The second stage will be the occasion for the punchier riders to gain time on the pure time-trialists, who will have the occasion to shine tomorrow. The route is all short and bumpy, and will also be determinant in the mountain classification, with 36 points offered.
The two leaders of this classification, Romele and Soderqvist attack right away. None of them is a competent climber, truly.
They’re indeed quickly caught, and a better competition in Skivild attacks.
It seems like he’ll do this alone. The Carlsberg riders takes the first 5 points of the day solo.
Ahead of the first intermediate sprint, Zana attacked. Philipsen seized the occasion to be brought ahead of the other sprinters, and indeed snatches 4 points.
There were other attacks following this, and we get a break of 5: Zana, Gregoire, Skivild, Jegat and Roman. 116 km to go.
Zana didn’t come here for nothing: he uses Jegat to get 6 points at the cat. 3 sprint. Skivild had a long time alone and he already gives up.
Zana might have thought he’d get the following points also, but there was a counter in the peloton, from Mulubrhan, Romo, Gaudu, Van der Poel and Bax. A dangerous break it is, so MOL and Zalgiris take the lead in the peloton. Specialized have a guy at the front, so they’re not too worried.
It’s Van der Poel who wins the cat. 3 climb.
The peloton riders hard t limit the gap on the easier roads. Not everybody can follow.
The break is over with 65 km left. Guys like Mano, Mullen, Ganna, Morin, Leknessund, Kämna, Haig or Plapp aren’t in the first group. But the pace immediately slows.
Barrenetxea was the next to go for TV glory, but Zana is still here, leading the peloton to deny him mountain points. The Italian gets the virtual polka dots. 47 km to go.
A new break has formed: Bonnamour, Zana, Katrasnik, Hermans, Gautherat, Gregoire and Singh.
Kung leads a peloton of 38. King Power is trying to bring back Ganna. Bagioli and Plapp are among the notable names not in the front group.
Hermans wins the last intermediate sprint. 33 km to go.
The break is caught 500 m after by a Jorgenson led peloton of 43, 1 minute ahead of the other groups.
Nys and Ackermann attack for the cat. 2 points.
The young Belgian crosses first.
Jorgenson attacks 5 km from the line.
He gets a gap with Storer, Bagioli, Trakhov, Aleotti, Oliveira and Herregodts. Evenepoel tries to join.
2 km. The climb is at 5%, it becomes harder after. The 9 have 16 seconds on Firdaus and Dunbar. Krigbaum leads the favorites group of 17.
Flamme rouge. The gap is going down. Ackermann and Sulvaran do the work in the favorites group.
The ramp goes fast in the last hundred meters. It seems that the victory will decide between the 7 leading riders.
Evenepoel gives up. It’ll play between Aleotti and Stannard.
Aleotti takes the win! Very well played by the Italian puncheur. Stannard comes in 2nd.
Jorgenson triggered the winning move. He gets a podium and a good position for tomorrow. He beats Trakhov, Storer and Evenepoel.
Dunbar and Oliveira are some 12 seconds behind.
Wirtgen limits his losses, beating Sulvaran, Würtz, Kmieliauskas, Nys and Eg.
Philipsen comes in 15th. He should lose the yellow jersey. Behind, Bagioli cracked really hard.
It’s a good win by Aleotti, who also takes the GC lead.
Nys gets to wear the polka dots.
Philipsen stays in green. He might have won the jersey today with a smart move.
Nys comes back for the white jersey.
Carlsberg is the best team ahead of the time-trial.
Final day tomorrow already!
