite being tired from his efforts in the breakaway, he put in a brave final dig.
Sulzberger attacks
Gerrans quickly followed, with the Sky duo of Porte and Rogers also in hot pursuit. Gerrans reached Bernie and quickly dropped him. Bernie briefly clung onto the wheels of Porte and Rogers but they soon dropped him too.

As Gerrans went under the 5km to go banner, he had a 16 second lead over the Sky duo, with Sulzberger slipping further back. Meanwhile, further attacks were being fired off the front of the peloton, with Goss, Evans and Meyer all trying to close the gap to Bernie.
Gerrans maintained his advantage to take his first national jersey, whilst Porte and Rogers fought it out for the other podium positions a little further behind. But could Bernie hold on to a famous 4th place?

Goss was closing quickly but, yes, Bernie found enough strength to hold him off and achieve an unexpectedly superb start to his season!

Australian Championships: Time Trial
A long flat TT course was likely to suit the specialists. Porte, Evans and Rogers all showed they were in form at the road race. whilst Meyer and Durbridge were also likely to mount a strong challenge. Sulzberger meanwhile was not anticipating any more heroics after his surprise road race performance!
Cameron Meyer went off early and set a strong time that would prove difficult to beat.

Our man Bernie couldn't get close to Meyer's time and completed the course way down.

But the real race was between Evans and Porte. They both passed the first time check 9 seconds ahead of Meyer. By the time of the third time check they were still neck and neck, a full 25 seconds in front.

Evans crossed the finish line with the best time and then faced a nervous wait to see if Porte could go one better. Who would come out on top?

In the end it was Porte that took the win, edging out Evans by just one second!

New Zealand Cycle Classic
25.01 - 29.01
Team Raleigh's season kicks off with the New Zealand Cycle Classic. The race starts with a prologue followed by four flat stages. Our main aim is to use the race to build fitness, but Briggs will be looking him to test himself in any bunch sprints, whilst the rest of the team will be hunting breakaway successes. Bernie Suzlberger, our hero from the Australian Championships, also features.
 
This is a sprinters race, so the main contenders are likely to be fast men who are also strong prologue riders. Van Rensburg is my personal pick. Other sprinters who will be contenders if they are in form are likely to be Eeckhout, Von Hoff and Downing.
New Zealand Cycle Classic: Stage 1
None of our team are TT specialists so this stage was about limiting our losses. Suzlberger put in a strong ride early on and remained in the top ten for a long while, eventually finishing 9 seconds down in 21st. It was our leader Briggs, however, who put in the quickest time for Raleigh, ending up in 18th and 8 seconds down.

Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg was my pick for the win today. He looked strong on this short, flat 6km route, but couldn't find enough for the win, finishing just 3 seconds down in 5th place. With his sprinting ability I think we could well see a lot more of him as the race goes on.

Hugo Sabido (LA - Antarte) went quickest today though, and will go into Stage 2 with a slender 1 second lead over Filipe Cardoso (Efapel - Glassdrive).

Not that its detrimental to your reports (which are very good btw) but some of your screens are in the wrong place... It's not too bad, but a little confusing. Also, the start lists don't have your team/riders on them. Other than that, very good story. Keep it up |
