It’s the last day for the climbers. 154 km to make difference in the GC, gain mountain points or a prestigious stage win.
It’s also the last day of suffering for the sprinters and time-trialists, before they can enter the fray.
But what a day it is! It begins right away with the col de Plainpalais, then there’s a long valley between the col de Leschaux and the col des Essenieux, before Thônes and the col de la Colombière. Another valley to Taninges, and as a finish the dreaded col de Joux Plane.
Will Evonik – ELKO be able to control the break, or will we see another maillot jaune tonight? There are plenty of questions before Paris.
The col de Plainpalais (cat. 1, 13,4 km, 6,5%) is a hard appetizer. The attackers are a mix of GC competitotrs, stage hunters and mountain points hunters: Higuita (15th, +14’37; 1st, 157 points), Bagioli, Stüssi (11th, +9’43; 8th, 46 points), Novardianto, Williams (19th, +17’47; 3rd, 109 points), Simmons (9th, 46 points), Chumil, Staune-Mittet.
The 2nd wave of attackers has Potocki, Zmorka, Krigbaum, Krul, Hessmann, Silva, Balmer, Sendeku and Sossa.
With the 64 last points of the race on offer today, only Williams and Egger – who isn’t in the break – can challenge Higuita’s jersey. But there are still plenty of attacks, some must think the group has too much deadweight!
Evonik – ELKO leads the peloton.
Williams beats Higuita at the summit. He still has a very small chance to become the best climber of the race.
The Colombian wins at the flat summit at the col de Leschaux (cat. 3, 7,1 km, 4,3%). Higuita will wear the maillot à pois in Paris. If he finishes the race, that is.
Now there’s 28 km of valley.
Higuita knows why he’s here. He wins gthe col des Essenieux (cat. 3, 5,2 km, 4,5%). The peloton is at 4 minutes with 86 km left.
Right after Thônes come the col de la Colombière (cat. 1, 12,1 km, 5,7%).
Krul and Zmorka don’t even try to hold on. The best climbers in the break work well, and Higuita seals his victory in the best way.
Krigbaum and Novardianto are dropped too. 50 km left.
There’s a big split in the peloton over the summit. There are only 67 men in the yellow jersey group, all of the top 20 being here or at the front.
Higuita doesn’t stop! He takes the col de Châtillon -sur-Cluses (cat. 3, 5 km, 5%).
The peloton is at 8’15 for now, but that doesn’t mean much ahead of Joux-Plane.
Speaking of which, 11 riders begin the final climb together (HC, 11,4 km, 8,4%): Silva, Bagioli, Chumil, Williams, Sossa, Higuita, Stüssi, Simmons, Hessmann, Potocki and Balmer.
The peloton is at 7 minutes. Tinkoff Team - La Datcha works now.
Silva accelerates in the first slopes. The breakaway men can see the peloton downhill.
6,5 km. Eenkhoorn is working in the peloton and the gap is down to 5’13.
Oomen attacks! Primozic tries to get Padun in the slipstream.
A group of 5 leads the race: Silva, Stüssi, Bagioli, Chumil and Sossa.
Primozic rides hard for his leader. Behind, Godoy leads the chase with Haig, Lecuisinier, Skjelmose Jensen and Olivier.
Sivakov tries to close the gap. Leknessund, Geoghegan Hart, Eastman and Chaiyasombat are quite far behind.
Lecuisinier paces hard to close the gap with Padun and Oomen. Haig, Olivier and Skjelmose Jensen try to hang on.
Sivakov and Godoy are one minute behind.
Gazelle is working behind.
1 km left for Stüssi and his companions. Lecuisinier, Padun and Haig joined Higuita and Williams at 47 seconds. Oomen and Olivier seem cooked, while Sivakov and Leknessund are coming strong, Skjelmose Jensen cracked quite hard.
500 m for Stüssi and Bagioli who try to resist to the favorites coming behind!
Bagioli wins at the top of Joux-Plane! Stüssi gave all he could but must settle for 2nd.
Silva, Chumil ad Sossa also hold on the favorites.
Padun just beat Lecuisinier, at +0’49.
Haig and Higiuita are at +1’06.
Williams is 10th.
Sivakov loses 2’29 along Leknessund, Godoy and Olivier.
Geoghegan Hart takes some time on Kirsch and Skjelmose Jensen.
Eastman and Phinney lose 4’30.
Stüssi enters the top 10 and Haig is very close to the top 5. He could even get a podium with a good TT tomorrow. That stage could mix things in the top 10, but Lecuisinier should have his jersey sealed.
Paris tomorrow! Two stages to go.
