Strada Appia Antica (PT) - Preview
Welcome to Italia for the Strada Appia Antica! Last year Tinkoff's Sulimov won this race, with the record winner being Sam Bewley (five victories). We except the cobblers to do well again tomorrow, as the profile hasn't changed.
A bit up and down first, but the real racing is done on the two long cobbled sectors in the finale. Let's have a look at the best cobblers here.
| | Fla | Mtn | Sta | Res | Cob | Spr | Acc | Pedersen | Mads | 77 | 65 | 78 | 80 | 83 | 78 | 77 | Spengler | Lukas | 74 | 58 | 74 | 73 | 83 | 62 | 70 | Per | David | 79 | 68 | 74 | 75 | 82 | 74 | 74 | Anderberg | Hampus | 78 | 64 | 77 | 76 | 82 | 60 | 73 | Altur | Marcos | 75 | 63 | 75 | 70 | 82 | 72 | 68 | Van Hooydonck | Nathan | 73 | 63 | 75 | 74 | 82 | 61 | 72 | Senechal | Florian | 75 | 61 | 79 | 74 | 82 | 69 | 74 | Gerts | Floris | 76 | 65 | 75 | 79 | 81 | 71 | 69 | Siric | Ivan | 78 | 63 | 77 | 80 | 80 | 77 | 71 | Gamper | Patrick | 77 | 62 | 77 | 77 | 80 | 64 | 71 | Teunissen | Mike | 75 | 60 | 76 | 72 | 80 | 66 | 68 | Kamyshev | Arman | 75 | 55 | 78 | 72 | 80 | 64 | 57 | Tiller | Rasmus | 74 | 65 | 76 | 75 | 79 | 74 | 73 | Rutsch | Jonas | 77 | 63 | 76 | 75 | 79 | 69 | 68 | Ovsyannikov | Alexandr | 74 | 61 | 75 | 72 | 79 | 79 | 78 | Jacobs | Johan | 76 | 60 | 77 | 76 | 79 | 67 | 68 | Owen | Logan | 73 | 65 | 73 | 71 | 78 | 64 | 71 | Vermeersch | Florian | 78 | 62 | 76 | 77 | 78 | 78 | 77 | Neilands | Krists | 77 | 56 | 74 | 73 | 78 | 71 | 67 | Ferreira | Ricardo | 72 | 56 | 72 | 68 | 78 | 70 | 67 |
Pedersen should be the top favourite, but he hasn't won this race before. Anderberg and Senechal have, so let's see if that gives them wings. Startlist below in spoiler. Good luck to everybody!

Hopefully the uphill sections will tire out some of Gerts' rivals.

It’s always interesting to see what a new game engine does with a route like this. Not ideal for Altur when looking at the route and his skillset, but then again, that goes for a lot of cobblers. He’s not the worst in the hills and most of our domestiques aren’t bad in that aspect either, so who knows. We hope to see him get a top 5, and some good depth.

Pretty much this. Seemed like climbs didnt matter all too much in the past, curious whether that might have changed now. Not expecting too much from my team here but happy to get surprised.

It's cobbles, so we're happy with just a Top 20.
Thanks for the preview Nemo

Wasn’t convinced when sending Anderberg here, but definitely happy all other cobblers are here too. Should increase the chances of having them fight for the win instead of puncheurs with decent cobbles stat.
Difficult to expect a result, but assuming the cobblers fight it out, I hope Anderberg’s energy stats make him a good rider for a top 5. |

Hard to judge really with that profile. Ideally van Hooydonck can continue his recent performances and fight for the top5 or podium.
But the climbs might mix it up a lot and cobbles are only in the final.
Looking forward to the outcome. |

We're just here for the experience. Let's see if we can tease the favorites from a breakaway.

Fun race for Per to end the year. I reckon his mountain should help him in theory a bit. But honestly I'm fine with anything at this point. A win would be great, but as we're out of the relegation fight, even a poor result that pulls down his wage a little wouldn't be terrible.
Thanks for the preview!

We never left!
Fantastic to see Gerts taking what could be his last professional win. He was not very consistent this year, but it's good to see him kind of going out with a bang.
Thanks for the report!

There you go! Great result to take 3rd aswell as a good depth. Also we animated the race with 4 different attackers during the race. That was very nice to see!

Congrats Alex, probably the "right" rider to win this race even when i would not have minded seeing someone else on top
For us this race was about as bad as it could have been. We played no role whatsoever.

Id day Gerts is the perfect winner in this race.
I would not look forward to renewals if I were you Alex

Pretty sure he'll end up with less points overall than last year. And he will decline even more too
The only ones I'm really worried about are Remco and Aniolkowski. But the Pole was already kind of overpaid due to being a FA signing.

Congratulations, Alex! Gerts with the best timing in the end there, very well done! Was really hopeful going into that sprint, as I felt Anderberg had ridden smartly after his early attack, and thought he might have something left for the sprint. Not sure he had, but it also looked like he got kind of blocked, so maybe we'll probably never find out
4th is a solid result for us! And with his win in Arenberg and our good race in Latvia, we've done well in our last one day races |

I'd have been frustrated with this race a few months ago, but as I previewed, I'm feeling pretty comfortable with our ability to avoid relegation now, so we'll just chalk it up to poor daily form for Per and move on. Gerts is a fitting winner and nice to see him snag it as his skills wane.
Thank you for the great report!
