love the report

However in the stats/bio it says that his heigh is 6'11? This would make him a contender for tallest ever sportsman

Something's wrong there, because 6'11 is around 205 cm high, not 183. Wink Anyways, great presentation of Justin, nicely written, well done. Grin

I think he probably means 6"1, thats around 183cm.

Loved the presentation

The plan for the upcoming year

Hi all,

I want to start with saying thank you for all the great response on the report of the training camp. I indeed made a small mistake as I'm 6'1, not 6'11. I don't play basketbal you see.

What I haven't told you yet is that the training camp is also used to work out a training plan with every rider for the upcoming year. As it's my second year with the team, the director gave me a chance to lead the team in a couple of races. Most of them are flat as I am more of a sprinter's type then a climber or puncher.

2011 Schedule

My season is divided into three parts.

Part 1:

23/01- 01/02Le Tour de Langkawii1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/MAS.png2.HC
06/02- 11/02Tour of Qatari1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/QAT.png2.1
13/02Emirates Cup - Abu Dhabii1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/QAT.png1.1
15/02- 20/02Tour of Omani1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/OMA.png2.1

I will start my season in Asia with the Tour de Langkawi. A long stage race, 8 flat stages should certainly give me some chances for a good result in the sprints. Next up is the Tour of Qater. 5 pancake-flat stages should again give me some good sprinting oppurtunities and maybe even a chance for a good GC. Following is one of my season goals. The Emirates cup is a classic in the UAE and I want to go for a very good result there. Last is there Oman where I again can sprint a lot but will stand no chance on the Green Mountain.

Part 2:

22/04- 28/04Tour of Japani1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/JAP.png2.1
07/05- 09/05Tour of the Adirondacksi1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/USA.png2.1
15/05- 22/05Amgen Tour of Californiai1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/USA.png2.HC
25/05Oregon Cycle Classici1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/USA.png1.1

After a bit of rest in the month of March, I will race again in April. The Tour of Japan is an exciting race but my form will probably be not great there and the hills should also not suit me. The same can be saind of the Adirondacks so I will use these two races to build up my form for the Amgen Tour of California, Americas biggest race. I hope to get a good result there. I will then race the Oregon Classic after the AtoC but a good result on Mount Hood is not expected.

Part 3:

09/08- 14/08Tour of Utahi1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/USA.png2.1
22/08- 28/08Usa Pro Cycling Challengei1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/USA.png2.1
11/09- 16/09Jayco Herald Sun Touri1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/AUS.png2.1
02/10Tour of the Bayi1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NZL.png1.1
03/10Ruapehu Cycle Classici1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NZL.png1.1
04/10Le Racei1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NZL.png1.1
07/10- 10/10Tour of Northlandi1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NZL.png2.1

After a longer rest period, I return to racing in August. The Tour of Utah is very mountainous and shouldn't suit me. The same can be said of the Cycling Challenge so I will help my teammates there. But the Jayco Sun Tour is almost completely flat so i certainly want a good result there. The last couple of races in New Zealand are also all flat so some good results are also expected there.

I hope you like the races I will participate in. Next report will be from the Australian and New Zealand national championships. See you then.

Nice season-plan! I'm looking forward to those New Zealand-races, if I'm not mistaken, they're all (or mostly) made by roturn, right? Nice to see them in a story.. as well as Tour of the Adirondacks Wink (Too bad, you're not a climber though).. Good luck!

A 2-riders strong Trek-Livestrong team will fight for the Australian Champion's jersey. The hilly route suits neither Lewis nor Parker so their only hope for succes is succesfull breakaway. Top favourites are Evans, Gerrans and Haussler.

The Race

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nc3.jpg

As planned, our riders tried to get into the break but both Lewis, here following an attack started by Roe, and Parker's attempts were unsuccesfull. The pack (Sky and Garmin) didn't want to let any group go in the first part of the race.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nc4.jpg

It took untill halfway that a group finally could create a decent gap. Cooke (Saxo Bank), B. Sulzberger (Fly V), Sutton (Sky), Sutherland (United Healthcare) and Calabria (Team Type 1) have created a big enough gap that Sky and Garmin can't come back. Calabria was dropped over the penultimate ascent. The four sprinted others sprinted for victory and it was Sutton who came out succesfull. Parker was the first rider from our team as 22th in a 3rd group.

Only 21 professional riders start in New Zealand so a strange race is expected. Vink will try to go in the break but we have to see if Pure Black has a rider in it, if not they will certainly chase. Bennett will try to attack on the last hill.

The Race

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nc7.jpg

5 riders were in today's long break. Vink (Trek-Livestrong), Lyttle (Pure Black), Vennell (Bissell), Sergent (Radioshack) and Henderson (Sky). The only team who could chase in the pack, Pure Black had faith in Lyttle so they didn't chase. That's why the escapees advantage at one moment was over 35 minutes! Vink wasn't feeling very strong so the win would be tough.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nc8.jpg

No attacks came out the leading group on the final ascents so the race would be decided in a sprint. Henderson, normally the fastest, had to sprint from the lead so didn't win. Vink was in the 4th position in the wheel of Lyttle but the Pure Black rider couldn't follow Vennell's accelaration. It took a while untill Vink had passed Lyttle so he could only see Vennell celebrating. The 2nd place was still a good result.

Evans, Porte and Rogers will fight for the title of best Australian TT'er. They are all very good timetrialers so the rider with the best form will probably win. Parker will try to finish in the top 10.

The Race

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nctt3.jpg

Parker had no chance for a top 10 today. His form isn't great yet so he can be happy with the 13rd place.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nctt4.jpg

The fight for the win was between Porte and Rogers. The latter had set the best time at the intermediate check but Porte's time there was less then a 2nd slower. Evans never had a chance for the win. Rogers was the first of the two to come in and he rode a very strong time. What followed was very exciting. Porte turned around the roles and bested Rogers time with less then a second to take the win.

The New Zealand ITT championship is very long. The first part is rather hilly so the powers will have to be spread very well. Vink has a good chance for a top 5 and a podium would be great. Beating Sergent will be as good as impossible though.

The Race

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nctt6.jpg

Vink had a very good day and also a good tactic. His plan was to go very hard on the hilly parts and rest a bit on the descents. That payed off and he had the best time on both intermediate checks. He passed the finish line and bettered all earlier times. We were waiting for Bauer, Gudsell and Sergent to come in.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/nctt7.jpg

Neither Gudsell nor Bauer were able to better Vink's time. Sergent, who raced for the Trek-Livestrong team last year, was the only danger left. He crossed the line and we looked to his time. 14" slower as Vink. Great win for Vink!

I am currently updating from my hotel room in Malaysia were tomorrow, the Tour of Langakwi starts. I will start with a race preview.

The Tour of Langkawi is a 10-day long stage race held Malaysia since 1996. The name comes from the region were the first couple of tour's were held but lately, the race has visited other parts of the country aswell. The Tour wass seen as the biggest cycling event in Asia and wass the only one in Asia to have granted the 2.HC status. But the new Tour of Bejing was immediately granted UWT status and is therefore bigger now. Past winners include Horner, Danielson, Charteau and Rujano. Lanfranchi (1999, 2001) is the only rider two win twice here.

The startlist isn't particularly strong. Herrada is probably the big favourite. But guys like Joly, Cabreira and Romero should certainly challenge him if his form isn't great. The sprinters field is certainly stronger with guys like Galdos, Dekkers, Kemps and Candelario.

Eckmann will lead the team for the GC. His form isn't great so we don't have big hopes but maybe a top 10 on one of the two mountain stages should be possible. I am given the role to lead in the sprints. My forrm is also not great yet let's hope it improves. All the other riders are free to go in attacks. If they don't, they will have to help their teammates.

Let's hope le Tour de Langkawi will be an exciting race!

See you tommorow with the report of the first stage.

Welcome again. I woke up very early this morning so that I could update my blog one more time before starting my first race of the season. My form isn't great yet but I'm certainly looking forward to it.

I am really looking forward to racing again. My form isn't great yet but I will try to get a good result in the mass sprint.

The report from the race itself will be made by the official team reporter.

The Race

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/langkawi4.jpg

Around halfway of today's short stage, a break was finally formed. Friedman (Kelly Benefit), Vink, Goesinnen (Drapac), Northey (Pure Black), Freitas (Barbot), Scognamillo (Vorarlberg), Joseph (Topsport) and Ostergaard (Glud) were today's 8 escapees. Some of them are very good riders.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/langkawi5.jpg

That's why Landbouwkrediet (Honig, Dekkers) and Fly V never let their gap grow above 2 minutes. They made sure that everyone was caught before the 10 km banner and assured the stage was going to end in a mass-sprint.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/langkawi6.jpg

Those same two teams made leadout-trains for their sprinters. Honig was leading Honig out and Walker did the same for Kemp. Williams, our hope for a good result, was a bit further in the wheel of Candelario.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/langkawi7.jpg

But he lost a lot of energy fighting for a good place and therefore couldn't compete. He had to let Candelario go with 1.5 km to go and couldn't sprint to a good result today.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/langkawi8.jpg

Kemp was in the lead under the 'flamme rouge' but he had already accelerated out of Walker's wheel. Honig did a better job and Dekkers could wait a bit longer. A lot of other riders like Bonsergent, Hayless and Baugnies were also giving everything on the wide lane.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/langkawi9.jpg

Kemp couldn't keep up and Dekkers never reached full speed so it's Hayless who takes the win. Lima and Candelario could follow him in his wheel and so get the two other podium places. Williams is our first rider as 27th. But worse is that Eckmann has been dropped out of the pack together with Craddock and Parker. Hard for them as it's their first real race as a pro.

Justin's take

It felt good to ride a real race again. But it was also hard to see the others sprinting away from me in the last 2 kms. 27th is still not bad result but better is expected tomorrow. Too bad Eckmann, Parker and Craddock got dropped. I know how they feel, I also got dropped in my first race. Let's hope they fight back tomorrow.

See you then

Justin
