Circulo de Juarez
Five days of pure sprint action from the fast men of the ProContinental Tour. There isn't really much to say about the parcours here in Mexico. With nothing else to worry them, we are expecting the sprint teams to maintain close control over any escapees. The only suggestion of any kind of obstacle is the length of the final stage; perhaps the fourth lap of the criterium might see stamina coming into play.
No previous winners of the overall classification are on the startlist but the big favourite, Caleb EWAN (83), has three stage wins to his name. He sorely needs to make up for his mediocre showing Down Under. It will be the same duo leading him out in Felix GROSS (76) and Achraf EL-DOGHMY (74).
There are several riders who will look to challenge for the favourite for the win. First amongst them must be Sondre Holst ENGER (80), who started the year off by winning the Down Under Classic and has previously taken a stage win here. The only concern is the quality of his leadout train. John JIMENEZ RETANA (77) has a quicker acceleration than his leader and Colby SIMMONS (72) is not a strong pick for the third man.
The same concern also afflicts Danny VAN POPPEL (80), albeit to a lesser extent. Christopher NOPPE (75) is decent as a leadout but Ben TURNER (70), for all he is a well-rounded domestique, might not have the engine you would ordinarily want in a third-man.
The other teams that are expected to build trains have brought stronger lineups. Fabio JAKOBSEN (80) will be safely nestled behind Jay MAJOR (77) and Erik BASKA (76). Jiankun LIU (80) may not benefit from quite as much depth as JAKOBSEN (who has two extra potential leadouts), but he should still get adequate protection from Dylan PAGE (77) and Giorgi TEDIASHVILI (75).
There are 2 more 80-rated sprinters, 7 that are 79-rated and then a further 7 rated at 78. They will probably have to fight for the wheels of the aforementioned sprinters, although their teams might always decide differently. Only time will tell who amongst them will emerge successful from the chaotic soup that is a mass sprint.

IF Girmay and Perera are allowed to form a sprint train for Willems, this could be very interesting. If not, I've wasted even more race days of the former two than I already have so far Either way, Top 10 in the GC has to be the minimum expectation for Willems here.
Tough to look past Ewan here, though DUC has shown he's beatable and his lead-out will be dodgy. Should be a fun few stages. Thanks for the nice preview lief

We’re hoping to hold our own with Kennett, who should be able to manage without a significant train. If needed, Culey and Oka are hopefully up for the cause alongside the others. Really hoping for a good stage 1 as that seems to make all the difference. Certainly wouldn’t mind our riders finding a spot in a breakaway or two - have to believe there’s a few teams more likely than us to jump out in front though!
Thanks for the preview and can’t wait to get racing in Mexico!

A lot of CT teams here, will be interesting to see how that compares to our strategy of not realising you could race HC races (oops). Go PCT teams!

Looking for an encore performance from Enger, but also concerned we don't have the best sprint train for him.

First race for Jakobsen, and the first time we have a super sprint train. Let's wash away the disappointment from Down Under immediately

Relying on Riabushenko to avert a total wipe out in the opening month stage races, That is a scary place to be given the field.
Thanks for the preview.

Einhorn is leading the charge to the line for us here, brought him a good leadout if he needs it, but we know we don't have the riders to chase down the break if he gets the jersey early on.

Think this is an insanely weak field for this race as I clearly didn't realise the HC band doesn't fall for a lot of the teams with sprinter great news for those here
Ewan to me has to win this I struggle to see a world he wouldn't with the huge SP advantage and the leadouts not being great at 77 max. As was said in the pre-season podcast Dylan Page for Liu feels a very strong leadout though plenty of 77 SP leadouts in the lower tier guys
Personally very happy to have DVP here it should be a guranteed top 10 Overall which was unexpected and anything more then that is just a huge bonus! |

Not really hyped for this but, how bad can it really be?
Not sure I should have asked.
Thanks for the preview LW, let's see who's around to sprint in the PCT.
