195 km from Bileca (Bosnia-Herzegovina) to Dubrovnik, from the lake to the see, and a lot of short, steep climbs. Is it puncheurs paradise yet? The organizers think they’ll perform better than the hybrids. It could be the occasion for Lopez to take the GC lead, if he can find his legs. With 70 mountain points to take, today is also important in that competition.
Seibeb gets a bit of advance, taking 2nd the in the first cat. 4 climb, 5 km after the start. He’s right after Blouwe, who hadn’t any points.
Also attacking are Page, Pira, Klahan, Pringle (13 points), Schinnagel, Henao, Finkler, McKenna, Amari, Carapaz, O'Brien and Knox.
Aker – MOT are already organized to chase, but this break of 14 seems validated.
Finkler, Blouwe and Henao is the order at the next cat. 4 climb. The gap is down to 6’44 after a maximum around 8 minutes. DK Zalgiris has joined the change.
The next set of climb will be done two times. It’s a cat. 2 (4,5 km, 8,1%), and two cat. 4 in a quick succession, without much of a descent in between.
The big winner of the first triad is Knox (11 points). Seibeb gets 8. The points are quite spread out, which is good news for the Namibian.
Ivanovas has been dropped from the peloton.
Seibeb works hard for his jersey, and he wins another cat. 4 against Knox and Pira. The Tryg rider has 57 paints against 16 for the Brit.
90 km left, the gap to the peloton is 3’40.
The 2nd set of hard climbs favors Schinnagel (15 points) and Knox (10 points). Seibeb still has a solid lead.
It also thins out the break, where Amari, Klahan and Pringle can’t follow the pace anymore. It’s not clear whether O'Brien and Page will make it back.
Behind, the peloton is bleeding and very stretched.
O'Brien and Page don’t make it back.
Pira gets the last cat. 4 climb.
33 km to go, the gap is 6’30, which makes Schinnagel the virtual GC leader.
The gap is down to 3’57 as the break begins the finish (cat. 2, 8,5 km at 4,3%). Pira immediately attacks. Seibeb and McKenna can’t follow anymore.
It was a bluff from Pira, as Carapaz’ acceleration drops him. 4,4 km left, the peloton is coming in the back.
In said peloton, a group of 25 detached. The notable absents are De Bie, Sosa (and most of his teammates), Schmid, Min or Madouas, but the gap is still small.
The break begins the last, steep 1,5 km with 3’40 on the faves. If the times stay like this, Schinnagel would still be yellow jersey.
He detaches with Knox and Henao under the kyte.
Nobody has the strength to pass him, so Schinnagel wins the stage. Clock in hand now, to see where he’ll finish in the GC…
The favorites are at the foot of the climb.
Knox is 2nd and takes valuable mountain points, against Henao.
Blouwe beats Carapaz, Pira, Finkler, McKenna and Seibeb.
Everybody goes fast, but there’s no real attack yet for the favorites, who are in the last 700 m.
Mohoric has the upper hand with 300 m left. Lopez is boxed in behind Valter.
Hirschi pips Mohoric on the line, 3’26 after Schinnagel crossed it.
It’s a nice win for the breakaway specialist. He also takes yellow with an advantage of 47 seconds at mid race.
Sossa is the new best of the youngsters.
Lotto now replaces Indosat as best team. For now: still 3 hard stages to come.
