As per usual, the world championships begin by the B Road Race. Hungary, Taiwan and China are the big favorites to join the elite race, but Siric knows how to disturb sprints.
How will the wind here in India affect the race?
The initial break has Yamamoto (Japan), Jungels (Luxembourg), Mullen (Ireland), Malacarme (Brasil) and Jussaume (Canada). 4 men are behind them: Pickrell (Canada), Mano (Thailand), Klahar (Thailand) and local man John (India).
The peloton is pulled by Czechia, China, Malaysia and Hungary.
In the 3rd to last windy sector, the first holes begin to appear in the peloton. No favorite dropped for now, but Mano has been dropped from the break. 65 km to go.
All occupied to fight against the wind and the other favorites, the main teams maybe let too much space to the break: the gap still is at 4 minutes with 20 km left.
Novardianto (Indonesia) tries to shake things up. That triggers and acceleration, and a group of 5 is now chasing. With him are Moricz (Hungary), Ansons (Latvia), Gamper (Austria) and Varga (Hungary).
China doesn’t seem too keen to do the chasing alone behind. Still, they have 3’24 to make up with 17 km left in the race.
They might actually do it! The chasers, who lost Moricz, are 1’17 back with 11 km left. Mullen and Klahar decide it’s time to accelerate.
6,4 km left and there are plenty of possible outcomes! The break will reform, but the chasers aren’t far either.
The peloton is 2’13 behind the leaders, as Antonijevic and Stojnic (Serbia) trigger another attack, followed by Kaisluovo (Finland).
They made it! Not the last three named, but the previous atackers. We know have a group of 12 with 4,7 km left. 7 chasers are 1 minute behind.
2 km. Pickrell gives up, but he fave his country a chance to figure in the elite race. The finale should play between the 11 riders remaining.
On paper, Ansons, Novardianto and Malacarme are the fastest, but who can say after this kind of race?
600 m. Varga and Ansons are ahead, Gamper coming behind.
Ansons flies to give Latvia a place in the elite road race.
He does it! What a race! Varga is just short of the win, what a shame for Hungary.
Novardianto takes 3rd after launching the winning move.
What an upset! Congrats to Larvia!
