The big hills specialists are in Japan for a hard classic around Tsukuba. Lopez is the favorite, but the fast finishers in Vansevenant or Schmid can have a say in that. Hirschi must feel the weight of his team on his shoulders.
They are 16 to try their luck in the early break: Rafferty, Benedetti, Per, Gonov, Skala, Duric, Jenni, Roosen, Bazhkou, Kench, Ndungu, Bereznyak, Tiberi, Jarc, Kusuma and Vinokurov.
They are plenty, but I don’t see any of them to threaten the favorites today.
After reaching 6’10, the gap begins to slowly decrease. Bagnara, Stedman, Oshri, Mendoza, Nuha and Arenas Rodriguez work at the front.
The repetitions of the circuit are harder and harder, so some splits appear. With 80 km left, Müller and Ardila are not well positioned, while Quispe has been dropped for some time now.
In the break, Jarc explodes and is unable to follow the pace.
Fastned and Evonik – ELKO do the work to make the catch with 50 km and three climbs left. No major name missing from the 158 men peloton.
He’s known to be an attacker! Schmid goes at it with 41 km left. The reaction is quite tame behind.
Amezawa leads an attack as soon as the road goes up again. They catch Schmid easily. But all comes back together at the summit under the impulsion of Scaroni.
Vansevenant attacks in the descent. Behind are Lopez, Formolo, Amezawa and Stannard. Ignore the 1 km banner, there are still 33 km left.
Strakhov, Ardila and Narvaez seem to be the biggest victims of these attacks.
He never stops! Vansevenant places another attack in the penultimate climb. Hirschi is behind.
This time it’s Skujins who works to bring them back. Trakhov uses the that to counter.
With 14 km to go, a group of 5 has a small advantage: Hirschi, Amezawa, Vansevenant, Romo and Lopez.
A group of 15 is 20 seconds behind. Kelderman is probably the biggest name not here, and who has not been named before.
Tinkoff Team - La Datcha works hard to make the catch… and Schmid can’t follow. 10,5 km left.
Trakhov is restless! He attacks at the foot of the last climb.
He’s countered by the 5 best men today: Vansevenant, Hirschi, Lopez, Romo and Amezawa. 3,8 km left.
Romo cracks right at the summit, with only 1,5 km to go.
After a short descent, it’s steep again. Vansevenant and Hirschi lead with 400 m left.
What a win for the young Belgian! Hirschi is 2nd.
The World Champion gets 3rd against Amezawa.
Romo comes in 5th.
Trakhov animated the race, but must satisfy with 6th.
Two discreet riders come next in Pidcock (missed by the camera) and Aranburu.
Sosa and Formolo close the top 10, right ahead of Stannard.
Vansevenant gets another great classic after Milan San Remo!
